Mr Adu comes to the Swamp
Just thought I'd remind everyone:
4pm Satruday on ESPN2, the MetroStars have their home opener, hosting D.C. United and young Freddy's first visit to the stadium Pele called home.
Those who can, should make it to the game, but get there early. They will sell a ticket to anyone who wants in, as long as there are not more than 79,000 people. They are talking numbers in the low 30,000 range (as of Tuesday they had sold over 23,000, and they mention how the Lothar Mattheus debut drew 7,500 walk-ups). The atmosphere will be superb. The day will be beautiful and sunny, and not too hot. The box office will be a disaster and pure chaos. Parking will be insane, since the Knicks play the Nets at 4:30 (thanks NBA Playoffs! Nice timing!). Freddy Adu may play some in the game.
Come one come all!! And those who can't come, tune in the TiVo to ESPN2 4pm EDT Saturday 4/17. Maybe we'll get to see Adu's first professional booking!!!

My DVR already is set.
In fact, this is a pivotal game for me. Between watching both teams and doing some Web research, my choice of MLS teams to support has come down to D.C. United and MetroStars.
Pros and cons for both teams, with Saturday's game possibly ending the deadlock.
Looking forward to it!
Take care,
PK

Ok, can't blame you there, I guess.

Freddy was on Mike and Mad Dog in NY yesterday afternoon. Came off like a great kid. No ego or false air at all. Really the type of interview that makes you think that he can be a great ambassador for the sport. I don't even follow soccer, and I enjoyed hearing him talk, and I might start following him. Getting non-fans interested in probably the best compliment to any player. And he did that, so I'll be rooting for him.

Eddie Gaven is a stud!! Look, I love Earnie and I think Convey is awesome and Eskandarian is becoming good, but Ediie Gaven is a stud! And he's only 17!! And we have Eddie Pope! And the crazy-like-a-bird-man Jonny Walker (and if you get the MLS package, you can watch JP DellaCamera say "Johnny Walker reminds you to drink responsibly. Save by Jonny Walker!!").
And, the best thing, is we're not D.C!!!!!!! We haven't won S**T!!! WE HAVE NO HARDWARE, NOT A THING!!! Last year we hosted the US Open Cup Final, our first final in any competition, and we lost!
So if you join us now, you can be with us when we finally get some TROPHIES.
Plus, Eddie Gaven is a stud, and will become a hero in US Soccer (God willing). He and Adu play great together (and Szetela, and Johnson, durn all these young amazing kids) on the youth Nat's.
Oh, and don't forget Bob Bradley, who is a superb coach. I like Nowak alot, I love that a true European superstar-level guy is sticking with MLS (he could probably coach any team in Poland), but Bob Bradley is pretty good when it comes to coaching, you'll see.
Don't judge the fans by the idiots they show on TV either. There're Metros fans of every color and creed, every native language.
OK I'll shut up now.
NoJoke: Glad to hear your interest has been piqued by young Mr. Adu. He really is remarkably mature, and the expectations for him within the soccer universe are ridiculous, so it's even more impressive how he has handled it so far. Anyway, it's great that he may get you to watch on Saturday, it's great to hear that kind of thing! And perhaps you may start to pay a little attention to MLS, which is slowly becoming a very good and competitive league. Still, it's SO much better when your there, so come on out and see a game sometime this summer.

Warning... spoilers ahead for you Tivo junkies!
Awesome game today. This was my first live soccer match ever, and what a game to start off with! First half was a nightmare, watching D.C. make swiss cheese of the Metros defense. It seemed like D.C. could do as they pleased on the left wing, especially against Zaidie. It easily could have been 2-0, even 3-0 going into the half. Lucky they only got that one goal.
Then in comes my new hero Fabian Taylor... changed the whole game! Two goals, great stuff... plus the diving header by Wolyniec, who spent the next three minutes on the ground. Amazing how a guy can look like he separated his shoulder one second and then be totally fine and back on the pitch a minute later. Is it just me, or is there a lot of that in soccer? Not that these guys are whiners (we'll leave that for the NBA), but I constantly see guys just writhing in pain, and then two minutes later it's like nothing ever happened. Do soccer players just suck it up?
Also great to see Adu's first MLS goal, although it was sort of a strange one... no one around me could really tell who had scored in all the mess, until Adu came trotting back to midfield, congratulated by one of his teammates. Hardly the fanfare one would expect for the kid's first goal. Maybe they knew time was running down, and they didn't want to dawdle, but hell, one pat on the back for Freddy's first goal? Are they bitter about the money and attention or something?
Anyone see that sick little spin move he did on the left wing, late in the game? Craziness.
F*cking great game, and what a great sport to see live. I was only seven rows from the field too, and I didn't even have to break the bank to do it. Even had a beer with Zeppo in the parking lot before the game. Will definitely be making a few return trips to the stadium this summer.

Metrobastards.
Wonderful officiating yet again (albeit even for both sides) and merry christmas with the no call on that second goal.
Bradley is a total ass that is the death of attractive football in the league. Say all you will about him, but where is the hardware?
Hats off to the DC supporters that made the trip up - it looked every bit like a DC home match from the view on ESPN.
I gotta hand it to Taylor. This guy is the real deal. You looked like shite until he took the pitch and transformed the whole match in a matter of minutes. How in the hell did the league allow the scum to stock up on that many quality forwards? Must be that old "gotta be a winner in NY for the league to succeed" mentality.
Unfortunately Freddy looks more and more overhyped all the time, and seems at least a season away from being comfortable out there on a regular basis.
F'ing Earnie Stewart. Has done absolutely nothing for us in more than a year with the club and that misplay on the carpet really cost us. He can't finish his way out of a paper bag.
And finally, for those of you still shopping for a club to support, how can you choose one that plays on that absolutely dreadful surface? Might as well support an indoor soccer side.
Yes I'm bitter, dammit, but take comfort in the fact that I still think we have the better side. You took one, but the next three are ours...

They did have a good showing, but make no mistake, the ESC was much louder. I think they must have had the microphones near section 101 turned down, since every other chant was laced with obscenities.Blublub wrote: Hats off to the DC supporters that made the trip up - it looked every bit like a DC home match from the view on ESPN.

What exactly are you smoking? Unattractive soccer? How's 6 goals in 2 games? Pretty attractive from where I'm sitting. Let's see, D.C. has 5 goals in 3 games, Metros have 6 goals in 2 games. Which do you find more attractive? And how attractive is coming from behind to win 2 games in a row?
Bradley's hardware is in Chicago, where he earned it with an expansion team in it's very first season, and if I remember correctly they won the double that year as well.
As to the Metros getting all the "quality forwards," Taylor is barely 20 years old. The entire league bent over backwards so D.C. could have Freddy, and let's not even get into the sandbagging Moreno who screwed us out of one senior international slot, one top-level MLS salary, to sit in the luxury box all last year, only to return "home" a year later and produce more goals in 2 games than he did all last season. How's the back feeling Jaime?
Just wait till the latest Colombian League striker comes to the Metros (the 30yr. old Argentine, Sergio Galvan Rey) he should be pretty good but I worry he may not settle into MLS very well; we'll see.
And as to it feeling like a D.C. home match, my goodness. Apparently RFK can't fit as many people as showed up yesterday, so it couldn't have been a D.C. home match, could it? There sure were a lot of lost looking people who were searching for the beltway to get home, or other D.C. bandwagoners from CT and NJ (half the D.C. supporters I talked to were from well north of the Mason Dixon line), and I admit they made some noise on the 1st half goal, but they shut up pretty quick in the second half, and the "Screaming Fascists Icons," er, uhm "Eagles," couldn't handle the "you're not singing over there" razzing after the 3rd mintue.
It was awesome to hear MetroStars yelled in joy in an entirely new language, namely Carribean English.
"MaitraStaars!! Yaa mon!!!" They were going NUTS when Taylor scored that 2nd goal. Great to add more complexity to the tapestry of Metros support.
BTW D.C. fans, how's the weather back home in El Slavador?
And PK, here's a great reason to love the Metros that I failed to mention (to my shame): John Wolyniec. This guy gets zero respect, no one thinks he can play (except Bradley and those of us who trust him), but all he does is work his ass off, do his job, never complain, get beat up, and score big goals. Awesome blue collar type of player.
Freddy was cute, but it's clear he is not ready for this level. He needs minutes, though, to get there, and I think he may by the end of the year, have a big impact. It was cool to see his very first pro goal, but even the Salvadorans, I mean D.C. fans, were laughing at the kid and didn't know he had scored until it was announced. I was happy for him.
Good luck next week with Chicago, D.C.
In other news, I got to meet bubbaball (bjphilipb) at the game at halftime (the whole D.C. staff came up I think). It was really great to say hello and shake hands, to attatch a face to the voice. He's a great guy, and although I was on my n'th beer, he seemd to understand me well enough! He was pretty happy at halftime (of course, I was going on about Jaime "how's the back" Moreno), but it was probably a long drive home
Great to meet you Brian, and I look forward to making the trip down to visit ol' RFK.
Anyway, all kidding and team-to-team belly-aching aside, it was so great to see an MLS match with such a great atmosphere. It was a beautiful day, a pretty exciting match with a pretty good pace and lots of goals. Just awesome!!!!

Oh and Blublub:
You are always welcome to my 2nd ticket to the Metros/D.C. games, so come on up here next time, it'll be fun. And I hope to come down for at least one of the D.C./Metros games in RFK, so I hope to be able to see you then!
Also, remember that gaming lounge we were talking about, for the possible WE tourney? I think it's called Game Time Nation, on 12 St in Manhattan. We could get the whole place, or just 4 PS2s or something. They usually charge byt the hour, but they may negotioate if we plan on getting the whole place. It's pretty bare bones, but would be great for this kind of thing! I need to stop by there again and get their phone number.

Finally watched this game today during a thunderstorm (in April in Syracuse?) here this afternoon.
Wow, this was one entertaining match. This game had the pace, one-touch football, nice finishes and skill of any European or South American game I've seen this year. I can see why Slumber was so stoked to see it in person.
A couple of observations. The ref was consistently lousy. Yes, he was consistent, as he kept the whistle strapped to his finger way too much for both teams. But man, there were some BLATANT fouls on both sides that weren't called. Really shoddy officiating.
I was impressed with Gaven. But there's no way he was the best midfielder on the pitch -- not even close. Convey had a GREAT game for D.C. United. The guy's work rate was fantastic, and he was strong on both sides of the ball. Gaven was absolutely invisible in the first half, partially because D.C. played superb possession football.
Talk about a tale of two halves. D.C. United was brilliant with its one-touch football in the first half and simply lost the plot in the second half. Metrostars were a different team, putting on more pressure. But I don't think they were significantly better than in the first half; they only got more touches. D.C. lost this game more than the Metros won it, in my opinion.
Very, very, very entertaining match, though. I'm really starting to dig the MLS and realizing that I have been too much of a soccer snob the last few years, favoring Europe and South America. There's some quality, entertaining football being played on these shores, fellas.
Oh, and for my team selection: Nothing is in stone yet, but I'm leaning mightly toward ...
D.C. United.
Take care,
PK

Honestly, I'm new to this whole MLS thing, but it became clear quickly that D.C. has a couple "black holes of charisma" on their roster, Freddy aside.
(How am I doin'? Do I sound like an obnoxious footie fan yet?)
I totally agree about the officiating. Olsen was livid for the last ten minutes, he even spit in the ref's direction after when his back was turned, and continued jawing at him after the final whistle. Maybe if he watches a replay of the match, he'll realize that both sides got the short shrift, including an OBVIOUS hold on Taylor's jersey from behind, in plain view of the referee.
And speaking of that final whistle, I guess I have Wolyniec's life-threatening goal to thank for that heart-attack inducing FOUR MINUTES of stoppage time. Exciting, to say the least.

I never said Gaven would be the best midfielder on the pitch right NOW. I just said the guy is a STUD. He was younger than any other player on the pitch save Adu, and IMO contributed a lot more to the match than young Freddy.
But hey, if rooting for the front-runners is you bag, go for it. Us losers here in NYC are happpy to suffer on our own.
And Blublub, speak of the devil, there's an NYT article about the game lounge I've been talking about!

Allright, I'll let you have the last word on the ongoing "what are you smoking" debate, since you did win that one fair and square. Good match, no doubt.
As far as the officiating, it was bad but unfortunately it's been even worse. This is getting to be a real problem with the MLS.
Dead on about Convey, PK. You're now seeing what Spurs saw in him last year. It took him awhile to put that whole debacle behind him, but he's playing up to his golden boy standards now.
Yeah, I'm still definitely up for that tourney - anyone else still interested? Maybe we could time it around a scum match.

I love Convey. I think he is key to the Nat's future, moreso than nearly anyone else. He just needs to get out of that uni! I also like Ben Olson, if you can believe it. He was the original MLS teenger, and should have been in Korea but injuries have stunted his International career. I am one who hopes he has a rennaissance on the Nat's, 'cause I've always thought he had that innate soccer-sense that has been too rarely seen in Nat's of past years. He's also a guy like Richie Williams or Petke, a guy that is eay to hate when he is on the other team, but easy to love when he is on yours.
And I was wrong, Fabian is actually 22, not 20. Still, scoring goals in the Jamaican Premiere Division doesn't quite qualify him to be considered a "top" stirker. Galvan Rey, perhaps, but he may end up being one of those guys who just never fits in MLS (like sooooooo many S. American strikers the Metros have had. . . ).
Either way, it was a good game of soccer. Yes, the MLS officiating is bad and does seem to be getting worse, which is almost hard to believe.

I picked Newcastle as my favorite overall club, and the Magpies haven't won any silverware in 35 years, and that was the damn Fairs Cup.
I'm hardly a bandwagon-hitcher.

Take care,

I know you're not, PK, I'm just trying to shame some sense into you! Believe me, there are plent of D.C. bandwagoners all over the country, they hardly need anymore. Was a good match (for me) for the 1st 45 minutes. Then the DC defense just collapsed. Petke should have followed up the rebound off the header for the first goal instead of just standing there watching Fabien put home the rebound. (And not to knock Warren after the great 1st save, but he didn't "make himself big" and go towards the ball on the rebound...he just put his hand up. Still not his fault though.)
2nd goal was a nice pass by Guevara, with a solid finish. No one's fault there.
3rd goal was bush league. That's a stop I could make. Even though Rimando hasn't played well the 1st two games, Warren is a step below in quality and shouldn't have started. I can't see him playing the next game.
DC's possession can be great for stretches. They've got a solid MF with Olson, Convey, Stewart, Kovalenko, and Carroll. But they just fell asleep starting the 2nd half...it was a pathetic performance.
Petke is usually a much better defender than he was yesterday....what a terrible performance. And DC's got a problem figuring out who should be up top. Moreno is great for 60, then tires. Adu can come in for him. I figure that the other slot should be more consistently be for either Eskandarian or Cerritos. I really have no idea who should play more though. Eskandarian makes good runs, hustles, and gets into good position but can't finish. Cerritos can finish, but doesn't make the runs.
Game was a good one...but it would have been better (for the fans and me) if they played well the full 90. Ah well.
When's the next DC v. NY matchup (at the Meadowlands)?
