Circuit City going belly-up
All stores closing; all inventory liquidated:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28691963/
Hate to profit from CC's demise, but there will be some deals at stores during the liquidation.
It's about time we stop kidding ourselves by calling this a recession. I also was in the working world during the 1991 recession, and this one seems WAY worse.
The retail writer for the Syracuse paper is calling this a "decession." I think that's a pretty apt description.
Take care,
PK

The way it's worded I can't tell if they are going to liquidate it to outside sources or if there will be in store deals.pk500 wrote:All stores closing; all inventory liquidated:

I told you cats in the another thread, we are heading into the "Great Depression II". The reason no politician or anyone from Wall Street wants to use that expression is because it would cause worldwide panic.pk500 wrote:All stores closing; all inventory liquidated:

To be fair, Circuit City has been hanging on by a thread for years and many people were predicting they'd be out of business by year's end before anyone even saw the banking crisis coming.
Also, I'll believe we're going into Great Depression II when obesity is no longer among the nation's most pressing health issues.
I have been hunting for a new TV though so I'd love to see some massive markdowns in that regard.

When the financial and Wall Street collapse had begun. Financial analyst along with Washington politicians had begun saying that if AIG or several other large banks or insurance houses were allowed to collapse it would have triggered a depression. That's one of the primary reasons for bailing out AIG, Freddie and Fannie.Naples39 wrote: Also, I'll believe we're going into Great Depression II when obesity is no longer among the nation's most pressing health issues.

The one in Syracuse was still stocked to the gills Dec. 23.greggsand wrote:The CC in my hood has looked like some looted the place for about 3 months now. About the only thing left is old Tube TV's & land-line phones.

I agree. Maybe it was different in other places but the Chicago area didn't like Circuit City. I would never see any of them busy, even during the holidays.XXXIV wrote:Im surprised they didnt go under a few years ago. Almost every time I went into one it was empty.

I'm sad to see the Syracuse CC go. I always liked it better than Best Buy -- smaller, cleaner, much more helpful and knowledgeable staff.

This article pretty much backs that up.skinsfan wrote:Gordon Brothers going to do this liquidation like they did CompUSA and the CC stores closed earlier.
They mark everything up to MSRP and start at 20% off and go from there.

"Typically, closeout sales are final: no refunds or exchanges, so think twice before snapping up a big-ticket item like an HDTV. Also, keep in mind that closeout prices often aren't as rock-bottom low as you'd think; make sure to comparison shop online, and don't be fooled by big "75% OFF!" signs on items that have been marked up."

CC always seemed more willing to deal than BB. I got a real great deal on my HDTV 5 years ago there, when it had just come out into the market.
Now we're reduced to BB and what, Costco or Wal Mart? That's not good for competition and the BB/CC duopoly had killed off many of the regional chains and independent HT stores.
But online is taking over. People are buying big flatscreens online and getting white-glove delivery for free. Watch for the states to go after Amazon and other big sites to collect sales taxes. The state of NY apparently won a case against Amazon recently so other states may follow suit.
It's good to search and get product info on the web and order it in one step. But checking it out firsthand before making a major purchase will be something to be missed.

Replying to my own quotesnaz16 wrote:We purchased a 52" Sony xbr6 with a free Blue Ray player thrown in for $2300 the day after Xmas. We still haven't got it...been told its on backorder. I wonder if I'm even going to get it now

I've never heard that. LCD TV's come well packaged in Styrofoam. It's always best to stand up the box so something doesn't damage the front or back of the box therefore damaging the TV.snaz16 wrote:Replying to my own quotesnaz16 wrote:We purchased a 52" Sony xbr6 with a free Blue Ray player thrown in for $2300 the day after Xmas. But I have to go pick it up in about an hour. I have an F-150 pickup. My question is being an LCD,can I lay the tv down in the bed of the truck,or does it need to sit in the up position. I thought I read somewhere where this might be a problem.

It's plasma that can't lie flat on their back.snaz16 wrote:Replying to my own quotesnaz16 wrote:We purchased a 52" Sony xbr6 with a free Blue Ray player thrown in for $2300 the day after Xmas. OK, first off, thanks for the replies. Here's tonites story. Went to the CC, and find out the tv has been there since Dec 29,despite 3 calls and a personal visit by myself a week ago, only to be told the tv was on backorder. So I got the tv,and when bringing up the free Blue Ray player that was shown on my receipt for $249, I was told by the young man at the loading station, that I should pretty much forget that. I'm not happy with that answer, being a deal is a deal. (the wife on the other hand is happy that we got a $3400 tv for $2200) I ask to speak to the manager.
The manager tells me pretty much the same thing, and that the liquidation begins tomorrow. Having remembered the Ipod/mp3 thread discussed here earlier, my 53 yr old ass has been thinking about a mp3 player, since I do have a lot of music DL'd on my computer, and the 100 cd player on the lanai is beginning to be a little finnicky, I ask the manager instead of the Blue Ray ( I do have a PS3 in my back room) I'll take the 180gb Zune for the exact same price off thier hands(fully expecting to be told f*ck off), and the manager says, thats an easy trade off
Frickin works for me.
Sooo...short story long, if you got any credit with CC...might be worth dickering. Bdough, Db...might be able to parlay that extra into something else. Just wondering if Bose makes a docking station for the Zune? My 24 yr old son thinks I'm nuts trying to keep up with all this tech sh!t. I love it,keeps the brain flowing
Time to go pop a brewski and start playing with this zune..40,000 songs is a lot of music
