There's no doubt about it. How bout them releasing the FREE Atmosphere album "Strictly Leakage" just to promote "Lemons"? That was a crazy idea and I think it worked.Badger_Fan wrote:Rhymesayers is doing some incredible stuff. Oh yeah, I'm not saying that album was the greatest, but it's definitely a cool way to promote the "real" album dropping later in the year. "Lemons" is fantastic, and it's good they are finally starting to get some exposure...even though I think you and I are the only two who have heard of them on this board. LOL.Badger_Fan wrote:I thought that was a good idea too, though I thought that Strictly Leakage was just ok. Being in Minneapolis, everything they do gets a lot of press, and I'm glad to see them starting to have some success.

New old music: Saw REM, Modest Mouse, & The National at the Hollywood Bowl last night. Good times. The National was as 'sleepy' (aka boring) as I thought they'd be. Modest Mouse was all over the place & prob not in the ideal setting for Isaac's screaming & yelling. Def not a "play the hits" show. It was cool seeing Johnny Marr, & he really does seem to dig being a "mouse" (crazy).
REM was a good time. Tons of energy & a nice mix of old, new, and "hits". Hell, they opened the show with "Pretty Persuasion" - wouldn't have guessed that one. It was also nice to see no real set list for show that big. There was a few on-stage 'band meetings' on what to play next. One of the meetings lead to "Sitting Still".

EZ I'm glad to hear new Opeth is good. I don't have it yet. I saw them last weekend here in Toronto, and they were incredible. They are pretty much my favourite band right now.
One of the acts that opened for them and that is on tour with them and Dream Theater, is a band called "3". Really really good stuff...

Glad to hear they put on a good show. I wasn't able to make it to Boston to see them but will probably make the trip next time 'round.
Opeth, to me, are a strange beast. I generally don't care for prog metal (like Dream Theater, for instance) but Opeth is mixing some strange brew that has progressive elements but doesn't leave a foul taste. Maybe they'll be a gateway that allows me to appreciate some of the other music I've turned my ears away from over the years.
I'm always up for recommendations. My plan now is to work my way back through the Opeth catalog and then open up from there.

Check out this prog band. They're called the Pax Cecilia and you can get their album for free on their website. Here's a link: http://www.paxcecilia.com/download.html
The new Opeth is very good. I'm not sure I like it as much as the earlier stuff but it is still quite good.

Agree wholeheartedly. Solid rock album. Nothing jumped out and grabbed me as great, but nothing turned my ear canals inside-out from disgust, either.Brando70 wrote:I managed to download the new Hold Steady before it's due to be released. Another solid effort from those guys. They've broadened their sound a little while still delivering the kind of energetic bar rock that made me a fan in the first place. Worth checking out when it hits later this month.
Take care,
PK

Not to get too far OT, but have you tried Amazon.com for downloads? It's DRM free, easy, fast, cheaper, the quality is better, and the songs are added to your iTunes library anyway.GTHobbes wrote:I'm looking forward to picking it up tonight from ITunes but am curious if anyone here has heard it.
On another note for those interested in purchases, the new Weezer is $5.99 at Circuit City this week. Is that an all-time low for a new release at retail or perhaps a misprint?
Thanks, Leebo...I haven't tried it but will when I get home tonight.Leebo33 wrote:Not to get too far OT, but have you tried Amazon.com for downloads? Thanks for the heads-up on this one. Just downloaded it, and it's terrific. I actually wasn't all that disappointed with the Roots. It probably helps that I'm not a huge fan. This album seemed a lot more "mainstream" though...so maybe that's why I like em a bit more. I am by no means saying it's terrific, but it was disappointing to me. "Lemons" is significantly better, that's for sure. I recommend almost all of Atmosphere's albums (and EPs). Having just found them a couple years ago, I'm very impressed with their older work as well.RobVarak wrote:Thanks for the heads-up on this one. Just downloaded it, and it's terrific. Listed to the latest Disturbed disc Indestrucible a few times over the past 48 hours.
Eh.
I loved their debut, and really enjoyed their 2nd, and liked most of their 3rd. This one sounds like Disturbed, but it feels like I've already heard these songs before. Sticking to a particular style is fine with me, but other than 1 or 2 tracks nothing sticks out. There is little variety to the tempo of the songs and they all blend together.
On a positive note, I'm really digging Sybreed. A pretty much perfect blend of agression & melody (just like Bullets For My Valentine)

Fair few from this side of the pond.
Fans of Scouse surrealists Half Man Half Biscuit should check out their latest opus, "CSI:Ambleside"...had me in stitches as usual, particularly the latest one of their infamous list songs. 'National Shite Day'.
The Fall continue to plough their own furrow (and to hell with anyone else) with their new one, 'Imperial Wax Solvent'.
Those who are into their post-rock should get hold of Silver Mt Zion's latest, "13 blues for 13 moons"
And lastly, those of us with a keen taste for early 80's synth nostalgia should nip out and get the Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark live CD "Architecture and Morality and more".

Hmmm...never heard of him/them. But any reference to M. Ward and especially Nick Drake have me very intriguied! Can't wait to check this out. Thanks.Brando70 wrote:I just finished listening to For Emma, Forever Ago by Bon Iver. What an amazing album. He mines the same folk area of M.
