Yes, I did mean I can't complain relative to what others have gone through. I definitely expect a $400 electronic device to last longer than it has.

My reporting its death may have been premature though. Although I got the RROD five times in a row initially, after leaving it off for about an hour, I turned it back on and it worked fine. I then turned it off and on about ten more times to test it, and it booted fine each time. I opened up NCAA and just played for a couple of hours with no problems at all.

Has anybody had any success in having their 360 work long term after getting the RROD? Or is it inevitable that mine is going to die again, this time for good?

I got my first rrod in early April, then I had no problems until the other day, which happened to be around 3 1/2 months, ymmv.

Well, I seen on page 8 or 9 something about the towel trick. I watched youtube and decided what do I have to lose. Before that, I called M$, gave them my serial # and found out to my surprise that I hadn't registered my xbox. Anyways the tech tells me that I can still get a free repair, but I have to provide my own coffin and they emailed me some mailing instructions.

So I do the towel trick and voila, it works again. But deep down in my heart of hearts I know that this is only temporary and will die once again. I have 30 days to send it in for the free repair, so thats a good thing. Hello NCAA 09, unless it crashes again.

I just got mine back from repair today. It took exactly 13 days from the time I called in to get the coffin to get it back repaired. Pretty fast.

Thanks, that isn't bad at all. I haven't had the RROD since Saturday though, so I guess I'll just hope my 360 is okay. Before NCAA released I wouldn't have any problem being without my 360 for a couple of weeks. Now though, even a few days would be torture. :)

My launch 360's resurrection was short lived, and I had to end up sending it in last week. The good news is that it is only going to be about a one week turnaround, as MS just shipped it back today despite receiving it only yesterday.

Well my replacement system from Gamestop only lasted 14 months. I lose video after a few minutes but no RROD. I'm off to Gamestop tomorrow to hopefully get a new one since it's under their replacement warranty.

My 360 is the 20GB model and all they have now are the 60GB models. So hopefully they'll exchange it with no problems.

I had the Best Buy Replacement plan & my launch 360 finally died. I took it to best buy & they let me keep my HD, gave me a $100 gift card because of the price difference between now vs. when I originally bought my 360, and the new 360 has the 60gig HD (so I have 2 HD's now). Not too shabby...

That's cool the way things turned out for you Greg. Unfortunately I live in Florida so warranties are handled differently. Keeping fingers crossed that i'll walk out with a brand new 60GB unit since I reformatted my HDD.

I have a friend whose video card just fried out on him. He didn't get the RROD so MS said it doesn't fall under the warranty. He'd have to pay somewhere around $99 to repair it. I guess I want to know if there are any other options for him?

He should of said he had a RROD, they don't check them when they come into repair. I had several friends do just that, you think some factory worker getting minimum wage in Texas is taking the time to turn on every machine.

Even if by some chance someone does check what is the worst they are going to do, send it back to you?

I'm assuming they took his information down, so should he call back and say he got the RROD they might call him on it?

Dan my 360 recently died the same way. I would lose video signal after a few minutes depending on the game. Fortunately my Gamestop warranty scored me a new 60GB unit.

I would take the advice of Danimal. Have your friend call back and say the unit is now Red Ringing. They don't check that stuff at the service center.

Well when mine died a few weeks ago it was just freezing so I called because I thought it was a dead dvd or video and they said I was out of warranty. Then I turned it on when I got my new one to copy down the Hd and it red ringed, so I called back and they are fixing it for free. My story is true, but I mean they didn't say anything to me.

...and there goes my launch system too. Can't really complain, I suppose, since many of you went through multiple systems and this was my one and only. I guess I'm also glad it went out before the 3 year warranty expired...which would have been damn soon.

I guess I should consider myself lucky.

Damn Web you really have no reason to complain as I'm on my third brand new system. Fortunately I purchased EBgames extended warranty both times at $50 a piece. So my recent exchanged unit didn't cost me anything and it was the 60GB model which appear to be much more reliable.

Too bad EB/Gamestop no longer offers extended warranties for the 360.

The timings not bad either since Microsoft has their stuff together lately when it comes to turnaround time. My box broke about a month ago and I received a new one exactly two weeks from the day it broke, with Labor day weekend thrown in there.

According to Microsoft, my 360 was repaired a week ago today and shipped ('Device Shipped to Customer') on the same day. UPS still only has the 'Billing information received' status showing.

While the overall time my box has been gone is still not too bad, I'm a little concerned that it has been in it's current status (MS saying they shipped it, UPS saying they haven't yet received it) for eight days, now.

Anyone have a similar stay in this status?

I got my launch one turned around in just 8 days. I sent it out on a Monday and had it the following Thursday, so i would be concerned with that status. The good news is they sent me a brand new one with what has to be the latest chipset based on the manufacture date of August. The thing is quiet and cool, it performs better then the new 60 gig I bought.

Is that confirmed? The two times mine failed, I got back a refurb both times. Have you confirmed either by looking through the grille or by some other physical change (like HDMI vs. non-HDMI)?

Thanks Dan.

So, I called them over lunch and after a brief wait while I transferred to a supervisor, they came to the inclusion that I indeed should have received my console by now. They are opening an 'investigation,' with a first callback to me supposedly occurring tomorrow evening...

*sigh*

So, anyone have an experience with a lost console investigation?

I can only hope that this is resolved before 'Texas Flood' and/or the 20 free RB2 songs are released...I really don't need two 360s...

As long as it doesn't show as "delivered" Microsoft will send you a new console. A buddy of mine had his lost in transit somewhere, and they just resent him a new console when UPS couldn't tell them where it was.

In my case UPS shows that they haven't received a package from MS, so that would be great.

Do you know how long things were tied up in 'investigation' for your buddy, Db?

Only a couple days for UPS.

In fact, with FedEx...I got a package stolen from in front of my house...they did an investigation, worked with Circuit City, and they gave me the option of another camera or my money back. So as long as no one signs for it, you should be good as they can't prove that they delivered it to your place. The whole thing took two days.

I'm a little confused as to which model they sent you? To my knowledge the 60GB systems started showing up this August. My dead 20GB 360 I bought at Gamestop was replaced with the 60GB system which also was manufactured in August.

The rumored Jasper chipset is supposed to arrive in 2009.
