The point is that just because this market screw-up will be very, very expensive, we'd be foolish to think every private sector lender has learned their lesson and that there's no need for better, tighter regulation.

Speaking of which, Paul Krugman has a new column on the systemic flaws in the current financial system.

You don't need every private sector lender to learn their lesson. You just need the ones that fail not to cause the whole industry to go supercritical.

You have to be very careful with regulation, though, because as I said before, there are almost always unintended loopholes and consequences, in addition to the up-front negative effects.

Besides, when the guys in Congress who oversee the banks are triggering bank runs or are "friends of Angelo," what gives you confidence that more government oversight will make things better?

Many eggs are fertilized but never implant in the uterus in women who have unprotected sex but don't use the pill or an IUD --> I guess the argument is that when that occurs it's a natural death, but when it occurs due to an IUD that's because an external influence.

Very interesting - because it brings up the question of when exactly a fertilized egg becomes a 'person'. Fascinating stuff.

Well some people believe the emergency contraceptive pills are abortifacients.

There have been several cases of pharmacists who've refused to dispense them or even regular contraceptives.

Even some cases of pharmacists giving morality lectures to young women who were trying to fill prescriptions.

Far be it from me to gloat over another man's troubles, but this is like Christmas in August. As I wrote back in January:

I've been around these parts long enough that my politics are pretty well known, so this should say a lot. I would vote for any of the Democrats...twice, WAY before I would cast a vote for Edwards. No other candidate for major office in my lifetime has turned my stomach the way that guy does. I'm talking literally, here.

Maybe it's because I spent too many years dealing with megalomaniac plaintiffs' lawyers enamored with spinning elaborate white knight fantasies about themselves, but his sanctimony and faux-populism absolutely set me off! He's the living embodiment of the word disingenuous.

Sorry for the rant in what has otherwise been a fairly civil thread, but I'm telling you this guy just sets me off

Rudy Giuliani is giving the keynote address at the Republican National Convention.

Man, McCain is doing better in the polls. I didn't think the GOP needed to trot out "Mayor 9/11" for another episode of "Fear Factor," telling the nation that the U.S. will be unsafe and attacked by legions of terrorists if a Democrat sits in the White House.

I'm surprised at this choice of keynote speaker considering the economy and high gas prices seem to be the No. 1 issue among Americans now.

Interesting choice. Polling must show that most Americans believe that national defense is the issue in which the Republicans have a clear edge over the Democrats, so the GOP must want to pour it on with Rudy. That's all he's really capable of talking about with any authority.

I largely agree. However, it is likely that a high-profile moment at the convention was part of the deal that got Giuliani to bail out and back McCain so early.

Some pundits were saying last night that McCain's strategy is to continue what Clinton did in the primaries with the 3 AM phone call commercial.

That is, Obama isn't ready to be commander in chief, so scare voters again.

That worked with white blue-collars in several primaries and those are the voters McCain is targeting in states like PA, OH and others.

Gas prices has eased quite a bit, so if oil doesn't go back up, maybe security issues rise in importance.

Obama is suppose to be leaning towards Biden while McCain has dropped hints about Lieberman and Ridge. But some think those names are a smokescreen so that social conservatives are relieved when McCain chooses Romney, who's at least pro-life, even if he recently flip-flopped to pro-life.
