In a strange game( you had to be there) the Redskins defeated the visiting Rams 21-18. I started to do a complete recap/write up but I think Zep can do a much better job so I will leave that to him :P .

The game was typical of the rivalry as it came down to the very last minute . Great game and in the final analysis the better player did win.

Jeez, XXXIV! Boxing and football? Did Zeppo come over to your house, kick your dog, leave a steamer in the can and drink your milk right from the carton, too? :)

You too, Wayne. Was a very different one. Most of the time I felt so comfortable hanging out hitting whoever I wanted, and building a 27-3 lead.

Then, next thing I know, you're knowing EXACTLY where I want to go, I'm throwing back to back picks, and it's 27-20.

That was some very good defensive adjusting, and not very smart on my part, but good game. It's just so weird to bounce around from team to team--in one franchise I'm leading the league in rushing, in another I'm 3rd or 4th. Then in this one, I can't run AT ALL, so I don't even try. Short passes are my runs, but that can backfire (like it did last night).

Good game, but I think mics should be mandatory for DSP league games :(

 ...Between him and Terry the last few nights I dont think Im ever going to win a game of anything ever again. I think Im going to have to find some blind gamers to play.
No offense to blind gamers as, at this point, I might be boasting a bit.

Nozzleman this is a holiday weekend so I'd really like to set up a time if you can't play nights at all ever.

Saturday afternoon like 3 or 4pm CT work for you?

Giants lose a heartbreaker, 20-17, in Dallas' home opener.

In a battle that took two tries due to a disconnect, the Giants and Cowboys played 7 quarters of markedly different football with eerily similar results.

In both matches, the Boys led by 14 at the half before a determined 3rd quarter allowed the Giants to close the gap. The first game however, saw a dominant Giants' defense miffed at two Eli pick-six's. In the second game, they gave up more yards on the first drive than they did in three quarters of Game 1. Eli, on the other hand, showed reasonable ball control in racking up TOP, but having only a 30 yard field goal by newly acquired Stover to show for it.

Other signees Edgerrin James and Mike McKenzie contributed a TD and a key INT, respectively. The pick by Dread with a tie game and seconds to go in third would be squandered however.

While facing 2nd and 5 on a short field after a short run by Jacobs, whose strong running had been key in allowing the Giants to tie the game on two third quarter drives, Eli inexplicably audibled to a quick slant and his eyes drifted to space that would soon be occupied by Demarcus Ware. Despite all scouting that cautioned Manning of the dangers of tossing in this direction, the Giants quarterback gifted possession back to the Cowboys by handing Ware the pick.

Some strong ball control ending in a Folk FG and a big stop by the Dallas defense would wrest the game out of the Giants grasp.

Great game(s) Gamer. In the first half of each, you had me on my heels and your D gave me fits. My "bend, don't break" defense from the first game abandoned me in a hurry and I was playing come from behind all morning. Still, with a tie and the ball, I thought I might eke out the game. Way to hang tough and put together the winning drive early in the fourth and stuff me on my last possession.

Hope I get to return the favor in NY

G7, great game(s) and great write up. Yeah I was really feeling good about my D and myself at the half of both games, only to be brought back down to earth by ball control offense in the second half. That second game, I wanted to come out more aggressive in my passing game and mix in Barber, Jones and Choice. Jones surprised me with that 52 yard scamper in the first quarter. In the second half I couldn't do anything to stop your running game and just when I thought I'd knock Manning on his ass, you'd get rid of the ball for a completion. I was starting to get very frustrated in that 3rd quarter. Great game. Very enjoyable.

That was very nice. Had me bitching until at least three plays later.

Here's the Felix Jones 52 yard run:

That Jones run is exactly what I'm talking about in the other thread. Sorry, but nobody is breaking out of that tackle in the NFL.

Yep. It doesn't bug me so much when it's Brandon Jacobs, but...Felix Jones?

I don't see those very often (I usually sit back with a safety and wait to see the "busting out" animation and then lay a hit stick on him), but when they happen, they're irritating. But then again, it lends the feeling of "never being over til the whistle blows" to every run.

What irritates me more is the plays that are blown dead with the guy still on his feet, falling for yardage--and the horrible forward progress calculations.

I think the forward progress calculations are what lead to the piss poor out of bounds calls. Seems the clock won't stop unless I am running out of bounds and am still on my feet. It I am tackled near the sideline and it is CLEAR I went out the damn clock keeps running. That bugs the hell out of me LOL

Those happen to me so rarely I don't get what causes it to happen to some backs. I love how #58 just kind of lets him go. Hopefully they can build on this pro-tak and tweak it more as it has some good potential.

They really need to work on the blocking, it has to be a priority and I wonder if it is even fixable as they know it's a priority and it never seems to get addressed.

I've stayed out of the discussion as it happened against me, but I was so tempted to post this, too :D

Pierce alone probably makes that tackle not to mention that the safety caught him pretty square and gets help from the corner pretty quickly.

But it's Pierce's "where did he go" reaction that's priceless

Seriously though, I'm sure I'll be the beneficiary of this as often as not so I won't sweat it too much.

On the other hand, I nearly needed to factor the cost of a new controller into the price of Madden 10

For some reason this play didn't bother me too much. (edit: forgot to add the smiley)

I did used to have the cpu do this to me quite often, I just started using X button to wrap up more, and stopped using the hit stick and stopped trying to strip the ball.

Not trying to justify the play and Felix isn't a big power runner by any stretch, but I do use the RB shoulder button to protect from fumbling and to put the runner's head down to plow through, potential strips and hit sticks. I'm also constantly using the right stick to keep moving forward. In this particular play it looks like this worked against the safety and the cb, and I think Pierce is trying to strip. If you watch the play, none of the 3 defenders are using good tackling.

Actually I guess I am trying to justify the play. :D

Here is the thing I don't use either, I just run the guys into someone and they seldom seem to miss the tackle as much. It also seems like you have a better chance of tacking on if you just run into the pile instead of hitting a button.

I still hit stick or x when I need to but 90% of my tackles are just from running into them and when I do hit X I hold that sucker down until he is on the ground. Maybe it is just a placebo effect but to me it seems to make the difference.

That's exactly what I do, and it has helped me tremendously. There were a few plays during my game against G7 where I had a DB (Scandrick, Jenkins and Sensabaugh, I believe) take down Jacobs one on one because of this. I was really nervous because they were open field and I felt he should have got away from me.

Sorry Jared, I posted in the sign up thread that I would be using my Cowboys59 account. I pretty much turned my Badgun 360 over to my kids.

I could play tonight so if you see me online send me an invite. I have to work Saturday but could play Saturday night. Just let me know what works best for you.

Thanks

Mark, any chance we can play tonight?

I highly recommend you try to play tonight and not wait until tomorrow - Mr. Guinness and I are have a little get together right now.

After week 1 is mmeh97/eman the odds on favorite to win it all? The Eagles crushed the very solid computer-led Carolina Panthers 26-7. I'm just sayin....

Well, the highly anticipated game between me and XXXIV, hated rivals that we are, was indeed a crazy affair with six total turnovers, two on one key play.

The Rams took the ball to start the game, drove down the field, and scored a field goal, 3-0 Rams. Then the Redskins took the ball, moved it well, scored a TD, 7-3 Redskins. The scoring play was this 18 yard TD pass from Campbell to Cooley where he seems to have just barely poked the ball over the line before going out of bounds:

<embed src="http://cdn.www.easports.com/static/110. ... player.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="640" height="360" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="height=360&width=640&file=http://cdn.content.easports.com/media2/ ... ="></embed>

Then the defenses settled in for a little, until the Rams score to retake the lead, 10-7. As the 2nd quarter wound down the Redskins started making headway. The home team found themselves in the red area with about a minute remaining, and that's when 'the play' happened.

For no good reason, the replay of this one wouldn't take; it would just cut out about 20% into the play no matter what angle. But of course, I could watch it in replay mode all the way through. Frustrating.

Anyway, Campbell tries to loft ball into the corner of the endzone to Moss, but he tries to do it against an apparent cover-3. So of course, it's picked off (Campbell ended with three INTs, a disturbing trend), and the interceptor takes the ball up field and beyond the 20. There he is met and stripped of the ball by of all people QB Campbell, making amends for the poor throw that accompanied the poor decision, and the ball is landed on by Santana Moss. So the Campbell to Moss connection did become compete by the time the whistle blew.

With a fresh first down, Campbell steps back on the very next play, and pulls off this magic trick:

<embed src="http://cdn.www.easports.com/static/110. ... player.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="640" height="360" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="height=360&width=640&file=http://cdn.content.easports.com/media2/ ... ="></embed>

On super-slow mo, you can see that the only reason the ball doesn't hit Portis in the face is because he tips it with his hands just enough for it to miss his melon. And that Laurinaitis fellow has got some serious cat-like reflexes to be able to handle that thing from so close. But handle it he did, and so the half ended with the Rams ahead by three, 10-7.

Well, the Redskins took the 2nd half kick off and marched down, eating up clock, and retook the lead thanks to this "RobVarak Special" by 280lbs Mike Sellers for 21 yards:

<embed src="http://cdn.www.easports.com/static/110. ... player.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="640" height="360" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="height=360&width=640&file=http://cdn.content.easports.com/media2/ ... ="></embed>

To be fair, the guy is 280lbs, but still, that was a clear case of the Madden10 style.

On the next possession, Bulger tested how well Brian Orakpo's transition to LB and pass coverage responsibilities was progressing. He got a direct answer:

<embed src="http://cdn.www.easports.com/static/110. ... player.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="640" height="360" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="height=360&width=640&file=http://cdn.content.easports.com/media2/ ... ="></embed>

Though the big rookie from Texas didn't score, he did get it close enough so that Campbell could run it in from 4 yards to extend the Redskins lead to 21-10.

At this stage, late in the third quarter, one could feel the deflation of self-fulfilling prophecy begin to seep out of the Rams sidelines. But the Redskins stopped being able to move the ball from that time forward, and after Jackson pounded into the endzone on a play I didn't bother to save, and after the 2-point conversion was successful, and especially after the Rams got the ball back with just under two minutes to go, everyone in the place realized that this game was going to end like they almost always do between me and XXXIV: going down to the wire.

So there we were, Bulger heroically leading his men towards that game-tying field goal, and the Readskins defense trying to figure out why they couldn't do anything to stop them, when new Rams WR Ike Hilliard became involved, trying to Walter Payton for 'just that one more, one more yard' through FS Laron Landry:

<embed src="http://cdn.www.easports.com/static/110. ... player.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="640" height="360" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="height=360&width=640&file=http://cdn.content.easports.com/media2/ ... ="></embed>

SS Chris Horton actually hit him first, and was bulldozed over. But Landry got that strip in (I don't think I was hitting that button), and Horton was able to scoop up the ball. With under a minute remaining, and the Rams left with one timeout, the ball game was over and the Redskins had escaped with a 21-18 victory. The play was so nice, I uploaded it twice. I know XXXIV appreciates football action like this:

<embed src="http://cdn.www.easports.com/static/110. ... player.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="640" height="360" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="height=360&width=640&file=http://cdn.content.easports.com/media2/ ... ="></embed>

Absolutely crazy, yet fitting, way to end this game. The Skins get lucky, bailed out by their D thanks to two key take-aways. The Skins O, despite one take-away of their own in the turnover department, just lost their way after the first drive of the second half, and Campbell gave up three INTs on far too many throws (16-27, 1TD, 3INT). Portis only ran six times for 25yds, and I was going in thinking 'I have to run the ball a lot.' Jackson, meanwhile, carried only 11 times for 47yds while Bulger was very efficient with 15-22 for 235, 1 TD, 1INT.

The Redskins improve to 1-1, while the Rams are also 1-1. Washington goes to Detroit to face the CPU Lions, while St. Louis take their 'Old LA Uniform Nostalgia Tour' (hey, isn't that Warren Beatty?) back home to the dome to host the as-yet rudderless Packers.
