OT: Dead Space
Haven't heard anybody talking about this one even it got very good reviews online. I picked it up this afternoon and started playing around with the first couple missions and it is pretty good for a horror/space type 3rd person shooter. I've heard comparisons to Resident Evil in space and it has that sort of feel but it is definitely its own beast and there are a few twists that have keep me pretty enthralled since I started. Blowing the limbs off of the bad guys and then having them crawl towards you using their remaining appendages is hilarious and it adds to teh suspense and scariness cuase you never quite know if that last guy isn't going to come back to life and getcha. It is very linear but that is fine as this isn't a "sandbox" style game anyway and I actually like that fact that I'm being directed which way to go as it feels more like an interactive scary movie that a real button mashing/skill game. I have a feeling the difficultly is about to be kicked up a notch though:)
Check it out if you're into these kind of games and I'm sure you won't be disappointed (especially with the way it looks, incredible!)
OK, now for some FIFA:)

Keep the impressions coming. I know Scoop and myself were very interested in this one. I agree, there is nothing wrong with "linear". Sometimes I prefer some type of direction rather than being able to freely wander around for hours looking for the next place to go.macsomjrr wrote:Haven't heard anybody talking about this one even it got very good reviews online. They did a really fantastic job with the atmosphere and feeling in this game. Lots of "OMG! OMG!" moments where you are frantically trying to fight off a bunch of monsters with all kinds of body parts hanging off of them.Spooky wrote:Thanks for the impressions. I was wondering when this was going to pop up on here. I am interested for sure.
The HUD is fantastic and helps with the immersion factor. You never need to hit the pause button to surf around your items etc... you just use your in game HUD to check stuff out and bring up your maps. Your health meter is a florescent cord on the back of the player and your ammo is clearly displayed on the weapons own HUD. No typical in game cut scenes either, you always feel like you're a part of the action on the screen although there are a few moments where you temporarily don't control your guy but its all very seamless.
I did read one review that claimed this game wasn't that scary and I totally disagree (maybe I'm a big wuss though). When the lights go out and start flickering on and off as you walk down a long corridor, well, you'll see what i mean:)
I haven't reached an anti-gravity portion yet but I'm going to try and play around a bit more before the FIFA games start tonight.
I was luke warm about this one, because horror games aren't really my cup of tea, but after watching a few videos in the last few weeks really changed my mind. There's something about the smooth style and the atmosphere that grabbed me, so now I have it coming from gamefly. It's nice to hear initial impressions are good.

Couple extra notes.
- Zero gravity is very cool. Especially when you're out in space. The sounds change, the physics change. Nothing like shooting a monster to pieces and watching the blood float out of the body in a gooey mess.
- That game starts to feel a bit like you're walking through a haunted house amusement park. There are lots of "wow that's cool" parts that you have to see. I won't spoil it but you'll be experiencing a few "unique" moments that mix up the run and gun stuff.
- I'm over two hours in and it is starting to feel a lot like an Aliens movie rather than a zombie/horror flick. Clearly there was some influence there.
- The puzzles are simple and don't detract from the game at all and it helps to mix things up a bit.

Sounds great. Do you think this game is worth one of my TRU Buy 2 Get 1 Free's? In other words, would you pay $60 for it?macsomjrr wrote:Couple extra notes.

It is absolutely worth a rental at the very least. I'm with rodster in that I'm not sure how much I'll play this after I finish it but from the reviews I've read the game is at least 12 hours + of gameplay.JackB1 wrote:

It really is a fantastic game though.

I'm only an hour in but so far the presentation is top notch and it feels like you're in a big budget sci-fi movie just like Uncharted made you feel like you were in an Indiana Jones movie.
I've pretty much only made it through the set up stage and I can't wait to see what else happens. The controls are spot on and shooting alien limbs and stomping on them never gets old. I haven't even made it to the zero gravity stuff yet and I hear that's when the game truly shines. There's a very big Alien movie vibe and that's great to me because I love those movies.
I can't wait to get more time in with this thing. Oh, and I concur with Mac that this game is scary but I only play games like this when I'm the only one awake in the house and the lights are off.

I am a patient boy.
I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait.
My time is water down a drain.

I ordered it from CircuitCity.com and got my $10 GC. Thanks for the impressions Scoop. I've played thru Uncharted several times which is rare as 99.9% of action games never get revisited. Uncharted is just like you said an Indiana Jones style movie/video game.
I may go back and replay Dead Space for achievements.

Medium fo shizzle. Things start to ramp up quick around chapter 5 or so. I think I'm around half way done at this point and I've gotta say this game is one of my recent faves to be sure. The voice acting is top notch (sci-fi standards) and the story is very encaptivating. Hopefully is doesn't get too difficult further on to where I can't finish it. That would blow.greggsand wrote:Sorry, one more thing. What difficulty is everyone playing? I started on HARD, but was DYING over & over & over & over. Thinking about starting over in MEDIUM. Thoughts????
Wanted to bump this one back up.
This game is incredibly polished and a worthy play by any fan of survival horror games or of deep space fiction.
The setting is fantastic with almost every scene outdoing the last and some terrific set pieces. The combat is entertaining with a seeming wide range of creature variation. There is weapon and gear enhancement, but not nearly enough resources to improve everything you'd like to.
With a spate of good titles recently, this one has been quite a pleasant surprise.

I just finished this game yesterday and I must say, it was fun, scary and totally satisfying. One tip, upgrade your plasma cutter, you will really need it for later in the game, do waste nodes on the suite or flamethrower, and get rid of the pulse rifle, its rubish. The story is interesting and a good twist happens toward the end, the zero G sequences were done well and not to frustrating. watch out for the regenerating monster he annyoned me when all I would shoot all limbs off, then try and stomp him to pieces, it didnt work, but you get him later in the game. all in all its a great rental game, no replay value IMHO, but to each their own, hope RE5 can be this good b/c of the co-op and MP.
