Yeah, iPods are REALLY cool ! I was very close to getting the 40 gig one, however, there is really no way for me to use it in my car and that is the main place I listen to music. Bummer. I have the stock stereo (can't replace it casue it is a navigation system) and do not have a tape deck. I could have a tape deck added for $200 but I still think the quality degrades too much this way. The FM thing is NOT an option for me as the quality turns to sh*t.
If anyone knows of a way I can inexpensively get the iPod to work with my stock system with little or no loss in quality, PLEASE let me know !!!!

You might ask the question at an iPod forum. There are all kinds of accessories, like gadgets that offer a Bluetooth link and several aftermarket devices to connect iPods to car stereos (tho these are not cheap).
I hear a lot of people are finding ways to connect to the Aux In of a lot of car stereos by having installers put a jack in the glove compartment or something.
Some cheap car stereos actually have jacks on the front dash.

Hey i got the iTrip for my iPod, and while the fidelity is not nearly as good as hard-wired in to my stereo at home, it is not bad at all. In fact I've been impressed. At first I tired a Belkin product, because it has it's own bettery and I was worried about power conumption and transmission power. But the sound of the Belkin was terrible. Went back and got the iTrip, and the quality is hard to believe.Spooky wrote:Yeah, iPods are REALLY cool ! And this is form a guy who won't rip MP-3s at any less than 160kbps, and I can hear the difference, and the iTrip was good enough for me, especially considering all the bonuses of iPod in the car. There are issues with reception in some cars, some cars seem better than others. And in and around NYC it is tough to find an empty frequency, but I say give the iTrip a shot, you can likely take it back if you don't like it. Otherwise investigate an aux-in solution, as that would clearly be the best. But stay away from the Belkin products in this area, I just found them to be not nearly as good.
And by the way fletcher, be wary of getting rid of all your CDs.
I've had more than one acquaintance either lose their iPod, have their iPod stolen or fall apart, or their computer stolen or fall apart, or any manner of other horror stories. And often it is right after they finally got all their CDs on the thing and got rid of the CDs!!!!!
Just a friendly warning to not be too hasty.

I don't have any CD's that are in regular format anymore. I have over 1400 in MP3 format though...It takes up a good 45 gig on my drive along with about 150 or so CD's that I take with me in my car 50 at a time. I've basically got all of my music backed up 3 times...all in mp3 format. Just being safe.
Install in stock stereo
I have a '99 Honda Accord with a stock stereo and no tape deck (in-dash CD only). I did a complete iPod install for less than $100, with complete ease (did it in the parking lot outside the mall after buying a cable), and it sounds PERFECT.
Don't be too intimidated. A simple adaptor was all that was required to provide a standard RCA Aux in to the stereo ($50). It connects to the port on the back of the stereo that would be used for a trunk-mount CD changer. Press CD once to listen to CD, and again to switch to iPod (CD Changer).
Instructions for the disassembly of the dash etc. were readily available online, and everything went very smoothly. Highly recommended! Let me know if I can be of any help!
