Naples39 wrote:I'm not sure what exactly 'tapping up' is, but what is wrong with SAF confirming that he has made a legal bid for Berbatov, and that he hopes/expects Berbatov will ultimately join the squad?

I thought tapping up concerned approaching the player illegally or outside the transfer window, neither of which seems to be present here (as far as I can tell).
Man Utd haven't made any sort of official bid for him, nor an official approach that Spurs have confirmed. Just as in the case of Ronaldo but in reverse, they are hoping to get the player to demand a move, in order to drive down the asking price.

Interesting that one of the first clubs to go running off to FIFA like a little girl is one of the most consistent culprits. Still, they do say it takes one to know one.

At least I understand what you mean, though what I read says they did in fact make a bid.

United confirms Berbatov bid
Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that Manchester United has made Tottenham an offer for highly-rated striker Dimitar Berbatov - and that United fully expect to entice the Bulgarian from Spurs before the end of the summer.
"We have made Tottenham an offer on Berbatov and we have good expectations that this deal will go through," Ferguson told reporters.

Mmmmm, so sayeth the Drunken Hypocrite....no confirmation or otherwise from Spurs, and they haven't been making any real efforts to sign a striker - they are also rumoured to be on the verge of selling Robbie Keane to Liverpool, so selling Berbatov wouldn't seem too much sense at this time.

Indeed, as I speak

Woohoo we've been reported! We're finally big time! (until we realize we're so skint that we can't actually afford the player we've destabilized i.e Barry)

It's actually Robbie Keane you are being reported over

Xavi Alonso's sale to Juventus falling through seems to have blown a hole in the cash flow forecast.

Still, think of it as a timely warning - anyone who would countenance paying £18m for Barry or £20m for Keane is unfit to handle money.

Is Tott owned by the same people as the Packers? It's just so hard not to draw a parallel... :D

I believe they will sell one of them. I think they have to. They seem to stock up on wingers, which usually means the team will switch to a 4-3-3. Which means one striker. Obviously Berbatov is better suited to be the lonely striker in English football, so as long as they get anything decent for Keane that's who they would be willing to let go. However, judging by their behavior, they haven't decided yet. I think it's because they are in the hunt for Bentley. If they get him, they might be forced to sell Berbatov, just to get their money back. So, it's pretty much a toss-up, but in my view Keane is more likely to leave. Especially if Tott is planning on contending this season, which they seem to be, at least at this point.

Makalele and Bouhlarouz leave Chelsea today - blimey, they'll be down to just 50 players soon.

Less impressive is Wayne Bridge signing another 4 year contract there. Decent money, but shows a real lack of ambition unless he thinks he's going to be supplanting Ashley Cole (which he might do - Cole is a poor defender, let's be honest).

If anyone wants to see Klinnsman's managing debut or just want to watch a competitive match, Bayern and Dortmund will play the German Supercup tomorrow (Wed.) on GolTV.

Can't believe Bayern played a friendly at the weekend against a supporters club, squeeking an 11-1 win.

Thereagain, City are playing Stockport County soon, which amounts to pretty much the same. Good warmup for the second leg of the Euro Expedition.

Every year Bayern gives away a "dream fixture" in a random drawing. This year the Nabburg Fan Club won it.

From the BBC site:
Manchester City boss Mark Hughes is set to make a shock bid to bring former Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse, now at Marseille, back to the Premier League. (Daily Mirror)
"Shock bid" indeed. I think I just heard Dave's forehead hit his desk. LOL

Compared to the 'striking power' of our forwards last year, I am a viable option upfront. Cisse is a little fragile though - thinking about him breaking his leg at Bolton, I think it was, sends shivers through me.

There again, we are being linked with some odd characters at the moment - Lucas Neill and Craig Bellamy, both charter members of the 'could start a fight in an empty house' club, as well as Bentley and Santa Cruz from Blackburn. Apparently Ben Haim from Chelsea is signing tomorrow for £5m.

Looks like getting McBride back home is finally going to happen. And if the Fire unload Barrett in the process it's like double bonus!

My apologies to our Canadian friends who will now have to witness in person the Blackhole Where Scoring Chances Go To DieTM :)

Looks like ManU are going to make the Tevez deal permanent (as expected), also nice to finally see the transfer fee which looks to be around 30 million (32 million according to Soccernet).

Wow.

That's almost TWO Gareth Barrys :)

Yeah, I saw 32m as well. My God, the fees for EPL players are overinflated! To think that you can get Ronnie for 12m, Deco for 6m, and have to pay 18m for Barry?! 20m for Keane?! Outragious. Eto'o will be sold for 13-17m this year. Valencia is willing to let Villa go for 22-24m. Van der Vaart will cost 6-10m to whoever is interested (pay attention Liverpool). The last one, I believe, is the steal of the summer, by the way. They have to sell him, beacause he has an option in his contract to walk away next summer for 1m euros. His only flaw may be that he is a little soft for EPL, but for this kind of money, I am sure as hell ready to take that chance.

Neither do I, it was the bit about 'where scoring chances go to die' that made me think of Man City.

Got beat 1-0 by Hamburg in a friendly today, so the knives are sharpening among the City faithful already.....but only for the players, like.

Oh my god, tell me about it! What a steal at even 10 million that would be! I'd much rather see him play for Liverpool than Barry.

I'm actually surprised that more teams aren't after Van Der Vaart.

Considering our striker situation is as follows:

Danny Dichio - TFC legend, but out for a while with a concussion and even when healthy, not what we want as our main guy.

Jeff Cunningham - How he has scored 99 goals in this league is ridiculous. I've honestly never hated any Toronto athlete more (excluding Vince Carter maybe). He dogs it every night and is way more infuriating than Barrett simply because of this and his terrible attitude. He's also mastered the miss from 3 yards out.

Ibrahim - Obviously we can't count on a 16 year old even if he did score in his debut. Looks great though.

I welcome Barrett - at least he leaves it out on the field. We are certainly still searching for a DP striker so I don't think anyone expects him to be a savior of any sorts.

Another TFC fan in here sweet, now the Red Patch Boys can start screaming "THIS IS OUR HOUSE" in this forum lol. But for real we need anyone except #96 to play up front, crap we have a 16yr old as our starting striker now.

Looks like you might get your wish - ex-Man City player Paul Dickov looks like he's on the way.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/footbal ... 509399.stm

I wouldn't be relying on him to score loads, but he's an annoying little sod who'll do a job in that league.

Liverpool should complete the £18million signing of Robbie Keane within the next 24 hours.

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story ... nd&cc=5901

Pretty much what I expected. Good move for Tott. How good it will turn out for Liverpool, we will have to wait and see. I just don't see Torres, Kuyt, and Keane on the field together. Unless Benitez smartens up and puts Kuyt at right back, where he belongs. I can't help but wonder how much of those 18-20m Rafa spent for Keane is really the cost of Man U not getting Berbatov.
