RIP J.J. Jackson

Post by pk500 »

Fellas:

The name in the subject line may mean little to those of you younger than 30, but those of us in our mid- to late-30s and older probably spent a lot of time with J.J. Jackson, who died Wednesday in Los Angeles of a heart attack in 62.

J.J. Jackson was one of the original MTV VJ's when the network debuted in 1981. I was 16, and damn, did I spend a lot of time watching those "cool new things" called videos.

Triple J was a friendly face to me on TV during the adolescent years, which are a pretty f*cked up -- confusing, at the least -- time in most people's lives.

Godspeed, JJ.

Take care,
PK

P.S.: Bonus question -- name the other original MTV VJ's.

Only one mattered to me ... Martha Quinn

I had many "interesting" dreams in high school involving Martha Quinn.

Very good!

Martha Quinn = Martha Quinn
Skinny white guy = Alan Hunter
White guy with perm = Mark Goodman
Blond fluzie = Nina Blackwood

We have a winner!

Take care,
PK

Paul, I know that I'm speaking for the whole forum when I say that we are glad you figured out that confusion and ended up going the female route! :)

Don't know if anyone cares, but he was still on the radio out here in L.A.....94.7 (a new age jazz station). I remember those MTV years well.

Yeah, I saw that last night. Was thinking that you know you're getting old when the MTV VJ's start disappearing. Those were the good old days of MTV. Watched it all the time, then once the late 80s/early 90s hit, its programming went south (i.e., turning away from videos). The one "original" program from the 80s I did like was the Pete Zaremba (of The Fleshtones) hosted "I.R.S's The Cutting Edge." My love for alternative music was fostered by that program. Great show and great label (IRS).

Yeah, MTV is awful now. Simply dreadful. There's not one show worth spending four seconds with except for "Jackass" re-runs.

MTV 2 is like MTV was 20 years ago -- music videos and music shows.

I really liked "120 Minutes" and "Headbangers' Ball" during MTV's heyday.

Take care,
PK

Damn, I remember all those VJs, I was about 23 when MTV came on the air. I had no idea JJ Jackson died though and no idea he was in his 60s. WOW!

On another note, Nina Blackwood...wherever you are right now...I'd still hit it!

Nina Blackwood played a hooker in Vice Squad. The ho got out of line, so 'Ramrod' messed her up good with a 'pimpstick'

Martha Quinn, the theme of the great Mojo Nixon song, Stuffin Martha's Muffin, I wanted that chick badly. 'Triple J' will be.....yeah.
