10spro wrote:This is itunes related. I purchased a couple of apps online for my iphone and I just recently had a new rig built. It should all be governed by your itunes ID regardless of what computer you're on (as far as apps via the itunes store).

Sniff sniff... its.... beautiful:)

It really is amazing how far things have come for Apple. I remember when I was a little kid and my dad used to write articles for MacWorld magazine and we'd get to play around with all the now ancient, antiquated Apple hardware. I couldn't be happier to see Apple where it stands today.

It's great how Jobs pulls that floppy out of his jacket. Pure sensationalism :):):)

Apple gearing up for $99 iPhone?

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-10161 ... eStories.0

Price is right, as long as it's not too stripped down.

What it really needs though is to get on other carriers besides AT&T.

I would buy one in a heartbeat if I could get Verizon service on it. I've been with Verizon for the last 4 years and it's so good I wouldn't consider switching carriers.

Agreed, which is why I often wonder: iPhone or Blackberry...which to get?

My next phone will probably be the Verizon "Dare".

People are tiring of the iPhone a bit due to the fact that now just about everybody owns one but it is still, hands down, the best smart phone on the market. It isn't even close. Just like with the iPod we're seeing companies chasing and chasing after the iPhone but nothing compares.

I have a few friends and coworkers who are using iphones and not all of them are happy. Overall they like the phone and interface but there are nagging issues that are giving them buyers remorse.

For my coworkers it's all about email. In a business environment it's still not as good as a BB. Email doesn't update as fast as a BB, and when opening up a larger email it can take a while to show the text. It also lacks an email search function, which is a huge deal to some people.

My non business friends who do a lot of texting just don't like typing on it. One friend is already on his third one in only a few months. It keeps breaking on him.

I also was able to test one for a week at work and wasn't happy with the slow email as well.

I think the Pre has the potential to be a superior device. I just hope it makes its way to AT&T sooner rather than later.

The Safari Beta is pretty cool. Seems much faster than even Firefox.

Has anyone played with iLife 09 yet?

Faces gets mixed reviews overall but overall, it seems to be good to have than not.

Places is one thing I was already interested in. Before iPhoto '09 added it, people were using other software to geotag their photos.

Slide shows exported and sync'd to iPhone looks great.

I haven't touched iMovie but I take mostly short videos with my camera.

Thing which is intriguing is the piano and guitar lessons in Garage Band. Anyone check these out?

Hi lads,

My PC hard drive died and I've reinstalled a new one - now when I try to sync my iPod (which was previously synced to the iTunes program on the old/dead harddrive) - to the iTunes on the new hard drive it won't let me. I know I can manually transfer the files over but is there an easier way to do this and also is there a way I can keep my song ratings and play counts?

Apologies if this has been asked before (I think I may have asked it before myself).

Cheers,
Macca

I've had to restore my library from my iPod because of hard drive failure on the computer.

But I'm not sure the play counts and song rating got preserved. In fact, I didn't even pay attention to whether the song ratings in iTunes showed up o the iPod the same way.

Anyways, this is probably a good starting point:

Thanks wco. I ended up using iPodAccess which transferred the files, play counts and ratings to the new HD/iTunes.

I probably could have started a new thread on this topic, but this question is pretty simple. What is the best back up utility for pictures and videos on my Macbook? In the past I have used cds and dvds. Are memory sticks are the preferred method now? I'm afraid one day it might be too late and I'll regret not backing up my files.

Thanks.

Since Pictures and Videos are updated frequently, your best off using an external hard drive and the built in "Time Machine" (assuming you're using Leopard) to keep those items protected.

Of course, the best backup includes BOTH a local backup and a portable/remote FAILSAFE option. So, depending upon the size of your files I would recommend using (dare I say it) Microsoft's Live Mesh or Dropbox (http://www.getdropbox.com/) to keep them sync'd on the web and quickly accessible from any machine. Videos may be too large for this method, so Time Machine coupled with DVD (DATA!) discs is probably your best bet.

And shop around and see if you can get a Firewire drive for not too much more than just a USB 2.0 drive.

They're faster.

I haven't done the offline backup thing. I tried to sync an iPhoto library to iDisk and it seized up my machine.

I think a better choice would be to back up to an external drive and throw that in a safe deposit box.

Or I was thinking about getting a fire safe.

Important thing is backing up. Hundreds or thousands of photos are impossible to replace.

Yup...get two external drives and keep one off-site. Make backups often on the one in your house and then do incremental on the one off-site. Leave it at the office or a buddies house, whatever. Just don't keep both at your house.

Thanks for the suggesions. I'm going to look in to an external hard drive this week. How much can I expect to pay?

If my memory is correct, eight months ago I got an Arion external drive for about $100 or so 500GB.

That's about right, around $100 for 500 GB but USB 2.0 only.

Probably even less, so that's 5
GB per dollar or more.

Firewire tends to be more expensive:
