I don't think either team is getting rolled. Celtics won the two regular season games by an average of fifteen and held the Lakers to 38% shooting. I don't expect Boston to put up 108 a game (they've been dreadfully anemic in the playoffs) but the Celtics defense has been more than solid. They've done a great job closing out on shooters and would expect that to continue.

I think it'll go six or seven. I'd love to see the Celtics win, but I think the Lakers have proven their worthy of a title, and have played extremely well both offensively and defensively. They've come from behind, held leads, and made stops when they needed it.

More than anything, I'm just glad to see the two best teams in the finals for a change.

Lakers in 4 or 5...and I HATE the Lakers. It's unfortunate they are so good...and they will be even better next year.

I'm wondering who would be on your All-NBA starting 5 from this season.

For me:

Chis Paul at PG.

Kobe (obviously) at SG

LeBron at Forward

Here's where it gets more difficult for me.

At the other forward, I'll go with Kevin Garnett (Defensive Player of the Year)

At center, I'm the most confused. Dunkin? Shaq? Pau Gasol?

Yeah,

If you noticed in the post game press conference, it looked like it was bothering him.

Good thing is that they have till Sunday to work on it.

Anyways, big game 1 win for the C's. :D

So much for getting rolled.

C's at least have assured getting back to Boston in a worst case sceranio.

Not a bad start for the underdogs. :D

NBA must want the series to come back to Boston.

The FT disparity will reverse in LA in at least 2 of the 3 games.

And it will have nothing to do with the style of play of the teams.

It's just predestined.

This reminds me of the Miami / Dallas Finals. I won't be surprised if LA takes all games on their home court. Phil Jackson has always been good about whining after games he's lost complaining about FTA or other things. So the refs will take that into account and in Game 3, see about a 30-5 disparity in FT's for the Lakers.

I take it that everyone outside of So.Cal hates Kobe right?

I do :)

Last night was the first NBA game I watched more than 1 quarter of all season. I guess the whole Lakers/Celtics mystique drew me in, even though I don't really care for either team. I'm rooting for Boston because I like Garnett and Ray Allen.

No surprise to me that the first game I decide to watch is filled with ref controversy about the foul calls. It's nice to see that travelling is still never called (I may have seen one called last night bt I'm not sure) and that no player ever thinks he has ever really committed a foul.

It was nice to see 2 really good teams play though.

true to form, the FT disparity was on the Lakers side tonight. Typical NBA.

Got to give credit to Doc Rivers though that he didn't whine like a little b*tch after the game about how Ramojanivic or whatever his name is got more ft attempts in the first qtr than the whole celtics team.

On a related note, I hear Kobe is doing what he does best, cheating on his wife. So who's the Lakers Cheerleader he's been doing?

That ref that got busted is bringing everyone down. I guess we already knew, but I tend to believe his accusations.

2002 Lakers/Kings

Donaghy also told the FBI that a couple of referees appeared to cook up foul calls in a 2002 NBA playoff game that likely involved the Los Angeles Lakers and the Sacramento Kings in order to have the series go a seventh game.

Damn, C's had a real shot at putting the Lakers away.

If the LA comes back and wins this, the C's could look back at this game as the one that could have basically locked up the title.

Celts had a chance to tie with 2 min but their bench guy missed an open jumper and then Vlade hit that 3 to put them up 5. So close.

As for the ref, this just confirms what everyone thought about the crooked NBA and it's crooked refs. I remember that 2002 series where Kobe elbowed/punched Bibby in the face and bibby got that foul. You know there's probably a lot of other refs out there that have bet on games but were smart enough not to get caught. Whole league is just FIXED!

Well it's his legacy at stake.

He brought prosperity to the league but the way he did it is probably going to be re-examined.

And you immediately assume this guy is telling the truth? Really?

The problem I have with the NBA conspiracy theories, and this is pretty true with most conspiracies theories, is that you have to assume that not a single ref has any integrity. None of them would come out and speak publicly about games being fixed. They are all evil henchmen of the league. I find that VERY hard to believe.

If there really were secret memos going out to the refs it would be so easy for one of them to say "hey, I don't like this, i believe in the integrity of the game and I'm going to save these emails and show them to the press". He wouldn't be worried about getting fired. He has physical evidence and he would almost assuredly keep his job if a new commissioner came in because he's the guy with integrity that stood up to the big bad men in the head office.

I don't doubt that league memos went out telling refs to crack down on "moving screens". There is nothing wrong with any league telling it's officials that they need to enforce the rules. The NHL comes to mind.

I agree with LA King. You could have a lone ref or a couple refs conspiring to fix games, but to think that this could be done from the top down for at least six years without anyone finding out is pretty illogical.

The thing is, anomalies do not prove conspiracy. The 2002 Kings-Lakers Game 6 certainly was very poorly officiated, but there's no evidence other than bad calls and the word of a known game-fixer that this game was fixed.

If there were, of all things, a paper or e-mail trail for this, I just can't see it staying secret for so long. There's probably more incentive to blow the whistle on a game-fixing scandal than keep it hidden.

I don't have to believe him to believe the story. Just watching the games, and that Game 6 in 2002 specifically, it was obvious. This just confirms it. 27 free throws the Lakers shot in that 4th quarter. "The Kings were the better team tonight, they deserved to win, but somehow we did," said Lakers coach Phil Jackson, who won his 23rd straight playoff series. And Donaghy didn't claim every ref was in on this. He mentioned a couple who he referred to as "company men" that worked closely with the NBA execs.

Here's some footage from the Rockets/Mavs game that was also mentioned. http://youtube.com/watch?v=7eY8qGHU52E
