Should sports game reviews follow the same formula?

Post by Ed_Farias »

Not sure if this is as been discussed before, but I feel sports reviews should not use the standard review system that many sites use.

IMO, many people look for different aspects in their sports games, and I am not sure that they should follow the single "overall" score.

For example, maybe they should broken up like so. And the review for each section should be reviewed by someone that fits into that category.

Casual Gamer Gameplay- I think this score should be geared towards the casual gamer to that sport. I don't watch hockey much, so a sim type game in hockey is not really what I look for. A game like Hitz or NHL rivals suits me just fine.

Sim Gamer Gameplay - This should be geared towards the hardcore gamer of that sport. I am a baseball freak, so I want my baseball game to be as true to the sport as possible.

Computer AI - A review based on how accurate the AI reacts to situations based on the sport.

Franchise Mode - A seperate ranking for the franchise mode of that sports game. The depth and functionality as true to the sport.

Online Mode - A score soley to review the online features a game has.

What do you guys think, way to much work for most sites I know, but maybe not for the DSP :).

good thoughts Ed, maybe you can write a review of MLB 2005 for the DSP Blofg using that criteria. That would be a great read.

We here at DSP are averse to work, so you're ideas are completely invalid. :)

Those are good ideas. Only problem I have with it is that along with ratings for things like graphics, interface, and gameplay, you end up with a bunch of ratings. For our reviews, the ratings are gameplay, audio, interface, and gameplay. We'll probably change these around a bit, especially since audio is not terribly important and lots of other things can be given a numerical rating outside of that. Splitting up gameplay into casual/sim components might be a good idea. We're open to any and all suggestions here, so we'll take them into consideration and maybe see how they work on future reviews.

Yeah, I figured those other categories (Graphics etc.) could be included in each section. For example, Joe "baseball is boring" Schmoe could write the review for the casual gamer.

Then Ed "Baseball is the bomb" Farias could write the review on the Sim aspect.

Then Bob "I am no thumb jockey" Smith, can do a full write up of the franchise/ Manage only mode.

Just some thoughts, I might give it a try after a few days with ASB :).

Good thoughts, but I think the Franchise Mode score could be included in a gameplay blurb somewhere. I personally don't care for franchise modes all that much, so I feel like a special section only on that is kind of a waste.

Except there are a lot of people out there that do care about it, and many would love in depth reviews about it rather than just a blurb. I think including the manage only mode in with the franchise review is good too. They both kind of go hand in hand.
