I have been playing video games for over 2 decades, ever since Atari & Nintendo came out and All Star Baseball for PS2 is the WORST game I've ever seen. Bases Loaded by Jaleco was better.
Why's that? The control is broken in the area of Zone Hitting and it is so clunky & clumsy that I put it back in the box w/out looking at the other features.
Let's begin:
For starters I felt that the game was very promising in features department. The franchise mode is very deep for a console for instance. But Acclaim seems to want to spend more time adding stuff but forgetting to put some cotton picking good controls.
I had taken one stadium tour (Baker Bowl was very nice & Polo Grounds) and looked through all the menus. Where's Exhibition? OK figured that out (Quick Play). Where's Season? Where's the Options where you can customize how you play? And then...
I went into Batting Practice w/Reggie Jackson at the Polo Grounds & Vlad Guerrero @ Anaheim Stadium. First tried 3D & 2D cursors & figured out what to do and then huge problems started arising. Set cursor AND pitches to Middle of Plate and was pounding the X Button to swing the bat. Let's just say that pounding any buttons in my video games is UNACCEPTABLE.
In Jaleco's Bases Loaded for Nintendo a button press gives instant response. Better control. Gamer takes a look at rest of features.
In ASB 2005 (and I got really mad when I saw this in the manual, which sucked for there was no detailed franchise instructions) to throw to a base you have to press on X for HOME, O for 1st, TRIANGLE for 2nd, and SQUARE for 3rd. No! I didn't see any option to reconfigure controls either.
Jamming on the buttons trying to do something real simple like throwing really sucks so much that I thought "The game's broken". No its just a clunky piece of crap!
Oh yeah I hit a home run by accident (Reggie Jackson). JAM X button and there it went. Zone Hitting is so absurd plus I felt no satisfaction. Where's the feeling of having hit a HR. I've gotten that in Triple Play games, NINTENDO GAMES, etc. I'd like to sue Acclaim for false advertising; their product is a DOG. And I've had this problem before w/other Acclaim games in the past. They come out crap. Fortunately I had gotten the game from EB Games so there shouldn't be a problem getting something better. Last time I ever get anything from that company.

Funny thing is I picked this up again last night as I felt I did not give the game a enough time.In ASB 2005 (and I got really mad when I saw this in the manual, which sucked for there was no detailed franchise instructions) to throw to a base you have to press on X for HOME, O for 1st, TRIANGLE for 2nd, and SQUARE for 3rd. It has the option to reverse the buttons. In the fielding options it is called THROW STYLE (normal or reverse). It is listed clearly in the manual. Oh and it was page 10 last paragraph.
How detailed exactly do you need the manual to explain this for you. Acclaim can not send someone to your house to read it for you.

I'd like to sue Acclaim for false advertising; their product is a DOG.
Why that is awfully IGN'ish of you!

Yeah Brent, what are you doing replacing chewing with chewing someone a new asshole? J/K, I actually thought the same thing when I read the post. I've had a real up and down time with ASB but in the end I found that it is a decent game of baseball but still the worst of the bunch this year.
I am a patient boy.
I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait.
My time is water down a drain.

In older baseball games like Triple Play 2001 you pressed X and the D Pad was used to map out the bases. X made a conservative throw and Square and the D Pad was used to make aggressive throws (which I used mostly). The problem comes w/the bases being mapped to the buttons on the controller instead of the D Pad. And in Triple Play the cut off man was hit automatically unless you were throwing to a base w/the D Pad. In ASB 2005 you have to hit L1 for the cut off man.bdoughty wrote:Funny thing is I picked this up again last night as I felt I did not give the game a enough time.In ASB 2005 (and I got really mad when I saw this in the manual, which sucked for there was no detailed franchise instructions) to throw to a base you have to press on X for HOME, O for 1st, TRIANGLE for 2nd, and SQUARE for 3rd. The game's not as terrible as I made it out to be, but it does some things right and it does some things wrong. If only you could map out the bases to the D-Pad instead of using 5 buttons. As it is I've gotten a little better at learning the ASB nuances.
In Batting Practice when I had thought the game was broken because I couldn't swing the bat, I figured out the problem. X button swings the bat & it works just fine. It may have been that I had the BP pitcher throwing 95 MPH fastballs from a Little League mound. In BP he doesn't stand on the mound; he stands in front. Fastballs will go right by you (I only hit 1 of about 40 w/Killebrew) but if you slow down the pitch to a slider, curve, or changeup you can see a difference. Using 2D Cursor and the slower pitches I started belting the ball around the park on Sim Pitch Speed & All Star difficulty.
I have to unlearn some Triple Play habits to really enjoy this game, but I've had some success w/Pitching and Batting. Fielding is so so and I may have to set it on automatic but I figure I'll learn it soon enough. I gotta do something about that throwing though. I'll keep it for a few more days.
The stuff in the game is incredible. The franchise mode has like whole chapters on how to do arbitration and other rules of Major League Baseball. Really incredible stuff for an Acclaim product. As Wally Bock would say "It'll get better, it'll get better".
