I could see Dempster getting the game 1 start as he's been brilliant and damn near unbeatable at Wrigley this year, followed by Lilly and then Big Z in the first road game as he's been decent on the road.

Rays clinching a playoff spot is no fluke. They've been on top of the division for awhile, injuries and all they battled the Jays, Yankees and Redsox with positive results all year long. It's just too bad nobody cares in TPA though.

I am actually disgusted with the umpiring in the Sox/Twins series in favor of the Twins. It could not be any more obvious and atrocious. Every game has been tainted with terrible calls. I am so pissed right now.

Damn, what a night to have DTV baseball package...Mets come back in spite of themselves to pull out a win..switch over to the Brewers-Bucs in time to watch Ryan Braun hit a grand salome walk off..then move over to see the Pale hosers spit up a 6 run lead to the Twinks, all in sparkling HD, now its time to see if the Beavers can hold that 7 point lead over USC,and ruin that run for the BCS. Good sh!t,and I got the day off tommorrow, and the wife's out of town. Think I'll have another Capt & coke.

It's not pitiful...it's awesome! As bad as the Braves are, it's good to know the Mets won't be playing October either. Hell, the Braves even tried to help the Mets last weekend by kicking the Phillies ass a few times. But alas, the don't know how to play games in September in New York.

This is gonna be the greatest playoffs yet...no teams from New York, AT ALL.

Well the Mets blamed last years collapse on Willie Randolph. Who's turn is it this year? Go Marlins.

The best part of the Mets loss today was that after they lost, the PA announcer reminded everyone to stick around for a "salute to Shea Stadium"... LOL

What, a team that doesn't win the world series? It's a good bet.

YES! The Brewers are in the playoffs. I would have liked a division title, but after 26 years I'm not going to be picky.

I hope they go all the way, but realistically I expect them to have trouble just getting by the first series with Philly. Sheets is likely done for year. The bullpen is shaky. They rely too much on home runs to win games. I have a hard time seeing them winning 3 series with the way they are so streaky, which is largely due to their offense.

I'm just happy they made it. Each game from here on out is just a bonus. :)

You have basically the same odds as every othe team in the post-season.

Regular season = best team wins

Post-season = hottest team wins/crap shoot

Been that way for 100 years. It's not going to change now. It should be sobering to Cubs/Angels fans and encouraging to some of the others.

Go Tigers!!!

Dude, I'm a Cub fan. Karma has had her way with me for decades. It wouldn't be anything new :)

And I can't help it. I don't go for this watered-down "let's root for the city" fandom. I spilled blood, sweat and tears over the Cubs-Sox schism for my entire childhood. I'm not going to toss away that investment just to be more adult...plus it's more fun this way LOL

Actually, I want the Sox in the playoffs, only because a Cubs-White Sox series would be awesome.

I like the Cubs chances to make it to the Series. The playoffs are a different beast, but their rotation is definitely the best in the NL, and they have highest scoring offense of any playoff team. Anything can happen in the playoffs, as Rob said, but I feel more confident in this team than in the 2003 team.

Spoken like someone who can sit back and enjoy the carnage from afar. :)

That would be civic armageddon.

It'll be interesting to see how the Tigers play today. When they were in Cleveland a week ago they looked like a team that had already packed it in for the year. I can't imagine they're too thrilled to be prolonging their season one more day. Probably had to cancel some high-priced tee times.

Yep. If we sufficiently weaken ourselves you could help yourselves to the restaurants, museums, clubs and culture which are so severly lacking north of the border :)

Although knocking a rival out of the playoff picture should be a good one-day motivator. Personally, I hope they do it.

On another note, a good wrap up article on ESPN:

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/s ... id=3611226

My favourites: Mark Redman giving up 10 earned runs in the first inning, then not only was left in the game but pitched 5 more one-hit innings! Also, CC being tied for first in shutouts in BOTH leagues? Wow.

My dad grew up in downstate Illinois as a Cardinals fan. When he moved to the city he had no allegiance to either baseball team so when my brother and I were young he would take us to see both teams. I had no idea growing up that you shouldn't like both teams and that you had to pick one over the other. I still don't understand that, but whatever.

Now all I get from Cub fans or Sox fans is that I'm not a real fan because I like both teams. Well they can suck it because as a fan of both teams I've had to endure twice the pain that they have with both teams consistently putting crap on the field for most of my life. I don't want to see an all-Chicago World Series because I hate it when they play each other. I never pay attention when they do and pretty much hope for a series split each year. I used to like the old Crosstown Classic exhibition game because it was fun and didn't count.

So far this has been the greatest regular season for me as a baseball fan with the Cubs winning the division and the Sox taking it down to the last game of the season. I've already witnessed a first in the Cubs going to the playoffs in consecutive years. I'm 36 and that has never happened. If the Sox can win today and again tomorrow another first will happen; the Cubs and the Sox will make the playoffs in the same year. Unthought of here in Chicago. I've seen the Bears, the Sox, and the Bulls win championships in my life and now I want to see the Cubs and Blackhawks do it. Hell, I've even seen the Sting, Wolves, and Fire win.

In any event it has been one helluva regular season and it's a great time to be a fan of Chicago teams with the Bears playing better than the press expected, the Cubs in the playoffs, the Sox in control of their playoff destiny, and the Blackhawks return to glory.

Well you came from impoverished circumstances and are fortunate to be a Chicago fan at all :)

I've never said that one couldn't be a fan of both. I just don't subscribe to the idea that one should be. Tribalism is half the fun of sports. LOL
