Sports still owes me money for doing that 'BREAKING NEWS' thing on SR. Funny how now all the major news organizations use that style now (CNN, FOX, MSNBC). I guess I was ahead of my time.

Most of the stories I posted were true life experiences while some were not. I think another true life experience that a lot of ppl liked was when I was a kid and a neighbor kid of my s*** all over my house. It's probably out there in the archives. (For the record : The Montreal incident was not true).

I'm still around, but I'm pretty much just in lurker mode now. At the time of SR's heyday, I was just out of college with plenty of free time to game and talk about gaming. Now I'm married with a child, and rarely gaming at all with pretty much no desire to talk about gaming. Although I do still like to read about it just about as much as I did before, which makes visiting the DSP forums a part of my daily routine.

I do miss seeing Cincy Kid and Vinny-B posting here, it isn't the same without them around. I'd like to just know that they are doing well if nothing else. Just to bring up some more old chat memories that haven't been mentioned, nothing beats Florida Gators and Droog going to you for advice on how to get girls Fletch, the pms they would send you that you would post for me were awesome. I loved the beginning of XBL also, gaming will never be as fun as it was when the MotoGP demo was out. And my favorite online gaming moment still has to be the first time I played SOCOM online with Neckthai and BBReBozo and hearing Neck talk for the first time. There was a moment of stunned silence, followed by Bozo saying "I can't decide who you sound more like Neck, Mary-Kate or Ashley Olsen". Actually, almost all of my favorite online gaming moments involved Neckthai somehow. Plus he shared the first pic of PK over chat, gaming in nothing but his underwear in a room full of guys in Indy I assume. I think I might have actually been sworn to secrecy about seeing that though, oops.

I will claim responsibility for the fall of SR. I think the fake feud between Bozo and I was the beginning of the end. To keep it going and believable, we had to enlist the help of Matt to verify some of the stuff we were saying, and I think he got the shenanigans bug after that. We knew while we were planning each post over chat that things would never be the same in the forum, especially after everyone bought everything we were saying as truth, no matter how outlandish the posts got. We didn't set out to hurt any feelings (although from the PMs I got for a long time afterwards I know we did), but damn that was fun while it was happening.

I did make some good friends from the site though that I have kept in regular contact with since then. In fact, both Bozo and Siam actually sent flowers to the hospital when my son was born, complete with a card written in chatspeak. I am pissed though that I didn't get the chance to out Inuyasha as Siam tonight. It could have been my last Skull and Games reveal, and payback for him emailing me a Wire spoiler a couple of months ago.

And where the f*** is SFZ?

some other classis SR memories I have:

siam007 telling me HipE worked in the University of Iowa library lol
siam007 sending the most insane and R rated pictures out in chat
When matt came into chat as Sprots
First pic I saw of pk = stuff of legends

OMFG! LOL! I remember when these pictures were posted of the SR Gala. MattK (or was it PK) was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO JEALOUS he wasn't invited he bitched about it in the forums for days.

And VinnyB was always like 'OMG WHAT IS SKULL AND GAMES' Please tell me!? Like every other private email or chat session he wanted desperately to know what was skull and games.

My favorite memories have to do with EPIC battles on Ghost Recon, and GR:IT. Full rooms, lots of PK ranting...priceless stuff. Was it here or at SR where we had the beginning of 'f*** you, Carl!!!'?

Four of my most enjoyable experiences of console gaming revolved around the early days of XBL with DSP:

1. The "F*CK YOU, CARL!" episode with Carl's father in Ghost Recon
2. The "Symmons Plains soap opera" with TOCA 3
3. "Passing the F*CKING PUCK, Jack!" Dick Fain and "33 1/3" with NHL Rivals
4. BBReBozo and I pumping at least five clips each into Neckthai's dead carcass in a co-op session of Rainbow Six 3

I think that was here, but right after we switched over. Funniest XBL moment ever for me.

I think the reason I look back on the SR time so fondly is because I had the freedom to think about a lot of inconsequential stuff. It was fun to take the time to rant about AI or write Medal of Honor-related haikus.

It's interesting...A lot of talk here about how fun and entertaining the 'ol SR days were, yet those days were based on a bunch of BS posts, threads and members. That type of behavior would be stomped out immediately here.

Have we created a boring community here...?

You can recall things fondly without wanting to go back to them or re-create them. I loved high-school, but no way in hell would I go back. A lot of us are different people now, too.

And DSP is more than just the place SR cast-offs ended up, and the cast-offs certainly didn't 'create' DSP. Jared's site was up and running well before SR folded, and it always had its differences from SR.

A lot of the entertainment from the SR days were from the complete and total lack of moderation. It did make for some entertaining posts, but I think it helped contribute to the downfall of the place as it started to get dominated by the crazies.

And I do think that I'm fairly lenient here...though I'm a bit biased

. Knowing what happened at SR, I try to find the line between allowing a lot and stopping a free-for-all atmosphere. I have no idea if it works, but it's what I'm going for.

As for DSP's history...it is a long one. I think the site was started by Frank Eva and John Cauthen back in 1997. I didn't join up until around 2000 I think, and didn't own the site until 2002 (or sometime around there). The character of the site really starts with JohnC...he wrote excellent reviews and his work (as well as Randy, Brian, and others) brought me to it.

I thought the most entertaining days of SR were before things fell apart when the game reviews cut through the BS in a way that was informative, entertaining and often hilarious.

This site has its own personality, but it is still a great site to find out what people think of specific games - sports and otherwise. And because a lot of people have been here for a long time and made their opinions known, it is pretty easy to read a game thread and cut to the chase pretty quickly.

It is kind of ironic to me how many gamers have changed as their lives have changed and yet the games don't seem to catch up with those changes. It seems like game companies understand that a lot of gamers appreciate 'pick up and play' games yet they don't understand the importance of in-game saves in sports games.

In my mind it is like the movie industry giving their customers 24 hours to watch a downloaded movie. For the same reason gamers want saves, movie watchers need extra days. Life is full of interruptions - and those of you with kids experience those interruptions exponentially. It just seems like it would make good business sense to recognize that and work with the audience, but what do I know?

Good point about John Cauthen. I used to love to read his 'digital dynasties'. Didn't he always play as Duke? I seem to remember a lot of 10 loss football seasons in his chronicles.

Hey Jared, remember that SR NCAA 2004 Football League? Remember you were beating everyone in the league like 44-0 with the Florida Gators and would run the same passing plays like 10x. Then you came up against me and I was up big on you and you came back, and then I beat you in the final minute. I think I was the only person who beat you in that league for that whole year. Remember that?

As for SR, it did have a lot of good content. Also, I think the game impressions in the posts were the best since nobody held back. I agree back then we probably had more time to game in our lives and it was more than a hobby than it probably is today. Also remember back then SR was going up against OS where the mods at OS went overboard on the admin thing while SR was completely open. I think that was one big selling point with SR where you could pretty much say anything without getting banned.
