2 on 2 sounds outstanding to me, and it does get me excited. PES head to head is for my money far better than any other game I play, and back when I had others in my house to play alongside, 2 on 2 was the absolute best. Even with FIFA's 10 on 10, I'm sure I will have more fun with PES 2 on 2 from just a mechanical point of view, with far fewer basic frustrations.
This is, of course, assuming it actually functions online and smoothly, and that 4p allows 'any.'
Look, Im sure FIFA will be crazy fun with the big group, but nevertheless the fundamentals of PES are so much stronger that if the online is smooth and stable, I will likely enjoy 2 on 2 in that game even more from a pure gameplay perspective. 2 on 2 where all are 'any' meets my minimum standard of 'true multiplayer sports game.'

That's not a bet I'm willing to make for the price of the game. LOL

None taken. Given the number of games that we played it seems that quite a few of us disagree with your conclusions, though. I particularly don't think that we always played one way, especially given the variety that came from different combinations of players.
Now NHL is another story...

For me OTP is just another mode in a game. I'm sure 2-on-2 can be fun, I just mean we won't be seeing the mass turnouts and enthusiasm for it.
I think soccer does work better for OTP though because of the more deliberate nature of the game and you have more time to react to the actions of your teammates. That can be tough in NHL 09.
The demo still has the parry the ball to opposing team for a tap in up front and center.
I was expecting a little more from pes this year with what they where saying about how they mailed it in last year.
Doesnt seem that much of a leap to me. But i must admit, going back to the Fifa demo after playing this makes the lag in controls of fifa realy stand out to the point of being realy annoying again.
With the lack of rosters update, I may be inclined to get he PS3 version this year and only if the online play is at least decent. I already mentioned that I wasn't that pleased with the demo, not that it plays a bad game of soccer but after all these years, I expected the same push that at least EA put forward lately.
Being conservative, I would estimate that EA would have a least twice as many people working on FIFA than Konami does on PES. That doesn't excuse the obvious laziness Konami exhibits over certain issues, such as up to date transfers, but it's something to keep in mind when you compare the progress of FIFA and PES.
Actually, there's speculation that Konami are limited in their licensing agreements from having fully up to date transfers. The somewhat sickening alternative is that they are just too damn lazy to get the transfers up to date to September 1st, even though their game costs the same price as FIFA and comes out two weeks later.
It's a shame getting proper answers out of Seabass on these types of nitty gritty issues seems to be impossible. I dearly would love to ask him why he decided to remove Date and Difficulty information from replay saves, crippling the popular PESFan Goal of the Month competitions in the process.
Soccer is at this point the only sport where I still end up buying both of the major games on the market. Last year I played a ton more FIFA (except on the PSP, where Konami put out their best footie game in several years), and while I'll buy both, I expect this year will probably be the same.
Yeah along with Sean my favorite sport is Football so PES 2009 is a lock. I loved the demo and i'm looking forward to the full game. I may get FIFA 09 although it seems too much like FIFA 08 which I still have. If I can find it during next weeks TRU sale i'll pick that up as well.
Konami plans to update Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 with new licensed teams and current transfer data in early November. The publisher's announcement suggests it applies to 360, PS3 and PC versions.
Spanish sides Athletico Madrid, Sevilla, Racing Santander and Valladolid join the list of licensed teams, which already includes Liverpool and Manchester United from the English Premier League.
The patch will also update kits and squads for many teams in the game, hopefully putting Berbatov on Man United's books and reinstalling Shevchenko away from Chelsea, to pick on the most noticeable ones.
Konami also plans to add 12 more teams to the licensed UEFA Champions League mode (including Marseille, Juventus and Basel) and add proper Champions League kits and kit markings to give the whole thing a greater air of authenticity.
