It's funny you mention that. I haven't been able to complete the "spin out 4 opponents" requirement yet because I keep getting disqualified for cutting the track while trying to spin them out. This game just doesn't know what it wants to be.webdanzer wrote:mixdj1 wrote:Now I know what the game actually is ... an Xbox Live public room trainer. To be fair, they DO penalize you for cutting corners. A Live trainer would have that as a goal as well:

Well, I just spent the last hour stuck at Spa trying to spin out four opponents and couldn't do it. I can spin one, maybe two, but then I'm so far back I can't catch up with the rest of the pack to spin out any more. WTF, I thought this was a racing game, not road rage in Burnout.
I realize I can just go on to the next track but why in the hell would you make that a requirement to get all of the stars for a race?!? I was really enjoying it up to that point but after wasting an hour on that crap I don't even want to play it anymore.

I've never done any of that crap intentionally; I just race. s*** happens. Then I go on. I've opened up Tier 2 without resorting to figuring out what they want you to do besides just win. I wouldn't want to play it anymore either, if I'd done what you're doing, Mix. But I know that, and I ain't gonna do it. Hell, as long as I open up everything, I don't care if I've got every star in the game, but that's just me.mixdj1 wrote:Well, I just spent the last hour stuck at Spa trying to spin out four opponents and couldn't do it. After reading through this thread the following wouldn't surprise me -
"I spun an opponent our in a counter clockwise motion and then found an UZI on the floor. I began shooting everything and everyone I saw before being passed on the last lap.. I took second place and in my fit of rage I shot the guy who was standing on the podium..."
Sim? Arcade? Shooter?

Like Teal, I am just having fun racing without worrying about anything else. I got to tier 3 the first night of playing without much problem using that philosophy, so some of the side stuff is not necessary, but it's there for people who like it. In fact, while the points system is neat and fun to an extent, I do not pay much attention to it after each race most of the time.
I loved Forza 2 and played it to death. I also thought RacePro was good as well. Shift may not be quite the sim experience of either of those games (although Forza 2 is not as realistic as some people like to think), but what it does do is give a sense of excitement to the races that RacePro and Forza 2 do not give. And it gives that excitement without being as dumbed down as Grid or PGR. That is why I appreciate Shift so much. It is able to give a more realistic driving model than the arcade style games, while at the same time providing some of the elements that make arcade racers exciting. People can apply whatever labels they want to Shift, but the main thing is that it's a really fun game for people like me and others who want a fast and exciting game without being insulted with an overly simplistic driving model.

Have you tried this yet, Don? Thought I'd have a bash at answering your earlier question.
Not that you, I or anyone else really gives a dry-roasted Mediterranean toss about that, of course, but it's the sort of thing they'd surely have paid more attention to had it really been intended for 'our hardcore sim fans.' The NFS: Shift I'm playing is a halfway house of a game to me, in the same way GRID was but more irritatingly so, because it gets more things right. The in-car camera really makes you feel like you're strapped into a flying machine once the speed builds up, the AI race both you and each other in a very convincing way (covering their lines, actively looking to pass, making their own mistakes independently of any shoves you might give them), and it sounds excellent too.
The chief problems I'm having are the handling and some of the other AI behaviour. Those curious slides that Naples described earlier are how the game wants you to corner at all times, and they just feel a bit off to me. It's not a Burnout or Ridge Racer drift, it's not a Forza death-dealing kind of slide, and it doesn't compare to anything I've felt in a game or a car. I wonder if that's what people meant when they referred to twitchy controls - the controls are alright both out of the box and with Terry's settings from earlier, but every time you approach anything tighter than a kink, you're going to start that slide the instant you turn in, whether you like it or not. It doesn't help me that I have the same feeling of slight detachment that GRID gave me, this sense that when I angle the stick towards a piece of track, sometimes the best I can hope for is to go in the general direction I wanted and see where that leaves me.
It really doesn't help me that the AI do the kamikaze drive-into-the-side-of-me thing that I do to them to score points, because the hard AI are too fast to give you a chance of finishing at the front in the short races you're given. [Edit for clarity: that is, too fast for you to catch them up once they've spun you off. If you can make it through a race without that, the hard AI is quick enough that you can't afford to make a mistake, but not unbeatable.] That part of things doesn't feel very well balanced, which is leading to a lot of restarting, an amount of controller throwing and enough frustration that I'm probably going to give up soon. I see completely why people like this game so much - I have the odd race where I love it too. I have too many, though, that annoy the life out of me...
No, it's not true. I'm on Pro handling and Hard AI, and you can't feel any of the things Ian Bell says the physics engine features. The engine may well be capable of producing it, but it surely isn't doing so here. If the dev team were really catering for the hardcore race sim fans, they'd have used a version of Spa that hadn't become obsolete 3 years back, wouldn't they?DChaps wrote:So, would you say that this quote from SMS's Ian Bell is not true, or have you all yet to try this Pro mode that is mentioned below.
“SHIFT is built on the most advanced physics engine we’ve made, and is by far the most advanced and realistic physics engine of any of the mainstream racing games. We’re talking about an engine that can run unlimited threads, detailed physics parameters running at around 400 Hz on consoles. Things like tire deformation based on g-forces, tire pressures, rubber thickness, which only the most diehard sim fans will notice, but we know it’s there.
We have a full realism hardcore mode called Pro that you can choose to race in from the start that will feel natural and comfortable as well as raising the bar for handling compared to anything out there (or due out soon) for all of our hardcore race sim fans.”

I tried the PC demo last night and I immediately noticed the out of date Spa (especially last chicane) that Adam was referring too. My PC can't handle this game although it still looks quite good at the low-mid settings. Handling is a bit twitchy for me and that's partly do to unstable framerate more than anything else.
I'll have to go with the 360 version instead.

I picked it up today and put in 2-3 hours. You pretty much summed it up so far for me in these two sentences.
I am going to try Terry's control settings and his advice. Play it some more and see if I can give it my love
EDIT: After messing around with everything and still being a bit frustrated with the control I decided to see what the game was like on the easier settings so I put it on normal. Unreal...I might be nuts but it appears that the f***in game starts the brakes for you if you are late with them....This is normal? I have never seen anything like that before. To think that there is actually an easier setting than that on the game called casual?. I havent tried that one yet but I can only assume it drives the car the entire time for you.
Im going to save this game for when Im in my 80's.
Im almost ready to say this is great then something happens and Im pissed off at what I perceive to be the f***ed control...so...GB_Simo wrote: I see completely why people like this game so much - I have the odd race where I love it too. I have too many, though, that annoy the life out of me...

I've had a good ebay bidding streak lately. I won a bid for a sealed 360 copy of NHL 2K10 for $30 which includes 2 day UPS shipping. No such luck with Dirt 2 though.macsomjrr wrote:Wow that is cheap!Rodster wrote:I just snagged a new copy (360) on ebay for $48 total.
...and I'm not talking about the game.
Fellas, if you want sublime control of the cars try the following two things. I was having trouble controlling some of the cars in tier 4 so I went on EA's forums to see if I could find some tips. I came across this, and let me tell you it changes the game A LOT! The control is so much better using these settings. These are based around the controller, so I do not know if they also work for the wheel. Check them out and let me know what you think. I have been shaving massive times off my laps with these settings. I love this game more than ever now that I am using the settings.
Change your steering settings to the following:
Steering Dead Zone 15%
Accel Dead Zone 10%
Brake Dead Zone 10%
Steering sensitivity 5%
Acell Sensitivity 5%
Brake sensitivity 5%
Speed steering Sensitivity 100%
then...
At the main menu enter CAR GARAGE----> TUNING, press 'Y' to enter quick tuning mode.
Under the heading 'balance' move the slider all the way to OVERSTEER. That's right oversteer. Apparently the developer labeled this slider wrong or its a glitch. Turning the slider to oversteer will actually add understeer.

Oh, and one thing I forgot to add to my previous post -- you may want to make some minor adjustments to these settings depending on the car, your driving style, and track. On some of the tracks with crazy corners I have made slight adjustments, for example. These settings serve as a good overall base though.
Thanks for that, toon. The deeper I dig into this game, the more I like it. I like the car battles the most, I think. And the faster the cars I open, the more stupid-crazy the cockpit view gets (in a good, good way). I haven't played DiRT 2 in days...I want to, but this just keeps sucking me back in!
