For the third time in the last year I am once again reinstalling rFactor on my racing machine and my dedicated server. Hopefully, this will get us back going again with some fun DSP poker nights.
In the process of doing this, I was going back through all the new tracks and new mods released for rFactor in 2008 and I came up with my top 10 list just for fun. This is only for new releases in 2008, not updates or patches to already existing mods or tracks. It does include a couple demos/betas, only because those I mention were better than most supposedly completed mods.
According to rFactor Central's database, there were 175 new tracks released in 2008 and 75 new mods. Here are my own personal Top 10s for 2008. Your results may vary.

Fun idea, Don! I'm not sure if I can pick 10 for each, but here are my tops for 2008. My list includes updates and patches, too:
Top 10 rFactor Tracks for 2008:
1 - Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course 1.00 6/13/08
2 - Rouen-Les-Essarts 1.01 1/27/08
3 - Long Beach 2007 1.50 11/22/08
4 - Le Mans 1972-1986 1.10 2/8/08
5 - Interlagos GP4 3.10 12/16/08
6 - Nordschleife The Ring 2007 2.20 6/16/08
========================
Top 10 rFactor Mods for 2008:
1 - Historic GT & Touring Cars 1.01 (Far and away No. 1. The greatest rFactor mod EVER released.)
2 - Caterham 1.50
3 - F1 2006 CTDP 1.00
4 - Legends Cars 1.00
5 - CSGT Holiday Preview 2.50 (Demo)
6 - EOAA DBR9 Challenge 1.05
7 - NAGT 1.00
A mod must have proper RealFeel compatibility for me to even consider it. I know people gush about iDT's CART and Champ Car mods and MMG's F1 mods, but those modding groups refuse to use carFactory to build suspensions and refuse to make their mods compatible with RealFeel, so they're out for me. Arrogant pricks.
There were a few mods released after I broke my arm in December that I haven't been able to try but excite me, such as Grand Am, Aurora 1979 GP 79 add-on, CART Factor, F1 1991 and IndyCar Series 2008 1.1. Hopefully I can give them a spin soon!
Take care,
PK

Yep, Rodster correctly pointed out that the F1 1988 mod was released in early 08. For some reason I thought it was 2007. Either way, it is an under appreciated mod that I did spend some time with this year. So I have revised the mods list to reflect this. Also that post above now has clickable links to all the tracks and mods I am referencing in case there are some you want to give a go.Rodster wrote:I noticed the F1 1988 mod didn't make your list.

My cast came off Friday, and I returned to PC sim racing that night with mixed, interesting results.
Oval sims were fine. You don't need a lot of range of motion to play them, so they were comfortable.
Live For Speed was close to fine. I was lapping within a second of my usual race lap times after just three laps despite almost no mobility with my left wrist.
rFactor was not fine. For some reason, rFactor with RealFeel hurt and fatigued my wrist, even while wearing a brace. That's a compliment to RealFeel, as it re-creates the jolts and undulations of tracks so well that those shocks put a good hurting into my healing joint.
LFS has a much more progressive force feedback across the steering range without big spikes from bumps, so it almost felt more like physical therapy than torture. RealFeel sometimes can feel dead or weak at the center and then spikes when you hit a bump. Not cool for me right now!
So it looks like I'm sticking with NR 2003 and LFS for a short time until physical therapy helps regain the mobility and strength in my arm. I'm telling my therapist that sim racing will be part of my rehab!
Anyone up for some NR 2003 or LFS?
Take care,
PK

Well overall that sounds like good news. I was just thinking it was time for loading up NR2003 with the latest COT mods and 2009 cars if they are available and running some Daytona. I still think NR2003 provides the best stock car experience of any PC racing sim on the market today. I'll see if I can get a dedicated NR2003 server going. I have forgotten all the magic it takes to get one setup, but I think I at least saved some bookmarks of useful info from the last time I had one working. I would also be up for some LFS anytime. Thanks to you I got back into that sim after being away from it for awhile.

Cool, Don. Thanks! I'm using the superspeedway.net COT mod instead of Dan Nisbet's. Even Nisbet admitted his was just a holdover until ss.net finished its mod last year.DChaps wrote:Well overall that sounds like good news. I also would LOVE to do some short-track stuff with the SImodified.com Whelen mods or the Saturday Night Stock Car mods. That's some of the most enjoyable oval racing I've done.
Let me know if you need any help getting NR 2003 fired up again. Same goes for anyone else, although I sense impending PC sim tumbleweeds in here on the eve of the RACE 360 release.

Take care,
PK

You need to be a registered member of the forum to download the mod. Then you'll see the Car of Tomorrow mod.Rodster wrote:PK where on the site did you find the mod? The link i'm posting shows no such mod.

Yes, that should work. In fact, you probably do not even have to uninstall the other mod. At one point I believe I had two COTs in the same NR2003 install and it just allowed you to select which one you wanted to use from the main menu.Rodster wrote:I have another question fellas. I have a different COT mod installed. Can I just delete it from the NR2003 and install the new COT mod?

Yes, I got the validation email. When I click on the link to validate the account I am taken back to the site and receive this message:Rodster wrote:Did you check your email Mix? I'm guessing I won't be able to see and download the mod until the admin reviews and approves my account.SS.net wrote:Thank you mixdj1. Your registration has been successful. Indeed. It's killer. I could race it all night long.Rodster wrote:Thanks, worked like a champ and btw this is one great mod.
The only NR 2003 mod I like as much as the SS.net COT's are the SImodified.com Whelen Modifieds:
http://www.simodified.com/downloads.html
These are AWESOME on short tracks such as Hickory, Bowman-Gray, Stafford or Thompson. You must have the PWF Busch Series mod installed to use them:

I'm thinking of trying either the Enhancements or Updated Tracks from Revamped Reloaded. The Enhancements offer better AI, more realistic collision detection and more to NR 2003. The Updated Tracks offer that and better graphics:

Here's a video of action from the new Daytona Shootout 2009 track from Revamped Reloaded. Ten-car race with three human drivers, seven AI cars. Looks pretty damn realistic:
