2008 NFL Season

Alex, I agree. I hate replay and I think NFL refs are horrible. I just don't think the refs are necessarily cheating....ooops...forgot about that Polamalu TD against the Chargers and the point spread in that game
I also agree with you regarding delay of game. Delay of game in the NFL is pretty much the equivalent of the "neighborhood play" at second base and it should be that way. If the clock hits zero it should be a flag.

I was still screaming about that spike all the way through the challenge.vader29 wrote:I thought for sure that spiking the ball on first and goal with almost a minute left was going to come back to bite the Steelers but wow what a finish. Possible shot at the #1 seed in the AFC, although that hasn't worked out too well the last few times they have had it.

I'm happy as hell they got the td there though, as I don't trust the Steelers to get even one inch if they went for it on 4th. As terrible as their 3rd and 1 and 4th and 1 runs have been this year, that third and one pass play was even worse. I'd take getting stopped for nothing and kicking a field goal over turning the ball over.

See, I thought that Steelers TD looked like a TD on replay. The tip of the ball clearly was over the goalline, and the receiver's feet appeared to be down at the time of the catch. It's about as close as a call can get, but I think the replay officials got it correct.
It's remarkable how the momentum has shifted in both conferences. The Panthers have gotten red hot while the Giants have stumbled, and I think the Steelers are finding ways to win while the Titans look more like the team people expected at the beginning of the season. Right now, those are the two teams I would expect to see in the Super Bowl.
It's also good that Cardinals fans can enjoy a division title, because their playoff run is going to be very brief.

I used a poor choice of words. I didnt think the guy was cheating. I just think hes an incompetent idiot. He used two completely different standards in the two halves.Leebo33 wrote: I just don't think the refs are necessarily cheating....ooops...forgot about that Polamalu TD against the Chargers and the point spread in that game![]()
As for that Chargers game...That was just embaressing. I dont believe in the NFL fix but they did make me question my faith with that f*** up.
The NFL officiating has been a joke all season long...why should today be special?
Final thought as I am spamming now...
Great job once again this week Rams. God Damn! God Damn! God damn!
This has been one of the most depressing seasons ever for me as a Ram fan. True, I went through 90-98 without winning as many as 7 games but I was younger and Im getting cranky in my old age. Sick and tired of being sick and tired
Good thing that , aside from the pathetic zebras, its been a pretty entertaining NFL season overall or Id be tossing flat screens around the house.

I thought Chris Collinsworth did a good job showing that it was a TD, though. He showed that the ball was barely, but clearly, over the goal line at the time of the catch. I imagine the booth refs saw the same thing and felt it was enough to overturn the call. I can see why the refs made the original call as in real time it seemed like the receiver did not have the ball over the line.XXXIV wrote:We all see what we want to see...Brando70 wrote:See, I thought that Steelers TD looked like a TD on replay. .
That however is not the function of instant replay review. To take us from one one controversy to the next. The concept of indisputable evidence seems to have been buried somewhere.
As for the Cardinals, getting killed at home by a very average Vikings team doesn't bode well for their hopes. They are built more for success in Madden than the real NFL.

You should try being a Cleveland fan. I was 9 yrs old when a Cleveland team last won a title in 1964. Your not old, just a little cranky. I'm oldXXXIV wrote:Final thought as I am spamming now...![]()

While the Bears likely won't make the playoffs yesterday was a sweet day for me because I racked in close to $300 in bets with Packer fans.
I got in so many arguments when the whole Favre thing was going on about how the Pack wouldn't even make the playoffs I started making bets with a bunch of friends and now I just need them to pay up.
Of course never in my wildest dreams did I imagine the Packers would end up with a losing record, I can only imagine what the climate must be like up in Greenbay today. I have to think it's not fun up there for management, when you run a hall of famer out of town after being one step from the Superbowl and then go to a losing record.

Guess it depends on your definition of playing well. If good stats are what you are basing it on then yes he has played decent. But the league is littered with QB's who had good stats but have never won anything, I like to call that intangibles.
I haven't watched enough Pack games to say for sure, but I don't recall seeing a lot of highlights where he pulled out the game or made big plays. Again I could be wrong
Regardless my point isn't that one guy is responsible because he is clearly not, the point is if you're the guys responsible for sending a hall of famer packing, you better hit a home run. A losing season is called a swing and miss in my book.

"NFL backs ruling on Steelers' winning touchdown"
"The NFL is backing referee Walt Coleman's decision to overturn a call on the field and rule Santonio Holmes' catch a touchdown that gave the Steelers a 13-9 victory at Baltimore yesterday.
Coleman's officiating crew ruled that Holmes did not get into the end zone when he caught Ben Roethlisberger's pass from the Ravens' four with 43 seconds left. However, after viewing it on replay, Coleman overturned the call and signaled a touchdown.
"Walt Coleman determined via high-def video review that the receiver had possession and two feet down with the ball in the goal line, meaning it broke the plane,'' an NFL spokesman said via e-mail.
The spokesman said Mike Pereira, the NFL's vice president of officiating, backed the Coleman ruling after replay.
Coleman explained after the game that Holmes "had two feet down and completed the catch with control of the ball breaking the plane of the goal line."

On a related note, I think it's interesting that the ball has to cross the plane of the goal line, and that it doesn't matter if the player's feet are in the end zone, for a play like this, whereas on a play on the sideline, it doesn't matter if the ball is over the out of bounds mark, so long as the player's feet are both in the end zone.

The even more interesting rule is the one where the running back is running down the sideline and he doesn't need to get the ball inside of the pylon, just his feet, hand, whatever. The goal line apparently extends out of bounds, as long as a part of you doesn't touch down out of bounds first. That one is the most ridiculous.GTHobbes wrote:On a related note, I think it's interesting that the ball has to cross the plane of the goal line, and that it doesn't matter if the player's feet are in the end zone, for a play like this, whereas on a play on the sideline, it doesn't matter if the ball is over the out of bounds mark, so long as the player's feet are both in the end zone.
I've watched every Packer game this year and the defense is the reason the Packers have a losing record. Rodgers gave the the lead in 7 gameThe Packers defense wasn't very good this year. They had too many key injuries. Without Cullen Jenkins on the inside. They got out-worked in run-defense, and with the workhorse backs like Peterson and Forte in this division they had to play beter and didn't.Danimal wrote:Guess it depends on your definition of playing well. Aaron Rodgers is having a pretty nice season...92 QB rating, 3000+ yards, 22 TDs, and 11 ints. Compare this to Brett's 86.5 rating, 21 touchdowns and 17 ints and I don't think the Packers would be doing too much better with Favre considering the way the defense has collapsed over the last 6 weeks. If the Packers had brought back Favre, Rodgers wouldn’t have re-signed. He would have looked for an opportunity elsewhere, especially when Favre inevitably started his whole retirement dance the following summer. So, removing the names for a second, which QB would you rather have?
QB1 – 39 years-old, 90.4 QB rating, 20 TD, 14 INT
QB2 – 25 years-old, 91.2 QB rating, 20 TD, 10 INT + a second-round pick
As a Packer fan, I'll take OB2.

The bottom line is that the Packers can’t stop the run to save their lives and that has absolutely nothing to do with Aaron Rodgers. It’s a testament to his play that they even have 5 wins. Rodgers has shown comeback ability this year. Minnesota,Carolina,Tampa Bay all ended with defensive breakdowns in the last minutes.

All that being said a sweep of the Bears would make this season a little better to take. If Forte plays, the Bears win. If not,it will be close.
GO PACK!!!

I think that was a rule change this year, the whole "goal line extends around the world" deal. Now it's between the pylons. I think I heard in a few games week one. Not sure as I was probably boozin' while watching...dbdynsty25 wrote:The even more interesting rule is the one where the running back is running down the sideline and he doesn't need to get the ball inside of the pylon, just his feet, hand, whatever.
