Agreed. But I still think they are one of the best out right now. Even with 'On Call'.greggsand wrote:
[edit] ah, that's probably not fair. just because KOL is a never-ending marketing project, does not mean they're not a quality band. I like them, but I'd love to see them tell the labels to f'off & not make any more songs like "on call". *shivers*

I know Oasis gets roundly criticized for apeing The Beatles, but good Lord, I don't think I've ever heard a more blatant Beatles' ripoff than Panic at the Disco's new album.
Christ, some of the cuts on this record make "Don't Look Back in Anger" by Oasis sound original!
Take care,
PK

I think I'm going crazy but I could swear PK posted a link to a metal podcast or something and now I can't find it.
On a side note I just got done listening to the Scars on Broadway debut and it's amazing. For those that don't know it's the side project of System of a Down guitarist Daron Malakian and where Serj's solo project sounded like System without Daron, Daron's sounds like System without Serj. Any SOAD fans should definitely check this out.

Scoop:
I pulled it because I jumped the gun with it, to be honest. The first tune on it was heavy, so I figured the rest of it would follow suit. Nope. Veered into some strange sh*t that was far from heavy even though the podcast was advertised as metal and heavier tunes.
Sorry for the false alarm.
Take care,
PK

Based on what I have read, I think the answer is yes, but is Lucinda Williams always such a monster on stage? I saw her in Atlanta last night at the Botanical Gardens and it was hard work for the crowd just keeping her happy enough to keep playing. She had problems with the lights (to her credit, the lights there are close to the band and she is not the first to complain about the glare/heat coming off them) but this was followed by complaints about the sound and later just the heat (which was not bad for Georgia in July - and she is from the south). She would pow-wow with the band between songs and would then often apologize to the crowd for the problems with the previous song. Actually she and her band sounded very good and it was a solid show, but my wife said that it reminded her of some classic George Jones concerts she had been to in the past. Lucinda told the crowd that she was "sober as a f-ing judge" but that is up for debate. For the crowd, it was good theatre, but I would not want to play in her band.
The concert was disjointed (if there was a playlist, I think it was fluid) but tilted toward rock. Interesting show, but I am not sure I would want to repeat the experience.

I've seen her a couple times and to be kinds shes...inconsistent. There was one amazing show at the Metro which was ass-kicking end to end and concluded with a stunning encore of Cold, Cold Heart and Killing Floor by Howlin' Wolf!! Man, that was a good night!

Anyone catch that Pitchfork review of Black Kids' new record?? At first I thought it was a broken web link or something. Turns out, uh, it wasn't:

Sad that they couldn't just own up to being fluffers for a mediocre band. If they want to play Kingmaker, they should be honest enough to admit when the Emperor has no clothes.greggsand wrote:Anyone catch that Pitchfork review of Black Kids' new record?? Yeah, I mangled that metaphor beyond all bounds of decency.
Not as funny as their review that was a youtube link to a chimpanzee pissing in his own mouth.

I know there's some serious Kings of Leon fans here. Here's a little sample, I guess, of a track from the new album:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4rpYPpjwsI
A little cringe-worthy at the start, but gets better (IMO).

I know a few of you guys have been reppin' for the latest Atmosphere album. Mainly because of the praise here, I decided to give it a chance. Holy crap, this is great! One of the most exciting albums I've heard in a while - grooves, sing-along bits, thoughtful lyrics - all there, all good.
A big thanks guys. When Life Gives You Lemons is a keeper.

Thanks for that link. A bit scary but if this is their one radio, 'pop' tune and the others are rockin' then I won't mind.greggsand wrote:I know there's some serious Kings of Leon fans here. Here's a little sample, I guess, of a track from the new album:

Not 'new' music, but new 'stuff'. A completely kick-ass doc around the making of The Smiths "The Queen is Dead". Nicely done:
http://pitchfork.tv/week/the-smiths-/chapter-01
Also, semi-old news in the same genre, both the movie, Control, & the newly released Joy Division doc (both on dvd now) are EXCELLENT for joy division fans. The Joy Division doc has a ton of stuff I've never seen before. good times.

Wow -- what a tour!
Sadly, the closest date to me is four hours away -- Toronto. And Nov. 11 is my daughter's 10th birthday, so that's a definite no-go.
This tour touches upon my only complaint about the Syracuse area: It's an absolute wasteland for live national touring musical acts above the club level.
The Carrier Dome and War Memorial both have horrid acoustics, so bands avoid both venues like leprosy. The Turning Stone Casino in Oneida and its vastly overinflated prices have siphoned away any of the mid-sized acts that might play the gorgeous and acoustically perfect Landmark Theatre in downtown Syracuse.
Take care,
PK

I'm obviously going retro in my old age - either that, or reading Michael Azerrad's book 'Our Band Could Be Your Life' has affected me subliminally.
Regardless, I picked up the Minutemen CD 'Double Nickels on the Dime' and Mission of Burma's 'Vs', and they are both sorted - quality reminders of when music meant more to people than 'how many units can we shift/how often can we be on MTV ?'
Oh, and PK - I'd rather listen to Oasis than The Hold Steady. Having said that, I'd rather be burnt at the stake than listen to Oasis.

lol... Not really a fan of Hold Steady or Drive-By, but this tour makes waaaay more sense than the Hold Steady/Counting Crows (gag reflex) shows the hold steady are doing. That's a kind of stink a band with a nice indie-following may not be able to wash-off...davet010 wrote: Oh, and PK - I'd rather listen to Oasis than The Hold Steady. Dave, if you're rolling back the clock with a minutemen/burma-vibe, check out Fugazi's 13 Songs (if u haven't already).
Double Nickels is amazing. I became a recent convert after watching the "We Jam Econo" documentary on the Minutemen.
And you Hold Steady haterz can suck it
I think "Sequestered in Memphis" is my favorite song of the year.
I have a couple things I've been really digging lately:
M83, "Saturdays = Youth". It's very 80s and very cinematic, feeling a lot like the last scene of "Lost in Translation" where "Just Like Honey" plays. It manages to avoid crossing over into cheesy, instead feeling both innocent and mature at the same time.
Holy F*ck (self titled LP). Gimmicky name, great record. Mostly instrumental blend of electronic, dance, and jam music, all done without samples or drum machines. Supposedly improvised. The rhythm of the songs is infectious.
I also didn't think that Black Kids album was that bad. It's a lot like the Killers first album, it would have been a great EP.

I'm really digging The Silver Jews' new album, "Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea."
It's the band's most accessible (read: poppy) record, yet David Berman's lyrics are as witty and smart as anything you'll hear in rock/alternative/country rock today.
"Suffering Jukebox" might be my favorite song of this summer. Anybody who can put human qualities to an old jukebox in a song lyric and pull it off -- with panache and a Gram Parsons-like country-rock jingle-jangle, too -- is cool by me!

"Suffering Jukebox" is first tune on the player at the band's Web site. "Open Field" and "Strange Victory, Strange Defeat" -- also on the MySpace player -- also are good tunes.
Take care,
PK

I've been a huge Berman fan since Starlite Walker. One day, someone, somewhere, will release a Jews "Best Of" & it'll be one of the greatest Best Of's of all time. Also, be on the lookout of a Sliver Jews doc coming out soon ("Silver Jew").pk500 wrote:I'm really digging The Silver Jews' new album, "Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea."

Have "American Water." Like it, but I must admit I like the last two Jews' albums -- "Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea" and "Tanglewood Numbers" than the first four, for a few reasons.
I think "Lookout" is more Gram Parsons-like in sound than the first four, which have more of an indie sound. I'm a sucker for a good jingle-jangle. It's also a bit more accessible and breezy, a pretty peppy album for a guy who tried to kill himself a few years ago! Plus I really like the addition of more prominent vocals by Berman's wife on "Lookout."
"Tanglewood" has more of a Crazy Horse vibe than other Jews' records. It's more plugged-in, more amped and more direct. Again, more my style than classic indie.
That said, the first four records still are quite good and worth a spin by anyone who enjoys good rock music with lyrics that are witty as hell. You're right: A Jews' "best of" will be a killer record that almost no one will appreciate!
Take care,
PK

Yeah, one's American Water enjoyment is directly related to how big of a pavement/malkmus geek you are (guilty as charged)... I saw the Joos in L.A. last year, it was quite a treat. I couldn't help but think how great it would be if Malkmus walked onto the stage and ripped into a little Smith & Jones Forever.
Then again, I think the same thing every time I see Wilco & wonder "what if Farrar just came walking out on-stage..."

Know what you mean about Wilco. Hell, I'd feel that way about Bennett. As much as I enjoy the Cline-Sansone-Jorgensen influences in the current lineup, my favorite Wilco record remains "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot."
