ALL-STAR ENCORE (every band member eventually came on stage): Most People Are DJs / Look Out Cleveland (cover from the Band) / Let There Be Rock / Killer Parties
Last night's show was epic. I'll definitely be looking for a torrent of the show.

Damn, Badger, you weren't kidding. That's one of the better-sounding boots I've grabbed in a long time.Badger_Fan wrote:You'll enjoy the shows PK. The sound quality is very good for a non-SB taping. And you'll particularly enjoy "Let There Be Rock" during the Hold Steady encore with all members of both bands on stage.
Most taped shows either have too much bass or not enough, resulting in either muffled or tinny sound.
The taping of this show has very good balance for a boot. Thanks again for the tip!
Take care,
PK

Unrelated to all the Drive-By Truckers love (which I share - not a fan of the other guys though), I rarely warm to hip-hop these days but am really liking the debut from The Knux, Remind Me In 3 Days. Inventive and varied in sound (and, for the most part, decent rhymes to boot), these brothers show some real promise.
I think my album of the year is Lambchop's OH (Ohio); it is at least the best thing they've done since the Nixon and Is A Woman back-to-back masterpieces to start the decade.

So jealous you went to this show, but thanks for the tip on the recording. I'll have to check it out.Badger_Fan wrote:You'll enjoy the shows PK. The sound quality is very good for a non-SB taping. Listened to the new Guns 'n' f-ing Roses disc twice through today.
It really is more of an Axl solo album than true GNR. Not bad, but nothing that needed to take a decade and a half to come up with. A little on the mellow side, which I've come to expect that from my favorite bands of the 80s. They are all getting old, and I no longer expect the same energy and edge that they had 15 years ago.
I can't put my finger on it yet, but I feel a bit of a 70s vibe to a lot of the songs.

I gave "Chinese Democracy" a spin last night, too, and it's OK. Just OK.
It's about what you'd expect from the schizophrenic W. Axl Rose: A couple of songs are killer, a handful are ordinary and a couple are absolutely horrible. Some very good guitar licks on this record, but the entire record is WAY overproduced. It makes the "Use Your Illusion" albums sound like "The Basement Tapes" or Neil Young's "Ragged Glory."
Certainly not the return of G 'N R to its lofty heights -- did anyone expect that, anyways? -- but not terrible.
I would pay three figures to see a proper G 'N R reunion show, though. Still one of my favorite bands of all time.
Take care,
PK

I saw GNR during the UYI Tour in '91 at The Trop in St. Pete.
Awesome concert with Sound Garden as the opening act.
I heard a couple of tunes from Chinese Democracy. It's not the old GNR and I wasn't expecting that since Axel is the original member left. They've lost their attitude and Rose is 15 years older and his voice is not what it use to be.

I'm not much of an Axel fan, but I gave it a listen. The amount of 'Axel vocal layering' going on is ridiculous on this record. Some of those tracks sound like 25 vocal takes piled on top of each other. If there's no slash, it's a 'gnr' album in the loosest sense... Anywhoo, I always thought Izzy was coolest 'gun'.

Well, it is better than The Spagetti Incident. But it sounds so tame. "Shackler's Revenge" sounds like Nickelback if they didn't wax their balls. Yeah, it's a little more hard core, but it's still Nickelback's balls.
When I listened to Appetite and even the wildly uneven Use Your Illusion albums, they both had songs that grabbed me by the throat on the first listen. Velvet Revolver's "Slither" did that, even if the rest of the album never approached that sleazy high. Chinese Democracy doesn't have any moments like that for me. "Street of Dreams" is a pretty good piano-driven song in the mold of "Yesterdays" from Illusion II, and "Madagascar" is good until it made the right turn at Albequerque about halfway through. Overall, though, I found myself getting bored or irritated with most of the songs.
It's a shame, because despite the crazy ego excess of Axl, I really hoped this album would be good. The world could use another great GnR record, even if it's only from one of them.

Anybody else try Grooveshark, one of the new music-social media mashups? This thing is BAD-ASS: I like it WAY better than last.fm or any other music-social mish-mash I've tried.

The Grammy nominations were released today, and Kings of Leon (3 noms!), My Morning Jacket, Eddie Vedder, Robert Plant & Allison Krauss, Beck, Radiohead, Neil Young, and even AC/DC are all up for awards. I've never had this many personal favorites up for a Grammy before...guess I'll have to actually watch this year. Good job, Academy!

It's that time of year for the "Who gives a rats ass" file! From my blog:
10. REM - Accelerate (Amazing what can happen when Peter Buck gives a sh*t again. Man Sized Wreath & Living Well are the best songs they’ve written in 8 years.)
9. Silver Jews - Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea (Berman at his most relaxed, for better or worse. Might be time to get Malkmus on the phone...)
8. Steve Malkmus – Real Emotional Trash (Malkmus at his most “jammy”, for better or worse. Might be time to get Spiral on the phone…)
7. Of Montreal - Skeletal Lamping (Not quite the Bi-Sexual "Smile" it tries to be, but it's not for an uncomfortable lack of trying.)
6. MGMT - Oracular Spectacular (Nice sense of humor – electric-y, rock-y, stone-y, and they make it on the Hills on a regular basis - wink wink.)
5. Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend (These guys seem to get less & less cool by the minute, but the album was a good one to argue about.)
4. Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes (Yeah, they sound like My Morning Jacket, they sound like 70’s-Beach Boys. I got over it.)
3. Cut Copy – In Ghost Colours (Anytime you hear “dance music, BUT they also play GUITARS!!” there’s an instant gag reflex. This works, really works, go figure – crazy aussies.)
2. My Morning Jacket - Evil Urges (I can't help it. Much like Wilco's 'head scratcher' last year, I can't stop listening to this damn thing. It's funny that my 2nd favorite album of the year has the most annoying track ever - u know what it is...)
1. Deerhunter - Microcastle (Spacey, Stoney, Reverb'd to all hell, catchy, difficult, good times. If I was a college kid, this would be the band to make me buy a guitar. The next record will be their true breakout and/or start a turf war with Deerhoof fans. Can't wait)

I don't what's wrong with Vamp Weekend. They haven't turned into The Killers or Coldplay.
The Killer's get my 2009 "Hey we're trying to be Oasis vote." f*** what happened after hot fuss.
Fleet Foxes is good sometimes too mellow.

Vampire Weekend is a really good album. Too much hipster doofus hating on those guys, which almost always happens when a young, talented group takes off right away (see The Strokes).
I like that Fleet Foxes record a lot, but think that Band of Horses does a slightly better job of mining the Americana ground.
My Morning Jacket left me cold. I applaud their sense of adventure, but they reached a point where they didn't sound like themselves so much that it was almost like listening to another group.
I'd have to go with Bon Iver's For Emma, For Ever Ago as my record of the year because it's so original, intimate, and creative. That slightly edges out The Hold Steady's Stay Positive which, while again not terribly original, rocks my face off.
