Fifa 10 (PS3/360) Details, updates, etc

Post by bdoughty »

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_10

FIFA 2010 is the next installment in the association football game in the FIFA series developed by EA Sports. Nothing has yet been announced but it has been reported that EDGE magazine will have an exclusive first look at the game.

According to Fifa 10's Gameplay Producer Santiago Jaramillo, a number of key areas have been worked upon.

* Many of the issues people complained about regarding Manager Mode will be solved for FIFA10. It has received a lot of attention from the development team this year. This means having more realistic results in sim matches (i.e. more realistic league table); having a more compelling transfer system; improved atmosphere, player growth, and many more.

* Ball physics will be refined and problems such as the ball bouncing too fast after it hits a player will be fixed.

* The defensive line will be deeper therefore the attacking team won't have such an edge resulting in a more realistic gameplay experience.

* Many clubs will have team-specific Commentary and the Commentators will mention the name of the actual Cup (for licensed Cups) at the start of matches instead of just playing a generic Commentary sample as in previous Fifa games.

Can't wait for edge magazine to be released.

They really need to improve the OTP match options.

Once you get in game the experience is terrific but to get into the game is just too annoying at times.

You have to give captains the ability to kick out laggards in the OTP session screen, the position select screen and in-game (which is already there).

Additionally, give the captains the ability to launch the game BEFORE everyone has clicked in. Then boot people in the next screen or in-game as needed.

Also would be nice if players can switch teams in the position-select screen or in-game as well. Maybe a spectator mode as well so that if a player puts his controller icon in the middle, he's watching the game. Then rejoin either side at any time (although the 35-second pause countdown is another annoyance).

OTP session creation options should let you create a session with less than 22 slots. You don't get anywhere near 22 players that often anyways. NHL lets you do this, have something less than 12 slots.

Most importantly, there has to be some kind of user-stat tracking stored on the server. If that means ranked OTP games, so be it. Team stats like possession and all the player ratings should be stored as well, which it isn't for OTP games (or even maybe ranked 1-on-1 games).

Don't take BAP in the same direction of the EASHL. Or at least, give the option to use real players (after all, one of the key features of FIFA is its licenses).

Leave the OTP cameras the way they are. The BAP cameras in EASHL were horrid -- along with the vertigo-inducing cameras and fake players, made regular NHL OTP games more interesting to me. In fact, it looks like Madden 10 is experimenting with FIFA OTP type of camera, which is mostly vertical but with rotation as it goes up and down, side to side on the pitch.

Sweet music to my ears, from D. Rutter:

This year we’re proud to announce that we’re including a practice mode within FIFA 10. Using the Back/Select button from the 1-on-1 arena, you’ll be able to bring up a menu enabling you to choose to play a practice match or set pieces. You can change the number of players on each side, and a little blog exclusive here - it’s multiplayer, too. Only locally though - you can’t have your online friends join your practice match. But 5 v 5 outfield players, on a full size pitch, is now a reality :)

Practicing free kicks and corner-kicks would be a great addition, assuming it's the same interface as in-game.

How do you bend those kicks anyways?

They really need a cursor and some kind of meter would be nice.

Nice article on the men behind FIFA's resurgence the last few years; newcomers to EA and former Pro Evo fans:

http://www.edge-online.com/magazine/fif ... page=0%2C0
Explaining the methodology adopted by the new FIFA engine isn’t easy, even for Paterson. He thinks hard before settling on an example to illustrate how his game works. “Maybe I could talk about a shot,” he offers, before launching into a deeper version of the criticism he sent to the FIFA gameplay team, filled with AI decision-making and detailed contextual considerations. The general principle is a drive towards complexity and realism, removing automated elements of gameplay in favour of minutely modelled and finely tuned mechanisms that offer a far greater variety of potential outcomes.

“I think fundamentally one of the things which changed in the way we build the game is we stay away from any kind of scripting,” Paterson confirms. “Before, when there were twoplayer interactions, we would script them. Two players would come together in current-gen for a header, and we would put them into scripted animation. So, you know, they put their arms around each other, and you couldn’t do anything about it once it started. It looked really nice but the outcomes from it were very limited.” The solution is to remove the shortcuts and build a system that relies on logic. Rather than simply coding ‘defender wins header’, “we have to make a system which makes the defender win, by using logical factors like height, weight, strength, heading ability,” explains Paterson. “We don’t script anything like that, it’s just: here’s the situation, here’s the context, here’s what’s logical, that’s what’s happened. It becomes harder for us to design, but it gives you the variety and the jump-out-of-your-seat moments you’re looking for.”

One of my major complaints is addressed. From a tweet by one of the developers:
Cross park passes are now generally a lot more driven - about half the time to cross the pitch.
This was frustrating this year because it was fine in last year's game. It's just too tough in '09 to effectively switch the play when defenders can run down any cross-field ball. Good to see.

For some reason free kicks and shots have never really been implemented well to the point it feels completely satisfying to me in terms of giving the user enough control. I wish developers somewhere would make a shooting system that is able to capture that.

And what about the Road to the World Cup and World Cup editions?

I usually get rid of the previous year's game months before the new one releases to get the best price.

But it might be a better idea to hold onto it and see if they fix issues like the real retarded way you get into OTP games in the new game.

And then wait until the new year to see what the WC editions do to the price of the regular game.

Take it for what it's worth, but Mr Rutter won't be too happy that this gameplay leaked early.

No, there will be different covers for different regions. I'm sure the NA cover will have a US and Mexican player on it again.

I think the additions they made to this game are going to give it a ton of life for those that don't do that much online gaming.

I don't know what they are offering in terms of online team play.
