Nope you are wrong sir. It's good 'ol Securom ! Ubisoft dropped Starforce a year ago. I believe they also use Securom as well.pk500 wrote:I bet it has Starforce, too, since it's a damn Codies' disc. The Codies and Ubisoft are about the only douchebags who still use that horrible crap to "protect" their discs.
Take care,

I would never install Starforce on my computer again. I lost a CD rom drive and a disk drive to that crap.
After playing the PC version I think i'm going to get the 360 version when it comes out next week. I don't like the handling of the cars. It's like they have too much grip then you lose grip all of a sudden. The 360 version didn't appear to have that problem based on the demo.
I need to mess with the the control settings to see if I can at least make the handling a little better.
I read comparisons how this is a PGR knock off. Well once you see the interface you can't help but think PGR3's interface. All in all a fun racing game but no where near what Codies was doing back on the original playstation with the first and second Toca games.
Thankfully I have rFactor and Race 07 WTCC for that.

Because Starforce has damaged the disc drives of people who have purchased a legitimate copy of the disc. That's great customer service.dbdynsty25 wrote:I fail to understand why it is dispicable for them to try to protect their proprietary software. I mean I am as big of a leecher as the next guy bit I certainly don't begrudge them for trying to stop me. Lol.

I finally got a chance to play my copy last night, and enjoyed it quite a bit.
I think my disappointment with the demo allowed me to get over my hope for a realistic game, and by now I was ready to take the game for what it is. Be aggressive, and enjoy the white-knuckle racing. Last night it provided for me that 'one more race' feel, which is really all you can ask for.

I only had the chance to run about a half-dozen races, but I enjoyed it as well. But I also personally had to 'get over' my disappointment with how the cars felt to drive.Naples39 wrote:I finally got a chance to play my copy last night, and enjoyed it quite a bit.

For my brief foray into "World Mode" (or whatever it's called...the campaign mode) I raced normal difficulty, all assists off, but with the flashbacks. I'll eventually turn them off, but I left them on for now, seeing as how you only get one chance at the events in this mode, and I was racing on tracks for the first time.Naples39 wrote:I'm curious about what settings people are racing on.
Last night I was using all assists and normal difficulty, but in Pro mode so no flashbacks. Not sure if I want to change things (maybe go up a difficulty but leave on assists?)
I'm running on default everything. I'm winning pretty much all the races in the GRID World mode but I wouldn't say it is easy by any means. Then again I suck at racing games.Naples39 wrote:I'm curious about what settings people are racing on.

I turned off all assists, but am still on 'Normal' difficulty and absolutely need the Flashbacks as I make too many small errors that end up really screwing me (especially before really knowing the tracks). I really like that Flashback feature since it is an option. Yeah, it's kind of cheating but I like knowing that it's there and it doesn't really help you to win or pass up others, just to not lose a ton of ground if you really screw up near the end of a race.

It's incredibly frustrating to me that you can't run a practice lap or two in Grid World mode before running the actual race. I want to leave the assists off, and make the AI challenging, but that's hard to do (for me, at least) when taking these courses blind. Doing it this way almost requires restarts and rewinds, which annoys the hell out of me.
It was fine for the first few easy races, but no so fine as the courses got more complex.

It's not quite the same thing, web, but go into 'view cars' while in the garage, and select 'test drive' from there, and you can practice all you want on any track, with any car.webdanzer wrote:It's incredibly frustrating to me that you can't run a practice lap or two in Grid World mode before running the actual race. Yeah, I was actually considering doing something like this, going to run laps in another mode after seeing what was coming up in Grid World. Silly that it needs to be an extra couple of steps like that, but I may be able to tolerate it as a work-around. Even DiRT let you hit the track before it counted, though, so I'm not sure why they took that out.Teal wrote:

They took it out to give meaning to the rewinds. They have less meaning if you could just practice to your hearts content and then run the race. I think they were going for a risk/reward thing with the rewinds and this was a way of adding to that feeling of risk/reward. I could be completely talking out of my ass though so who knows?webdanzer wrote:Even DiRT let you hit the track before it counted, though, so I'm not sure why they took that out.
I am a patient boy.
I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait.
My time is water down a drain.

You can do what Teal said and use Test Drive feature to drive all alone on a track. And you can also back out of GRID World mode, then go into Race Day mode in order to practice racing against a full grid of CPU cars (and get extra Reputation points on the side to boot).

No, I think you are exactly right!ScoopBrady wrote:They took it out to give meaning to the rewinds. They have less meaning if you could just practice to your hearts content and then run the race. I have the PC version and have played on Normal with all assists so far. But I'm going to turn Stability Control off after a poster on Eurogamer suggested it would make the cars feel more weightier and less skittish.Naples39 wrote:I'm curious about what settings people are racing on.

I turned of all assists myself last night and continue to use pro mode on normal. Took me some time to adjust, but with assists off it's just a matter of having some touch on the brakes and gas.
Right now I'm pretty satisfied with the difficulty, but that could be subject to change if I start winning a lot of races (or losing a bunch). I'm much better at some disciplines than others.

I am not playing a ton, but I am still liking the game more the more I play it. I can easily say I am very disappointed in what it is not; basically the lack of tire wear, fuel consumption, pit stops, online practice and quali sessions, etc. make it not the kind of racer that would allow me to do the 1/2 hour races I really loved in the last two ToCAs.
However, for what it is, I think it is really, really good. Web, I agree that the lack of an obvious practice mode is lame, but by the same token, so far every race I've done is, like, three laps and I am starting near the back. That's more like Madden on 2 minute quarters (or even some kind of 'score two touchdowns in the final four minutes' challenge deal) than it is a realistic game with 65 plays per team, you know? I think they took out practice mode, or at least hid it in the test drive feature, in order to force players to concentrate on the racing.
In ToCA games, or back when I played F1 games, I could easily get stuck running dozens of practice laps, doing it over and over. But that's not racing, and it's clear they really wanted to emphasize the competitive racing in this game above all else. It seems to me so far that the AI cars tend to drive in packs, rather than getting overly spread out. Maybe there is some shady catch-up logic going on or something, but it certainly adds to the fun of racing when you are behind two or three cars that are battling for position, and you know one good move on a corner could gain you a couple of places. And again, the races are super short sprints anyway.
Online, I think the thing is full of missed opportunities, which is certainly disappointing. But in the little I've done so far, the pure action of the actual racing is damn fun. Even though I suck pretty badly, it's lots of fun for me to try to get better. And stuff like that incident where Terry flew over my head upside down in some kind of GT cars is just about worth the price of admission right there. Offline, the AI is really good and fun to race with. Maybe not the best racers in the universe, but fun to race with. The Prince of Persia deal is actually something I really like, too, especially as I struggle to learn the weird USA tracks. While I'm bummed that we can't really do the 1/2 hour races and such, I really look forward to doing a lot of online racing with this thing. Monday nights are probably best for me for that, until the NFL season starts.

Pretty good stuff, there, zepp. We talked about doing some 50 lappers online sometime in the future (you can do that, y'know)...maybe you'd be up for that?Zeppo wrote:I am not playing a ton, but I am still liking the game more the more I play it. Feanor (or anyone else with the PC version), I have the PC version too and could you offer some tips on the "advanced" setup to make driving with a controller less twitchy? I can't seem to find the right combination of settings. How would I set the "linearity" and the "steering saturation" to make it smooth to control with a controller?Feanor wrote:

Also, anyone who has played both the PC and the 360 version....are they identical?
BTW, there is a patch for the PC version (1.1)
