Zeppo's there, lucky bastard! I smell a 1-0 US win, with the goal coming from a set piece.Naples39 wrote:USA-Mexico tonight from Columbus!! Will some new Mexican blood be able to break the long run of futility for the Mexicans on US soil? Or will the US take their third consecutive 2-0 victory at Columbus for a qualifier?
Forecast is for low 40s, windy with a good chance of rain.

With Mascherano and Gago in midfield, the albiclestes did a great job controlling the ball away fromt he hosts in Marseille. Messi had a great second half and at times I thought they were playing in River Stadium the way they had possession of the ball agaisnt Les bleus at home.
Ribery & Anelka were dangerous for France but nothing J.P. Carrizo could not handle. This may have been a friendly match but there were some tense moments. The hand of God is doing his job.

Another game against Mexico, another 2-0 victory.
Pretty mediocre performances from much of the lineup, but we still had enough to beat the Mexicans. As is the norm in these games, Mexico misses a golden opportunity or two, and the US eventually breaks through on a set piece.
Great game for Bradley, as he not only scored twice, but with Kljestan having a really off game Bradley was primarily responsible for breaking up Mexican attacks and coordinating the offense going forward.
Dempsey played well, and Hejduk covered a lot of ground and defended his flank well. And of course Howard is probably the classiest player on the roster.
Let's hope the US racks up some more early victories in the qualifying campaign removing all tension from the process.

Wow that was so much fun. Crazy weather, but once inside we were under a roof at the stage end. Of course, at certain times the rain came in sideways. That's ok though, because it stopped raining after a while, and the winds calmed down. The parking lot was pretty wild, though, with pop-up tents flying around all over the place.
Bradley was awesome. Timmy Howard got the first cheap shot, but there were others, notaby the hack from behind on Jozy just before the 2nd goal.
I don't hate them really, but damn it gets sickening how childish the Mexican players get when they are losing. They really do seem to try to end careers with cheap shots when things aren't going their way, and it's a shame they have so little respect for the game or their opponents. They can go to hell.
2-0 bitches, all over again. I can't wait to go to the Azteca and maybe steal a point from them there.

Yes, that hack on Jozy was pretty bad.
I also have to say, it was deeply satisfying to see two of Mexico's old guard of players and longtime villains in the rivalry, Rafa Marquez and Oswaldo Sanchez, crash and burn in what was likely their last chance to beat the US in a qualifier on US soil in their careers.
Marquez's red card was incredibly stupid and killed his team's chances, and that last goal against Sanchez was pretty embarrassing, even if the game was already decided at that point.
And as if the Mexicans aren't sore losers enough on the field, there is video floating around this morning of a Mexican coach slapping Hejduk in the face after the game!! Hilarious!

I somehow, somehow missed the first half because I thought kickoff was at 8pm. (I am dumbfounded by my stupidity...)
It seemed the wind played a factor in strategies in the second half, especially how deep the US played after the red card. Though that wind was really whipping, and the few crosses that Mexico had in the final third were dangerous.
Even with that said, I don't think I've ever seen Mexico play so poorly. They couldn't keep possession in the midfield (part in thanks to M. Bradley and the US defense, part because Mexico was playing poorly), and their direct play was horrific. I'm very happy to see 'em lose, and am wondering if they fire Sven soon.

Meh. 1A beats 1B in CONCACAF with neither looking like a threat to do a damn thing come finals time...again.
And they want to give more finals spots to this region?
Absolute quintessential USMNT performance: Industrious, spirited, opportunistic and totally devoid of creativity and attacking ingenuity. There were a half dozen times where "attacks" petered out with nary a single run being made into the Mexico 18 yard box. Passing was precise and generally without any particular attacking intent whatsoever. I have a hard time envisioning play like this getting us a point in Azteca, no matter how poorly Mexico are playing these days.
I was impressed with Bradley's ambition and Landon was huge on both goals, obviously. I would dearly like to by Frankie a beer as thanks for all the seriously excellent moments he's given me as I enjoy one crunching tackle after another.

Why not?fsquid wrote:The reason this region has so many is because they expanded the field to 32 back in 98. Can't give them all to Europe.

I'd rather see another European or African team in there rather than El Salvador, T&T etc.

And, of course, the extra place would have nothing to do with the fact that FIFA Vice-President (and loyal Blatter stooge, and convicted ticket toutto the tune of $1m) Jack Warner is CONCACAF President ?
Ooooh no. Not at all.

It's not even a full place. It is a half place since the 4th placed team has to enter a playoff.davet010 wrote:And, of course, the extra place would have nothing to do with the fact that FIFA Vice-President (and loyal Blatter stooge, and convicted ticket toutto the tune of $1m) Jack Warner is CONCACAF President ?

4th place in CONCACAF.....Christ, they have 3 full places by right ???
Looks like Warner has been funnelling more money into Blatter's bulging sack than even their external auditors thought.
