Well boys I tried the F1 1991 mod and I like it. I love the sound of the cars as they have a low growl engine sound. Btw don't forget to download the sound update for the mod. I don't know how accurate the physics are as i'll let you lads figure that out.
But at least i'm having fun power sliding these bad boys around Suzuka.
I wasn't going to bother with it, since it's the league edition where all cars have the same physics rather than the fully fledged public edition, but it sounds like you're having fun so I'll download it later. Cheers for the heads-up.
Nine more days until the cast comes off; then we'll see how the arm feels and if I can drive with a brace. In the interim, you f*ckers are KILLING me ...
Take care,
PK

Bet that cheered him up, Rod. I've read the same thing in various places, as it happens.
I'm tired and can't be bothered to set my wheel up so I've got no impressions on the physics or anything like that. Models seem generally pretty good, I noticed the tachometer on the Modena Lamborghini was reflecting the scenery, which is probably a feature of all mods that I've never seen before but impressed me anyway, and the sounds...well, I didn't like the sounds, but the mod profile says they're work in progress and taken from a 1988 mod so I can live with that. The Ford engines after the patch are alright (in-car, at least - the engine note from external cameras seems a good deal too high-pitched), the Ferrari and Modena Lambo in-car sounds suit their V12s well, but otherwise there's work to do.
I'll come back when I'm awake enough to get the wheel out and run it properly. Oh, and using keyboard control with aids off is a mistake.
Adam did you install the sound pack for the 1991 mod? IMO the F1 1988 mod has the best sound period. I don't know if that's what a real F1 car sounded like back then but man do those cars sound scary.
Yes, mate, I have the sound pack. I did a bad job of saying so in making very brief and very unclear reference to it in the previous post - it only affects the cars with Ford engines. The in-car sound there is alright, the external sound isn't. Not a single one of the sounds is absolutely right, to my ears at least, but none of them are final either so it's not something I'll be having sleepless nights over.
Keep an eye on the rFactor Central WIP section for the progress of the public edition. You'd imagine it can't be more than a few months away.
F1 1988's sounds eventually became very good, I agree. The sounds in the initial release were much, much worse than the ones in the 1991 league edition, a lot of good work being done between beta and full release.
Edit: Rod, have a listen to this. Satoru Nakajima, Spa 1987 in the Lotus Honda. Nakajap didn't ever reach the limits of his machine but you'll get a good idea of the noises involved - http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=OxVpOfWyj ... re=related
If it sounds closer to the 1988 mod they're in trouble, since the Fezza has a V12 and not a single car running in 1988 had one, but what a glorious racket it makes. If I ever come to power, my first act will be to ensure that a V12 is mandatory in a Formula One car, and that it sounds like that.
Aye, that's a satisfying sound too, and the GP79 Ligier has the added bonus of being one of the nicest, most compliant and fastest cars in the mod. Speaking of GP79 (and I will be again in a minute), I've just tried the Arrows A2 for the very first time, and it's a remarkable thing to drive. Not because it's any good, although you can tell that it represents the beginning of a good idea, but because it's the first single-seater mod car I've ever driven that feels like it steers from the rear. It'll try to kill you at every turn, but it'll do so very slowly so as to give you plenty of time to save yourself. A very odd beast, but also quite a potent weapon on fast tracks with few corners and no elevation change, like Silverstone and...well, like Silverstone.
Quick thoughts:
- F1 1991 LE. It isn't, in my opinion, a particularly compelling single-player mod. I would imagine that it's very good, though, at what it's designed to do, which is to allow close online racing at all skill levels. It's not a difficult drive, and I couldn't imagine running more than 10 or so laps at a time by myself, but because it's not an easy car to lose control of it should be the ideal Poker Night vehicle.
- Laguna Seca v1.2 is very, very nice. It's currently on the front page of rFactor Central and it's well worth downloading.
- CART Factor: Prologue is lovely. Good car models, excellent sounds, and physics that are, to me, a convincing representation of a 1998 CART car. PK will probably get along well with them, because the tyre model is very good and slides are predictable and controllable. Make sure, though, that the tyres and brakes are warmed up before you push.
- GP79's attention to detail continues to astound me. Just tonight, I noticed that in Historical mode, the mod makers ensured not only that the Lotus 80 is not available outside of the 3 tracks it raced on, but that it's also not available if you're Carlos Reutemann, who wouldn't race it. You've got to be Mario to use the car in races, just as it was in 1979. My inner geek loves that.
- Thinking particularly of Rod here, because I mentioned this track in reply to a question on the Racing 2008/2009 thread, there's a track listed under Temporary Circuits on rFactor Central called Detroit Street. It's a recreation of the old Detroit layout I used to illustrate that F1 has always had tracks that didn't really encourage racing. Have a go and tell me a) how Watson won there from 17th on the grid and b) how many times you can get an F1 1985 or F1 1988 car out of 2nd gear.
By the way, the Daytona Prototype mod is pretty darn good fellas. I took the beta for a run around Watkins Glen, and everything felt right. The cars have power but still handle decently, they certainly will be good for a poker night. I know they still are tweaking it and looking for feedback from the community, but even as it stands now its a pretty good mod.
- Tried Netkar tonight, very briefly, and came away distinctly unimpressed. While it's fine to look at and listen to, and my early impressions of the damage model are positive, it's very easy to lock tyres and I'm not getting all that much useful feedback through the wheel. I did no more than 5 laps and have done no tweaking to perfect my wheel settings, so take that for what it's worth, but I'll be playing it again only because I owe it a little bit longer.
- My inner historian has just kicked in. That Ligier you drive in GP79 has got a DFV in the back...Ligier and Matra parted ways at the end of 1978 and only got back together very briefly early the next decade. My last post was the sound of me failing the test...
Just spent a little more time with the Grand Slam mod, and I'm liking it more. Certainly I'm biased, but it has a much better feel to me than the Fabcar mod. The cars feel like they have a bit more weight, and the back end will get very loose if you abuse the accelerator. The AI is pretty good also, I haven't been blind-sided by anyone, they make it tough to pass, and I've also seen them wipe out on their own. Ran some laps with 20 cars at Seabring and it was a hoot.
"The video shows a lap in the Williams FW13 around Imola as we´re getting to hear a set of new sounds. Based on a mod for F1 Challenge, F1 1989 will include all cars and drivers of the 1989 season, featuring new sounds, physics and much more."
OK, I'll play contrarian here. We're going to have three separate rFactor mods for just a four-year era of historic F1 racing (1988, 1989, 1991)?
That's f*cking ridiculous, especially since no one has done a proper F1 season mod from the 60s, early 70s or early 80s (all turbo), which were infinitely more interesting eras than the late 80s and early 90s, IMO.
Guess it will only be a matter of time before someone fills the hand with a 1990 F1 mod.
Take care,
PK
