this game is looking hot. That 5 on 5 online mode sounds very interesting and has lots of potential, especially with the rating system to weed out the ball hogs.

The new animations add-on during the year sounds pretty sweet.

The 2K Insider guy does frighten me a bit. I do like the sound of NBA Live's 365 better.

I'm interested in the 5 vs. 5 mode but this is the first time 2K is doing it and their online support for Playstation, going back to PS2, is inconsistent.

So I'll wait to see if their networking code is up to snuff first.

Maybe they will have better game-launching features than EA's OTP stuff, especially the ability to boot certain players at any time and launch without waiting for the counter to go down.

Sounds interesting:

2K Sports Gets More Real with Living Rosters in NBA® 2K9

Fans will receive the most up-to-date player attributes, player tendencies, and unlockable animations

September 22, 2008 – 2K Sports today announced details on Living Rosters, an exciting new innovative online feature for this season’s highly anticipated basketball title, NBA 2K9. Living Rosters will ensure dedicated fans are playing with the most up-to-date and complete basketball experience ever available in the NBA 2K franchise. In addition to delivering constant updates to player ratings and player tendencies, Living Rosters will also offer exclusive access to unlockable animation packages for players in the game. When a player starts to heat up and takes his game to the next level on the real courts, new animation packages will unlock for that player in the video game. As the NBA season progresses, so will NBA 2K9, as players will have the ability to pull off new moves never seen before in the video game, adapt their offensive and defensive rotations, and shift starting lineups as they occur. If it happens during the regular NBA season, it will happen in NBA 2K9 thanks to Living Rosters.

When the Living Rosters feature is activated and a gamer signs in online, the game automatically checks for Living Roster updates in order to download the latest real-life player information in a seamless process behind the scenes. Gamers will have an option to either have Living Rosters automatically update their in-game roster information, or they can choose to download new roster data manually.

Once Living Rosters has successfully completed an update, NBA 2K9 fans can then review the different player and gameplay updates from the NBA 2K Insider – a real person working behind the scenes, pouring over the stats and spreadsheets, and who is ultimately responsible for the content and accuracy of the Living Rosters updates. However, the Insider’s job is much more than just crunching numbers - they will interact with the community and listen to roster update suggestions to determine what the fans really want in each update. The NBA 2K Insider’s analysis and commentary will be available in-game and on the 2K Sports website, www.2ksports.com.

NBA 2K9 is the latest edition of NBA 2K, the series that has been the #1 rated NBA simulation for seven years in a row* and is back for its 10th season. NBA 2K9 is the premier basketball game for serious players, and will deliver the most realistic and feature-rich simulation experience ever available in the NBA 2K franchise – from gameplay and graphics to presentation and online features. NBA 2K9 is rated E for Everyone by the ESRB and will be available on October 7 for Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and PLAYSTATION®3 and PlayStation®2 computer entertainment systems. As I mentioned in the PSN thread...the 360 version of the game looks quite a bit better. They did a better job with the jaggies. The downside, is there is a little more slowdown during cut scenes. I'm sure the camera angle may have something to do with it too.

Holy smokes. Just played the 360 demo and I'm blown away by the improvements they've made over 2K8. This is probably one of the most realistic looking sports game I've ever played. The mannerisms of the players, the multitude of crowd animations (take note FIFA!), the arena announcer, the reflections off of the court (maybe a bit too much). The gameplay is typical 2K basketball action though which isn't a bad thing but it may be too much of the same for some. I'm really excited about getting this game after playing that demo.

5 on 5 sounds great but you know you'll end up with a "gimme the ball so I can try to dunk every time we move the ball up court" players on the team.

If playing online is anything like last year, it'll be more "gimme the ball so I can take a 30 foot 3-pointer". Still, it should be a blast.

In retrospect I wonder if the fact that I'm playing this years version on my new LCD TV in 1080p (versus a RPTV 27" in 480p) is clouding my judgement of this game a bit. It just looks so awesome!

I downloaded the demo...or what I thought was the 2k9 demo. I didn't think it was 2k8.

Anyway, no too bad but the difficulty must have been on easy. I think basketball needs to move towards dynamic collisions, however.

That camera angle is not my fav to give it a true test run, but I thought the game itself was pretty nifty. It's all about the online for me though.

As many of you may know, I haven't loved a hoops game since. . . .Double Dribble. I'm not kidding. Although I have enjoyed some of the past 2K pro and college games.

So I'm tempted. The OTP thing really has me intrigued, though I do wish they had set up a club type system (party system for matchmaking, you know). But on the other hand, getting four or five of us in a game against randoms could give us a nice teamwork advantage.

Anyhow, i'm curious to hear any feedback especially about the OTP in the game. Does it work at all or is it crazy laggy? When there are fewer than 5 guys, can someone be an 'any?' Is defense fun, or even possible or is it a dunk-fest in OTP?

I loved last years game. Most hoops gaming I had done in a long time.

With that, I am waiting to see if this years is that big of a change and am looking forward to everyone's impressions.

My only concern from playing the demo is that some of the players get out of position ala CHoops 2K6 (Xbox1) where i'll find the PG for some reason playing Center. Sometimes it corrects itself but i've seen other times where it doesn't.

They do have the lock-on D but I'd only describe as "OK" in terms of making defense any fun. I'm still a bit confused as to how the little radar icon that comes up on the defender correlates with the defenders stats. It looks like it is telling you your defensive positioning relative to the offensive player but I'm not sure how that factors into the actual gameplay on defense. If I play further off the ball according to teh radar does that mean I'll be better able to defend against a drive to the hoop but worse off against a pull-up jumper? From the demo I'm not seeing a massive difference between pressuring guys and them missing shots but it is just the demo and its a cpu opponent versus human.

Between NBA, NHL and FIFA I think we'll have our OTP hands full this winter;)

I'm still getting both. To me NBA 2K9 plays like real basketball whereas Live 09 is just plain fun and actually very good this year.
