John Cauthen, an original DSP guy, is underwhelmed with GRID based on his impressions at OS:

John is a sim-head, which should be noted. Game apparently has a nice damage model, though.
Take care,
PK

Put in a few races on each game type. Thoughts:
-Graphics and presentation are really top-notch
-I knew this game was going to be less sim than previous releases by Codies, but even with that expectation it's even more arcadey than I thought it would be.
-DESPISE the drift mode, but I hate drift stuff in general so no surprise there. It's just cheesy IMO trying to get a 'score' instead of racing. Chances are you know ahead of time if you're going to like this mode or not
-With all driving aids on it is an extremely forgiving game. It's essentially impossible to lock up your tires or slide out even if you slam on the brakes mid-turn. Likewise for the flooring it mid-turn.
-I tried turning all of aids, and it makes the driving a bit more satisfying. Still not like Forza, but to me rewarding. The thing is, driving becomes much more difficult with the aids off but the CPU remains exactly the same. Thus far, on normal difficult with aids on=easy win. Normal difficulty with aids off=dead last. Gonna have to find a happy medium in there somewhere.
-Given those concerns I just mentioned about difficulty with the aids off, I could see this being a lot of fun online with the aids off as a fairly forgiving sim racer.
-Damage model is graphically impressive, and effects driving condition. Last race I had non-terminal damage, but my car was pulling so hard to one direction it was essentially impossible to race it so I just quit.
Overall, it's simply more arcadey than I thought it would be. I guess I expected the game to handle on default/aids-on to handle as it currently does with aids-off (thus leaving aids-off driving to close to Forza). I definitely have to re-adjust my expectations and see if I can take it for what it is, because it's pretty far from the sim I hoped for back when this was announced.

I don't know why I like Forza...'cuz I usually like games of GRID's caliber. I'm not a simwhore, in fact am just the opposite. I don't need to know how much camber to adjust, and all that crap...I just want to race. GRID will give me that, as Burnout has done, with a touch of reality, which is all I ask for in a game like this. I just don't want to waste an inordinate amount of time tweaking setups, running lines, and all that. Just put me in a car, and let me go.
So that's why I personally like the demo...except I don't really like the Japanese-y drift junk either...

I'm with you on tweaking Teal. I hate it. I was kinda hoping it would be like past Colin McRae games where tweaking is very simplified, yet the handling is sim-oriented.
Codies have chosen to go a less sim-route, probably to move more copies, so now it's just a question of how much I like their new direction. It definitely feels like Dirt on asphault, so based on what I've seen, I would think everyone who loved that game will like Grid.

I much prefer sim racing, especially on my PC. But I'm cetainly not adverse to a decent racing game on my console.
I had no intention of getting GRID upon hearing about it, but I must admit I thought the demo was a lot of fun, even the drift race. I think the AI was a bit goofy, as they kept slamming into me, but overall it was fun. Not a must buy for me, but certainly on the radar.

I am the same way. I enjoy the thrill of beating other cars in the actual race. Not adjusting this and tweaking that. If GRID is DiRT on asphalt, then I will love it. I am downloading the demo right now. Burnout was lots of fun too, but like all the other Burnout games, the fun doesn't last past a month or so.tealboy03 wrote:I don't know why I like Forza...'cuz I usually like games of GRID's caliber. But they are perfect rental games.
I'm sure the Dual Shock controller will help, but I feel like the PS3 trigger buttons are pretty subpar when it comes to gas/brake controls in driving games. First of all, the way they are shaped, it's a bit hard to keep a good grip. As well, the sensitivity doesn't seem as dead on as the 360's.
Anyways, GRID still looks like a purchase for me, but I'm a bit worried that I'll have the same issues with the controller that I had with F1.

Count me in...Leebo33 wrote:I feel the same way as Teal, Scoop, and Jack. I can't wait to try out the demo and I imagine GRID will be a day one purchase for me.
True...Very true...fanatic wrote:I'm sure the Dual Shock controller will help, but I feel like the PS3 trigger buttons are pretty subpar when it comes to gas/brake controls in driving games. Listen, it's ok for me to bash the controller because I own a PS3...tealboy03 wrote:Oh, I hate the PS3's triggers...feel like my fingers will slip off of them any second. They feel tremendously inaccurate...glad I don't have to worry about that!

Seriously though, maybe a wheel is the way to go. Does anybody know if the GT5 wheel is supported in GRID?
I tried the demo and I liked some aspects of it and did not like others. I agree with those that have become tired of 'tweaking' racing games but the funny thing is that PGR4 was not a tweaking game at all and no one paid any attention to it here.
GRID felt a teeny bit like destruction derby on tracks. A lot of grouping and bumping. Graphics are nice, but I am just not sure how to feel about it. Is it the same basic structure/progress concept as DiRT?

On another note, I see no reason why GRID wouldn't support the GT5 wheel-it'd be nuts not too...

Y'know, once I calmed down and starting braking in the corners, taking the right lines, I didn't do alot of the bumping and stuff anymore, and the AI didn't, either. The two actual race modes have been alot of fun since I quit treating it like Burnout...Spooky wrote:I tried the demo and I liked some aspects of it and did not like others.
