Well, Caps get screwed by a stupid play by Brashear and incompetence by the officials afterward. Chris Rooney should be banned from officiating for the season for that display.

Almost looked like he was on the take.

Great game between the Caps & Pens. Very few stops, zebras let everyone play, and with all the young guns on the ice, it was the right thing to do. A heartbreaking loss eventually for WAS with 25 seconds left in the game.

How tight is the NW division? How about three teams on top with 80 points and the 'Nucks just right behind them with a game in hand. The final week will decide the positions but I wouldn't be surprised if all four teams sneak into the western conference playoff run.

Good feature on NHL trash talk:

http://www.canada.com/theprovince/news/ ... f212e2313a

What a fun game Sunday afternoon between the Oil and Chicago, won by the Oil, 6-5, in OT. Second consecutive game with an OT game-winner by Andrew Cogliano. Up-and-down action and plenty of chances since the game, as Oilers' analyst Ray Ferraro said, "won't be nominated for the Defensive Hall of Fame." :)

I know the playoffs still are a longshot, but the Oil are 6-1 in their last seven games. They're only seven points out with 13 games to play, and the kid line and fourth line are driving the team's proverbial bus right now. It could get very interesting if Stoll and Penner ever decide to start playing offense.

Finally, I think Kane has nothing on Gagner right now in the Calder race. Kane has slowed, and Gagner is averaging a point per game since Horcoff went down for the season. Gagner's only negative is -17, but he either has been placed on the Oil's No. 1 line -- usually playing against the other team's No. 1 line -- since Horcoff was hurt or is on a kid line with Nilsson and Cogliano, which isn't the strongest defensive trio.

But Toews is better than Kane and Gagner. His game is very complete. I think the Calder race comes down to Toews vs. Backstrom in Washington.

Three of the top-10 rookies in scoring this season are on the Oil -- Gagner, Cogliano and Gilbert. No wonder the last 20 games of this season are much more enjoyable than last year's post-trading deadline collapse. It's really fun to see these kids muster big effort and good results every night.

Take care,
PK

The 08-09 season will be starting in Prague. At least people know a bit more Hockey than their neighbors in London.

There's talk that the next big outdoor event will be held at the Yankee stadium featuring the Rangers and a team yet to be named. But of course the likes of NJ, NYI, Philly and WAS comes to mind.

The maddening Colie Campbell system of justice strikes again. Chris Simon stomps on a player and gets suspended. But St. Chris Pronger, who is no angel, stomps Ryan Kesler and gets no punishment:

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=231940&hubname=

What a joke. You would think the NHL would be more sensitive to stomping incidents after Zednik nearly died from an inadvertent skate cut and Anaheim lost Corey Perry to a cut tendon from a skate.

Pronger is a f*ck. And yes, I'm biased as an Oilers' fan.

When I watched that yesterday, I calmy said to myself, it's OK, he's going to get it. Pronger is a dirty player. Period. No ifs or buts, before the new NHL era, he was Mr Crosscheck in my book, I mean no one dared to be near the crease when he was around because you knew you were going to get nailed by him. The fact that he's a tall dude and have been using that excuse to his advantage when he elbowed a few players last season and the league seem to buy it...it's just pathetic. I don't see a hard nosed tall player like Z. Chara committing those types of crimes. I guess C.Campbell will need to see a broken ankle to officially start penalizing people for stomping.

'Nucks will lose M. Ohlund for the remaining of the season now, due to knee surgery, needless to say a big loss for VAN.

Spot on about Pronger, James. He's a dirty f*ck, but he gets a pass since he's a good guy off the ice and a Norris and Hart winner.

But his claim that he's tall is a joke. Plus his height had nothing to do with stomping a guy laying on the ice.

There's a more clear video of the stomping by Mr Dirty Pronger on Kesler on this page. The league hopefully will have the guts to do something, although I am not keeping my hopes too high.

That's great news. One of the hockey guys at SI just wrote a column saying how Pronger didn't do anything worthy of a suspension, so I wonder if he'll write a new column admitting he got it wrong.

If the Flyers miss the playoffs it will because of their god-awful record at home. They have the 28th best home record in the NHL - only the Kings and the Coyotes are worse. So it's a good thing that they play in Boston and in Pittsburgh this weekend.

Not nearly the 30 games suspension to C. Simon, but I am glad that the league at least took a second look at the incident.

For once I agree with Chris Simon. Maybe not the 30 games he initially got but definitely more than 8.

'Nucks win an important one against those pesky Coyotes and are in a tight three way tie for second place in the NW division. Bad news, we lose rookie M. Raymond with a knee injury after what I thought was a dirty knee on knee hit from K. Ballard. Took a closer look at Yotes' D. Carcillo and this guy is going be a tough guy for PHO for years to come.

Pretty good scrap between him and R. Rypien at the garage.

If Chris Pronger got the star treatment, what did Max Afinogenov get? He did the same thing as Pronger and Simon when he stepped on Upshall about a month after the Simon incident and received no penalty at all. The only pattern to the NHL justice system I see is that suspensions generally conform to the level of public outcry, not to what actually happened on the ice.

I hear you Naples.. Although, I doubt no one brought the Upshall incident to Campbell, it does show his lack of toughness for setting an example for the entire league that stomping is not allowed. Simon's action was premeditated while Pronger was more of a reaction stomp.

It' clear to me that Burkie had some kind of influence on Colin's decision, as I said before, eight games was not enough to fit the crime. But the playoff are coming right?

Let's hope so! I sure as hell haven't put mine away.

What a difference a season makes. Last year at this time, I was going through one of my toughest stretches as a 25-year Oil fan. Losing 18 of their last 20, a listless team with loafers like Joffrey Lupul.

This year's team skates hard every night, and the kids -- oh, the kids! -- are damn good. Gagner, Nilsson, Gilbert and Cogliano seem to do at least one thing every night that puts an ear-to-ear grin on my face.

Still, if the Oil makes the playoffs, or even if it falls just short, I'll look back to a very minor transaction Feb. 1 by Kevin Lowe as the turning point: Getting Curtis Glencross from Columbus for Dick Tarnstrom.

Glencross has been a gem for the Oil, turning the fourth line into a potent offensive and defensive tool instead of just a time-filler. Glencross hustles constantly, is clever with the puck and hits. He also has made his linemates, Zack Stortini and Kyle Brodziak, much better players.

It's amazing that a line of three kids younger than 21 -- Cogliano, Gagner and Nilsson -- and a line of what most teams considered scrap metal -- Brodziak, Glencross and Stortini -- have carried this team during this streak, along with fine goaltending from Garon and Roli.

It just blows my mind that the Oil is playing this well considering that the first line of Hemsky, Stoll and Penner has been terrible, as Hemsky and Penner are lost without the creativity, skill, grit, solid defense and selflessness of Horcoff.

GO OIL!

Take care,
PK

Thursday night at the garage will decide the fate of the Oils I think. It'll be a war based on the thriller a month ago or so. Win and you'll be all of the sudden three points away from the eight spot, lose and you'll be running out of time and games.

However I do like how the kids are shaping up in EDM but more important is the rejuvenation of D. Roloson lately although he did let in a couple of soft ones yesterday.

I hope they throw the book at him. I'm all for goalie fights, but when the other goalie CLEARLY didn't want anything to do with the brawl, and Roy basically ambushed him (as much as you can get ambushed from the front anyway)......

The Remparts were getting hammered 11-1, so I think Roy was just trying to save some face.......

A classless act, childish. What bugged me is that at the end he goes out raising his left arm as in 'I won my fight' that the other goalie had no interest in getting involved... you puke.
