New Mogwai album out next week, as well as My Bloody Valentine reissues....art-drone rock/noise terror ahoy !!
"The players come from all over the world, the money from deep underneath the Persian Gulf, but, as another, older City poster campaign put it, this is their city. They may now exist in the global spotlight, but they intend to keep it that way."
Thanks for this...I didn't even know Mogwai had a new one coming out. Damn, with new releases from Kings of Leon, Mogwai and Dead Confederate, September is shaping up to be a helluva good month for music.davet010 wrote:New Mogwai album out next week, as well as My Bloody Valentine reissues....art-drone rock/noise terror ahoy !!

Do you mean how will MVB be live? There are some good (and bad) quality youtube videos. I'm going to see them on Oct 1st (guest list!). Should be something...Brando70 wrote:The halls of Pitchfork Media will be damp with splooge.davet010 wrote:New Mogwai album out next week, as well as My Bloody Valentine reissues....art-drone rock/noise terror ahoy !!
Seriously, I'll be curious how MBV lives up to the expectations.
Oops, I completely misread Dave's post -- I thought there was a new MBV album coming out!greggsand wrote:Do you mean how will MVB be live? There are some good (and bad) quality youtube videos. If you ain't seen them before, Gregg, I would seriously take some decent earplugs with you, they can be incredibly loud.greggsand wrote:Do you mean how will MVB be live? When they played in London a while back, they were handing them out on the door.

I saw them back in '92 with Dinosaur Jr., and to this day, hundreds of shows later, it is still the loudest show I've ever experienced. From a blog post I once wrote:davet010 wrote:If you ain't seen them before, Gregg, I would seriously take some decent earplugs with you, they can be incredibly loud.

The volume was overwhelming, but it was a livable level of discomfort before they launched into "You Made Me Realise". For roughly fifteen minutes, pure noise berated and bludgeoned me, and the band took it up a notch every time that drumroll hit - the sound would peal downward, like it was sucked into a vortex created by the rapid-fire drums, then scream upward, seemingly louder and both angry and gleeful at it's escape. After the show my head was perfectly clear - I was deafened but renewed, a slate wiped of all thoughts and worries. My body, however, was broken; my joints ached, my back screamed at me as I climbed into my car, my kidneys defined by their throbbing outlines in the small of my back.

After some more time with Death Magnetic I really like it. It's not their best, but it is far from their worst. I'd place it around Justice & and the Black album.
Favorite track - All Nightmare Long
Least favorite - Unforgiven III, My Apocalypse. Actually these are the only two I will be removing from my playlist.

I felt a little dirty doing it, but I d/l'ed the new Kings last night (I'll still pay for it when it's released) and have been listening to it in the office all day. I'm biased because I love these guys to begin with, but I don't think there's a bad song on the album. Great addition to their already impressive catalogue.ScoopBrady wrote:I'm really digging the new Kings of Leon. Standout tracks for me are Closer, Crawl, 17, Notion, and Be Somebody. I like the radio-friendly Use Somebody as well but I know that didn't go over too big here. Rest assured that's the only song in that vain on the album. Oh, and I'm still adoring the new Metallica album as well.
This feedback is great to hear. I know some people love to bash Pitchfork & I know some people love to bash Kings of Leon, here's a nice "reeses peanut butter" moment as Pitchfork absolutely skewers the new KoL album:
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/r ... -the-night
Agree with the review or not, it is a pretty funny read. esp the lines re: caleb's lyric writing "though his band has toured the world several times over, dude can't see past his own dick" & "You'd figure "17" would be right in their wheelhouse, because what's a better Kings of Leon topic than underage p***y?" If only the Spin's or RS's of the world would go after bands (ANY BAND) like that.
My own 1 cent: I used to love these guys, but they've gone from Uncle Tupelo-land to some kinda dreamy rock machine designed to make chicks pressure their boyfriends to buy front row seat from Stub Hub. Regardless, they are an interesting case study. I just wish I could be KoL-skinny!

What a silly review, IMO...I couldn't disagree more, but I guess everyone's entitled to their own opinion. In mine, it's one of the best albums of the year.greggsand wrote:I know some people love to bash Pitchfork & I know some people love to bash Kings of Leon, here's a nice "reeses peanut butter" moment as Pitchfork absolutely skewers the new KoL album:

The new Marc Broussard album, Keep Coming Back, is phenomenal.
The wife is a huge fan of his and we went to his show here in LA a few weeks back and the guy just rocks the damn house. If you haven't heard of him, he's kind of a bluesy southern rock/jazz type of guy from New Orleans. It's really damn good.

Went and saw Opeth in Buffalo last night. They are on tour supporting the "Watershed" album they released this summer. Here is a post I put on the Opeth forums. (Set list etc. had been posted prior to mine, and people were asking for overall reviews etc.)
===============================
I'm probably an old fart compared to most here. (I'm 38).
I took my innocent wife down to Buffalo (from Toronto area) to spend the day doing some shopping etc... then off to her first (and probably last) concert of this type.
I had recently seen Opeth in Toronto, and was blown away. I've only somewhat recently discovered them so this is really my first year of trying to find where they are playing and getting to their shows.
Nachtmystium - very tight band, but musically did nothing for me apart from the drummer who was very good.
High On Fire - Again, very tight, and a bit better.. but when you know what is coming next how is this somewhat generic metal supposed to compete? I like Matt Pike's stage presence, but he needs to put on a shirt and pull up his pants just a bit more... to hide his butt crack (yikes!).
My wife was thinking "what the hell am I doing here" after these first two acts.
Both opening acts seemed "out of place" like a previous poster said.
Opeth kicked some ass. You could tell there were some small gaffs in a couple of the tunes early on in the set, but they just move right on and blow you away anyway.
One thing that was really funny (to me) was that during the Lotus Eater, in the middle where it breaks into the "funk" part... people on the floor were still banging their heads like it was the heaviest s*** they'd ever heard, and some were even moshing LOL.
Mike's crowd interaction and humour was good, as usual. When he first walked on stage, he opened with a very geeky, quick flash of the "sign of the horns" with his big, eyes-wide-open smile... showing that he is ready to have a good time and interact with the crowd. One chic kept yelling in a really high-pitched scream "I want your babies". Mike seemed to find that somewhat creepy but eventually came around and asked her "Do you have big tits" LOL.
Martin's regular bass went out of tune at one point and he was fiddling with it between songs, and they swapped in his 5-string while the tech worked on it. Could tell it wasn't what he would normally play on that song, since once the tech had it tuned, he quickly changed back to the 4-string during a break in the song. And, from where I was standing, (2nd level, off to the left of the stage in front of Frederick) I could see the tech holding the newly tuned 4-string at the side of the stage, dancing what can only be described as a "jig" while waiting to hand it to Martin. Martin caught a glimpse of that, had a big smile, and looked to me like he had to turn away to stop from laughing.
Great show. Getting to hear Hope Leaves and Deliverance were highlights for me.

I HATED their last album, and disliked the one before. I did think Young Liars was decent. However, I've heard this entire album and I actually like it! Except for one or two tracks it is surprisingly good. A few people I know who really liked Return to Cookie Mountain and have heard this are less than impressed - it may be one of those things where the changes they've made turn on or off an equal number of listeners.Spooky wrote:Just heard snippets of the new TV On the Radio album and WOW! I'm sure I could find the entire thing now to download but I am going to patiently wait this one out and buy the CD.
I've been listening a lot to Amanda Palmer's solo debut. It sounds somewhat like her band the Dresden Dolls, only filled out with strings, horns, guitars and other ornamentation. These arrangements fit the poppier approach of the songs, in the same way the austere simplicity of drums and piano fit the arch malice of the work she's done as part of the Dresden Dolls.
Wow...hated Cookie Mountain? I thought it was amazing. And yes, this ones sounds quite different from the samples I have heard and I love it!EZSnappin wrote:I HATED their last album, and disliked the one before. I did think Young Liars was decent. I'm in the same ship: "Cookie Mountain" did nothing for me as my first exposure to TV on the Radio. I listened to it a few times, and it didn't register at all.
But this new record is working for me. I don't love it, but it's interesting me enough for repeated listens. Definitely has that "onion" feel of many great records -- there are many layers to peel back to get the full feel of the album.
Take care,
PK

Okay, so I have the patience of a 5 year old. I went and 'obtained' the new TV on the Radio as well as the Kings of Leon.
I just gave a listen and they are both quite good.
TV: Woah! I love it so far. Completely dig the new direction. Great production. Cannot wait to listen more intently a few more times.
KoL: Okay...definitely more pop oriented BUT very fun and catchy. Do I wish it were 'rawer'? Yes. That said, I do like the song writing and the melodies. If it were produced a bit differently I think I would like it even more but it is not nearly as much of a disappointment I was expecting. They need to dial back the reverb a bit, especially on his voice and the snare drum. Oh well. Still a fun listen and seems like a nice addition to their catalogue.
I will be purchasing both these on release day whic I typically do when I respect the artist and think they put out a prodcut worthy of my hard earned cash!

A couple new artists (new to me) that I 'discovered':
Dntel - One of the members of Postal Service. 'Dumb Luck' is the album. Incredible produced album. Very fun listen. Interesting, melodic, textured. Neat stuff.
Radical Face: Some guy names Ben something or other who also has a more electronic band which I mention next. The album is called Ghost. Very neat. His voice gets a bit old after a while but nothing bad. Almost kind of like a folk 'Death Cab'.
Electric President: The Radical Face guys more electronic stuff. Postal Service-ish stuff. Fun listen as well.
