Will do, man.

I know I was an early critic of yet another F1 mod with the release of F1 1991 LE, but I'll eat those words: It's a brilliant mod. Really fun to drive and handle these beasts.

All I need is a 60s F1 mod, and my F1 rFactor lineup will be set:

1955 F1
GP 1979
F1 1991 LE
CTDP F1 2006

Take care,
PK

Video already looks unrealistic as hell -- there's WAY too much overtaking for current F1. :P

Interesting game.

Where did you read it has RealFeel support?

I'm very skeptical of this mod having true RealFeel support. The 2.0 version of this mod was one for which the modders say, "Yes, these are properly built suspensions and work with RealFeel" when in reality, they don't.

I did MoTeC testing with the 2.00 version of this mod, and RealFeel didn't work right when accurate steering arm forces from MoTeC telemetry were inputted into the RealFeel.ini file.

Hopefully the changes in physics for the 3.00 version included properly built suspensions and not black-magic, "this feels good!" numerical alchemy with Notepad, the modus operandi of so many modders.

Take care,
PK

When you unpack the files there's a folder called support and in it, it has a .ini (config) file for realfeel. :)

Cool. Thanks.

I'll give it a go, but I'm still very skeptical. This group has promised RealFeel compatibility before, and their computations proved they're Notepad alchemists disguised as proper suspension builders. :)

But I would love a modern touring car mod that's truly compatible with RealFeel. None of the other touring cars are, even though rFactor lumps in the awesome Caterham mod as a tourer. I don't count a Caterham as a touring car!

The only touring car mod that's compatible with RealFeel is Historic GT & Touring, by far the greatest rFactor mod ever built. It scores an 11 out of 10 with me. :)

Was NAGT not compatible with RealFeel?

Yes and no. I didn't think it had very good RealFeel compatibility with the values supplied with the mod. Felt vague, a bit mushy. I never did MoTeC testing to see if the steering arm forces matched those supplied with the mod's suggested RealFeel settings.

NAGT was a big disappointment to me. Very overrated mod for all of the hype during nearly three years of development. I know these are production cars, but the physics for some of these cars resembled a dump truck. Not much fun to drive.

I also didn't like how the NAGT mod team forced you into using DX8 if you wanted to use the Mustang. I know it's hard for them to believe, but there are some racers out there who only can use DX7 or prefer it because the framerate gain is much more significant than the slight loss in visual quality from DX8.

Now that I have a PS3 I did a little ebay shopping and picked up a couple of racing games.

The F1 Championship game is pretty fun but has been covered here before so I won't say too much about it.

I did also however get the new Ferrari Challenge, and it is a total blast. The spiritual successor to the old Dreamcast game has arrived.

It mostly covers the 430 Challenge series, which I have seen in person, and it does a darn good job. The car handles like it should, has some weight and does not stop on a dime. The AI seems good, as I've seen both good and bad things from it. It did seem to me that most of the bone head moves by the ai came from the backmarkers (who I spend a lot of time with!), so I'll keep an eye on it as I play more. It did seem the most skittish when I screwed something up. When racing clean they fight for lines and seem to challenge fairly.

The season mode covers the US, and European Challenge series, and each uses different tracks. The race weekend follows the real format (qualifying then 2 races over 2 days).

Control with the joystick takes a little getting used to (especially the shifting as none of their mappings are what I'm used to), but after a short amount of time it comes to you.

Graphically the game is beautiful, running in full 1080p and at what looks to be 60FPS.

For only 40 bones (much cheaper on ebay!) it is an awesome racer for sim fans on PS3.

Grant, is that the System 3/Eutechnyx game from last summer? If it is, I'd be interested to know how closely your thoughts tally with mine (not thread policing in any way - hate that stuff. This just happens to be where I wrote some impressions):

http://www.digitalsportspage.com/module ... +challenge

Somehow it feels like much longer since I played that game. Pay particular attention to how much Rodster was willing to pay for it.

Just downloaded this from rFC, and I'm not seeing a support folder in the unpack. Hmm.

You sure you're not confusing this with the new Formula Nippon 2008 mod, which contains a support folder with RealFeel settings and controller.ini files for a G25 and DFGT/DFP?

Take care,

Yes, it's the same game. I really like the feel of the cars. I'm much more laid back about it when it comes to consoles. If I'm steering using only my thumb then I don't expect total realism. I think however that they handle pretty realistically, and certainly don't feel like the ones in Grid.

The AI can be strange. For the most part they seem ok, but after reading your post I have noticed them diving to the inside on a turn, sometimes slowing themselves up so much that I can easily swing by on the outside. I have gotten a few "love taps" from them after I push them around a bit, so there does seem to be some sort of retaliation programming going on. No big deal there, it happens in real racing!

I've only gotten a few full races under my belt so far, and certainly haven't been lapping the field like you have, but so far I'm liking it a lot.

Grant, I traded the game in before they patched it so some of my impressions, particularly related to difficulty, might be invalid now. Glad to hear you're enjoying it, mate, and half-tempted to pick it up again myself...

This might be a bit off the beaten track, but is there any sort of F1 management sim ? I've got the old EA one, and probably Microprose's Grand Prix Manager 2 somewhere, but wondered if there was a more recent version ?

Of course, it would be one where the ruleset would have to be configurable, because it changed every year :D

Dave, there was one in development called F1 Championship Manager. It spent what must have been two or three years in alpha testing, then I stopped paying attention for a year and can find absolutely no evidence that it still exists.

Other than that, the last major commercial release I know of is the EA one. I seem to recall a German dev team having a management sim that RTL published not so long ago, but the reviews weren't so hot and I can't currently remember anything about it - I'll have a quick dig and see what turns up.

Beyond that, there are always the online games like Batracer, though they're not in anything like the same kind of depth as the old Microprose stuff.

Even had a look on F1 Gamer, there's nothing there more recent than the EA one (which still seems to be being updated by the fans, though the process looks a little fiddly to say the least).

Must be a real niche market then.

Dave, the game I was thinking of is RTL Racing Team Manager:

http://www.virtualr.net/rtl-racing-team-manager-review/

I have seen it on sale somewhere in this country, but it doesn't sound all that clever.

While I'm here, one for the touring car fans and those who come over all misty-eyed upon hearing the words ToCA Touring Car Championship - Knockhill for rFactor:

This is for Piggy. New textures released for Grand Prix Legends:

Culmone does outstanding work on texture improvements for rFactor tracks, so I'm sure his GPL work is top-shelf. Enjoy!

I almost had one of my 'OMG I'm psychic' moments when I got an email from New Star games on Wed talking about their new F1 game...but it's a top down racer which has some management elements in it...I might download the demo and see what it's like.

Downloaded the New Star Grand Prix demo this morning, and after three races it seems like good fun. There seems to be less to do when you're not competing than there is in the New Star Soccer games, but the racing is surprisingly good fun. My only major gripes so far are that I do get a bit of stuttering from time to time (reading the forums it looks like it might be specific to Vista users) and that while it's nice to see variable weather, it'd be nicer if it didn't rain at some point during every race.

Is Ferrari Challenge (PS3) worth $18? I was thinking of buying it or is SBK World Superbike for $30 the better choice? ;)
