I'm in need of direction to rFactor 101. It looks as if I will be purchasing rFactor in the next day or two. I'm not real computer savy so i'm going to need some resources so I can better learn the process of installing mods etc.... If anyone can provide me with a link to "rFactor mods for idiots" i'd appreciate it very much.

Welcome aboard Dave. It's the best $29.99 you will ever spend. :)

Do yourself the favor and buy the DVD version from Amazon. You won't have to deal with Trymedia's activation process and you get free shipping and pay no tax buying from Amazon.com

Those two links that Jimmy posted should be your two primary sources for rFactor. As to what mods to get that's all up to you because there are thousands of mods available that include cars, tracks and package mods. It all depends what type of racing you like. That's what's so cool about rFactor.

I was skeptical at first but I have come to be a believer in how the product has shaped up to be.

Thanks Rod,

I'm really looking forward to it. I've always enjoyed a good racing experience. I still have fond memories of the pre marriage days when a buddy and I would spend damn near complete weekends playing Indy Car Racing II. We ran cat 5 through our condo so we could play mulitplayer.

I'll never be too fast, in fact, i'll most likely be the last one across the line.. However, I'll be clean and will embrace the experience. I smell potential "crack in a box" and if I really dig this at some point i'm going to be tempted to get a new rig to run it and that is something even I would have a hard time justifying. I bleed Mac and to think of buying a PC for a single game makes me shake :) Let's hope the "computer found in the basement" has enough muscle for me to enjoy it long term without the constant need for more FPS, better graphics etc...)

As for cars.. I've always been a fan of open wheel. Indy / F1.. that's my preference.

Rod - do you ever play online? In fact... How does joining an online race work? is there voice in this strange world of PC online racing? I'll be lost without my friends list and Invite system 8O

Fifa:

Joining a race is simple. You hit the Join button and find the DSP races in the list of available servers/games. Don always starts our rooms with DSP, followed by the name of the series we're racing. So DSP Meganes, DSP FBMW, etc., etc.

Once you click on that game, you'll be asked to enter a password since we use private rooms. We always use this password: siam007

Then you'll enter a lobby room with all of the fellas where there's a chat window in which you can type. When you're on track, you can hit Ctrl-T to type text chat, too.

Sooner or later, we should think about getting Teamspeak and headphones so we can do voice chat, but there's not a lot of impetus for that right now.

Hope to see you soon!

Take care,
PK

Nah I would get smoked. I'm not good enough to race with those rFactor veterans. As far as you getting a PC, it's time to join the rest world and buy a real computer. :D

Rodster.. dude.. You'll smoke me as I've never played the game. But as I tell the kids in our soccer program "It's not about who scores the most goals, it's about who's having the most fun." I'm going to be bad for a long time. I'll be happy if I simply see improvement week over week. I'll most likely be relegated to PK's pit crew after my first night :)

if the vets are cool with allowing us some track time and getting some new guys up to speed I think you should hop online as well.. or we can try to spread the game a bit and get some rookies together to turn a few laps where we don't feel like we are getting in anyone's way :) I remember these guys fro mthe Toca days.. I felt like I was driving Herbie the love bug.

As for your real PC comment -

"could someone restart him please?"

Come on Rod, I come in at the back of the pack most races but it's still a lot more fun than racing the AI.

Every new copy of the game, whether its on DVD or direct download, is the latest 1255F version, I believe.

Thanks,
PK

You'd be surprised, Rod. It tends to be fairly close among us all, and we're a mixed ability group as far and speed and talent goes. I'd be amazed if you didn't have a blast online with us.

Fifa (and Rod, of course), you'll have no worries as far as track time goes. We run practice before all our races, and mods and tracks are announced some hours in advance, which gives you the chance to download them if necessary and run some offline laps too. Smurfy, when confronted with tracks and mods he's new to, sits and watches the AI for a while to get some pointers, and that can work too. In addition, we're not so competitive that we don't share our secrets.

Absolutely. I drove only the Fiat Dallara last weekend, but it was loads of oversteering fun.

Hey fellas a new update v1.2 for V8 Supercars is now available at rFactorcentral.com I installed it, and it changes the physics and updates the graphics a little bit.

I can't get over how good the Japan F3 mod is. What a blast driving these cars at Suzuka. :D

Downloaded these and took them for a spin today at Suzuka, and I must admit I'm a bit underwhelmed.

Cockpits are great, and AI is solid at Suzuka. But I just don't feel that pronounced of an improvement in the physics and handling of this mod compared to the ISI F3 car.

This car has a bit more "weight" to it and doesn't slide as much in corners as the ISI F3 car. That's about the only difference I can detect, and it's minor.

Doubt I'll keep these since the Toyota Atlantics are a superior mid-level open-wheel mod in terms of physics and fun, in my opinion. I'll stick with them.

Take care,
PK

You'll have to hit a torrent site for the full game. I don't think a demo was ever made for it. The game isn't in circulation any longer. It came out in 2002.

Someone is selling a copy on Half.com for $52.81

Dave:

If you're interested, it's pretty easy to run a full version of Grand Prix Legends from the demo available at Blackhole Motorsports.

If you can handle a GPL car, you'll have no trouble with rFactor. GPL is a brutally uncompromising, yet very rewarding, sim.

PK.. I downloaded that just a bit ago.. It's a challenge. I was using my xbox controller and that did not work real well as I could not find a way to map the controls to my controller. Gas was A button, brake was B button.... Seemed to me that there was a little downforce missing ;)

Looking forward to a wheel.
