ESPN Baseball Impressions ...

The game is a blast online. Once you get a feel for it, even a bit of lag can't throw you off. I played a beanball war type game, Mariners-Cubs, where we each got two pitchers tossed for hitting batters (very frustrating to try and get Prior's pitch count up only to have him tossed and see Kerry Woods come in). The game was a little sluggish and he was trying to take advantage of it by drilling first pitch fastball strikes. Once I caught on, I just went to the contact swing and swung as soon as I saw the ball released. No need for power when the ball is coming in at 101 mph. I smacked him around pretty good until he was forced to start mixing it up.
I've had a great time with this one so far. It's threatening to seriously cut into my Splinter Cell and ESPN NFL time.

Well, as soon as people stop swinging at every ball thrown their way, the first problem should go away. The early games have been strikeout fests, but I'm pretty sure that will change dramatically as people get more comfortable.Badgun wrote:Spooky wrote:So what is the verdict on online play???
I have not seen a whole lot mentioned here...
The 2 main gripes I've heard about online play is people that throw nothing but junk out of the zone the whole time and people who use the Cubs or the Red Sox and use starters as their relievers.
I'm going to try a game against a stranger in a few minutes and see what happens...I can only imagine.
Not much to be done about the second problem, but that's what you have to expect when you venture into knucklehead land...

I just played an incredible game. Mets v. Braves. Hampton can't find the zone early, he walks 5 in 2 1/3 and gives up 6 runs. He heads to the showers early. T.Hodges, J, Wright, Will Cunnane, and CJ Nitkowsi combine to give up only 3 hits and 1 run over the rest of the game. The relievers kept the Braves in it and in the 9th they rally and get the tying run on base. With two outs, I get a pop up that should end the game. Then ... I blow it. I have pop up lock off and sure enough I blow it at the biggest time. Tie game. The game then goes 19 innings until Furcal ends it with a 3 run HR in the 19th. An exhausting but rewarding game experience. Every at bat in the extra frames was filled with tension. This game rocks.

Pardon my ignorance, but who's Alf ?
Like the furry alien Alf ?

"The players come from all over the world, the money from deep underneath the Persian Gulf, but, as another, older City poster campaign put it, this is their city. They may now exist in the global spotlight, but they intend to keep it that way."

Yeah, one of my favorites with the Cubs, every time Aramis Ramierez comes to the plate: "They don't call you 'Ara-miss' for nothing."Slumberland wrote:Man, they sure recorded a lot of player-specific taunts in this game. One of my favorites:
"Hey Piazza, where's Alf?"
There's also a nice one with the pirates where they make fun of Chris Stynes's stance. If they had just made the overall crowd noise more animated, this game would have plenty of atmosphere.
It is quickly turning into one of my favorite baseball games ever. I played a few more games this weekend and am having a blast. Each game is really quite varied. I've had some HR fests and some very low-scoring, small-ball games. Highlight so far was throwing a 2-hot CGSO with Kerry Wood against the Pirates.
