Yeah, who gave harsh responses? They all sounded pretty reasonable and without sounding high and mighty to me. Seriously, I don't think anything wrong with your question, but the possible negative consequences far outweigh any short term cash gain. If you are being screwed over by the company with your expenses in some way address that in particular, not by justifying it by taking money that was a mistake. No court of law or HR department will accept that argument when and if they were to discover the error. The only harsh response was the gross and as usual extreme exaggeration and assumption that all corporations are bad and anti-employee.

Plus you said you liked the company, so do the right thing and give it back.

Once an area video store gave me $20 too much change for a rental, and I didn't say a word and walked out. But that's not the same company that's employing me and providing a living for me and my family.

I would return the cake if I was you.
