MMJ is the 2nd best live band in the old U.S. of A. (current Wilco lineup=1). Anyway, MMJ was great & brought the 'rock'. Jim James is crazy. He did more than one song wearing a cape??? J.James' voice sounds like it's coming from another planet... Also, no opener, just MMJ is it's 3 hour glory. Here's the setlist (Greek Theatre, L.A.):

-anytime
-i'm amazed
-way he sings
-two halves
-thank you, too
-sec walkin
-i will sing you songs
-what a wonderful man

Got my mitts on the new Mogwai album tonight. I'm no expert on their earlier work, but "The Hawk Is Howling" is is a rare record for me -- fantastic from the very first listen from start to finish. I can't think of a single throwaway track.

I'm liking the new Mogwai as well, but I do wish it had some lyrics for some if not all of the songs. I'll need to give it a few more listens before I know whether I like it as much as some of their past work like Happy Songs for Happy People. Good week for new music, between this and the Kings.

PK - I might accidentally send a compilation of all of their previous works your way.

It's also worth getting your paws on the Mogwai soundtrack for that film about Zinedine Zidane (21st century hero, or whatever it's called) - tis v good, but the 32 minute final track often gets missed off when I play it.

From my limited exposure to Mogwai, I understand that beautiful isn't a word often used to describe their tunes, but I'll be f*cked if "Thank You Space Expert" off their new record isn't one of the most gorgeous tunes I've heard in a long while.

It's a goosebump special every time I hear it.

What an awesome show last night. WOW. They played for 2 hours straight...almost the entire new album (which is phenomenal by the way). If you hip hop fans want to see a good show...see if they are coming to your area. They definitely had the crowd rockin' last night.

Anyone who was a fan of the whole Wax Trax scene of the late 80's & early 90's, I just finished reading Chris Connelly's Book "Concrete, Bulletproof, Invisible and Fried: My Life As A Revolting Cock". It's a blast & a great snapshot of the era. And yes, Jourgenson was the kook-ass, coked-up, nut job I always thought he was...

It took a few listens, like most cds for me do, but I'm really liking the new Ryan Adams cd, Cardinology. Fall's the perfect time to be listening to his music...if you liked Gold, Cold Roses, etc., I'm pretty sure you'll like this one, too.

Saw "The Who" (term used loosely) last night (free ticket). It was about what I figured. It was cool to see Townsend in-person, and Daltry was kinda like a drunk uncle at a wedding. Anyway, I was surprised at the younger crow overall. Best song of the night: The Seeker, worst song: My Generation (cringe-worthy).

Note to anyone in the L.A.-area, that Nokia Live venue is pretty amazing (my 1st time)..

Just discovered Coheed & Cambria this week. Where the h@ll have they been hiding for the past few years?!?! It's ahrd to categorize them since they blend and changes styles so often, but it is definitely somewhere in the hard rock realm.

I can hear influences of older bands like Rush, Genesis, and Kansas all over the place, but blended with a current sound. So far I've been blown over by them after listening to their 2 most recent albums this past week.

I love discovering bands that don't immediately fit into a certain genre and also have some depth to them. These kinds of joyous discoveries are few and far between lately. C&C definitely have their own style, and it's one I love.

Just discovered Pendulum this week. I'm a sucker for "heavy" electronic music with a hook, and these guys deliver. I absolutely love their latest CD, In Silico. Remind of a cross between Prodigy, Crystal Method and Muse.

I've never heard of them but invoking the names of those 3 bands has me checking them out right now.

And C&C rocks Matt. I've been listening to them for a couple years now. They're in both Rockband games too.

I really like the IV album (can't remember the long title). They have a nice blend of prog, metal, and pop/punk (in the hooks of some of the songs). Haven't pulled the trigger on the last one they did so I'll have to check it out.

It's rare that a record grabs me from the first listen, but "Who Killed Harry Houdini?" by I'm From Barcelona gripped me from the opening track.

A really nice record.

But the joy of that record is balanced by my disappointment with "Black Ice," the new release from AC/DC. Sure, AC/DC never has been known for complex chord changes and intricate riffs, but this record is paint-by-numbers riffage, even by AC/DC standards.

Wal-Mart was a fitting place for this record to make its exclusive debut. It's mass-market, discount AC/DC.

I've been listening to the new Deerhunter record during some traveling this week & I think it's slowly revealing itself to be genius. (just a hunch)

C&C final cut is an amazing song and hereing it on "Matt Pinfield plays what he wants"it was live and it blew me away.

DeerHoof i've only heard whatever they play on LOC i really like some of them but some are really out there, jury is still out.

Still think The Go Team is one of my Favorite finds from Left of center.

Deerhoof's live shows supposedly blow away any of their recorded works. If you're digging the latest record, you should keep an eye for them on tour (touring now). Deerhoof's "Runner Four" is pretty amazing-sounding record. The entire thing was recorded on a barely functioning Mac running a 'free demo' version of pro tools (they couldn't afford the full version). It sounds better and 'cooler' than most big studio records.
