OT: Sipping Alcohol??
For my one OT thread per year...this one is going to be a personal question.
If you had one bottle of hard alcohol to pour and sip on the rocks...what would it be? I'm looking for a nice bottle of 'something' to bring to the wedding next weekend and we're gonna be chillin' in the "poker room" at the country club I'm getting married at. I've decided I'm gonna get a nice bottle of something for my boys...just to chill and sip while waiting for the ceremony to start.
Any suggestions? I'm trying to keep it under 100 bucks and it needs to be smooth since a couple of the guys aren't HARD drinkers or anything. I'm not a big fan of tequila so I guess a scotch a cognac or a bourbon would probably be best...but then again, I don't know a damn thing about straight alcohols.

So you're gonna get liquored up for the wedding, eh? Not a bad idea...
I like all of the suggestions so far. Single malt scotch is good stuff. I have an affinity for a Goldshlager shot, myself, and a bottle of that should only run you around 40-50 bucks or so.

Or you could go bonkers and grab the 24yr McCallan! That stuff ain't cheap! I love the single malts, and any McCallan would be a great choice. If you're not really used to single malts or scotch in general, the differences among the 12, 18, or 24 year old McCallans may be lost on you.
The Oban is also something many would recommend as a sort of 'starter' single malt. It's very good and not very aggressive. Stick with the Highland Malts, as they tend to me more mild and smoother. I prefer the smoky or 'peaty' Islay malts, such as Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Talisker, or Caol Isla, but many non-scotch drinkers could be turned off by those as they tend to be pretty pungent. A friend of mine derides them as having 'that wet dog smell.' She doesn't like whisky at all.
If you go blended, you can't go wrong with one of the non red-label Johnny Walkers. Black is fine, green is even better, and blue-label is a rare and special treat (= expensive as hell!). Or you can go with the Irish whiskeys, say, try Black Bush, which is a better blend of Bushmills.
And of course, congrats on the impending nuptials!

I always have the basic 12-year, but the 17-year looks pretty nice. And as you say, you only get hitched once. Go for it!dbdynsty25 wrote:I've read good things about Macallan...any idea which of these bottles...there are 11 varieties, lol.pk500 wrote:The Macallan single-malt scotch. Man, I knew I could count on you guys.
My brother in law and I are looking into it...we've got five bottles on our list now. I'm certainly not experienced, so it's probably silly to spend that kinda money on a bottle, but f*ck it...
Johnnie Walker Blue (blend) ($170 yikes)
Johnnie Walker Green ($50)
Macallan 18 year ($150)
Macallan 15 year ($80)
Lagavulin Scotch 16 Year ($70) - supposedly this one isn't really for newbies though, so may pass.
The early favorites are the Blue (which my bro in law is just itching to buy FOR me...so I may just let him) and the Macallan 15 year. Anyone else got any info?

If bro-in-law is buying you the Blue, dive in, man! Otherwise, the Macallan 15-year would be lovely.

Yeah, if you can get the Blue get the Blue. I suggested Green because it's reasonable and you said you didn't want to spend that much. And congrats on the wedding db. I don't know how I missed that in your initial post but I did. Who's the lucky fella? Anyone we know?
Seriously, congrats. My wife and I just celebrated our 9-year last night. May you have many a happy year with your new spouse.
