Mario Kart Wii
Any Wii owners looking forward to this? To be honest, I wasn't until I saw this:
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/30941.html
Supposedly, it has 12 player online, ability to upload and download time trial ghosts worldwide, stat tracking, etc. Driving with the wheel actually looks fun. According to Gamestop, it's coming out in April.

I'm still sketical. That video doesn't show any of the characters power-sliding, which has always been the core of the game since it went 3D. I wonder how sliding will work with those wheels.
The other big question the balance between driving ability and pure shooting mayhem. For me, this balance has been skewed way too far towards the shooting end in the GC Mario Kart, and only time will tell about this version.

That makes two of us. I'll wait and see with this one though--it may be as good as the N64 version, which would be acceptable to me for the multiplayer.mobiggins wrote:Many Mario Kart games have come and gone, but the original is still the most balanced, I think. I happen to like it the most to this day.
I never played the GC nor the DS one, but I tend to agree with you guys in terms of the original SNES game and the N64 one. I did learn to love the N64 one, particularly in MP situations, but also overall. Some of the track design was outstanding.Naples39 wrote:That makes two of us. Although I learned to love the snaking in N64 with the boost it gave, I always preferred the seemingly hyperbolic curve of acceleration you could achieve with powersliding in the original. Taking Kong or Bowser in an MP race and lagging behind for a lap and a half, but by nailing every corner in the deceleration-free powerslide, you would end up amassing so much speed by the end of the race, and of course being a big guy, you would blast through the opponents, that the glee was irresistable. That was great stuff. It was far from easy to do it well, because you had to be just about perfect, but when you got it right, those big guys were unstoppable.
Is this the game, the online MP special, that will push me to get a Wii? If there's any real chance of a 12-man room of DSPers going nuts in what is sure to be a superbly balanced game, that just could be enough. Of course, once I get one, I'll have no time for MK, because I'll be too busy with the Zelda and the Metroid.
A Mario Kart hands-on;

Sounds like a fun and well-thought out feature. Racing around with a bunch of Miis could be pretty hilarious, and frankly the kind of thing I have been waiting for since creating my Mii on the first day I got the system.2) You can use your Miis as playable characters. And get this: the physical size of your Mii will determine the race class of your character - light, medium, heavy!
Sounds good. I think.4) They’ve slightly tweaked the control scheme for power drifts, and it’s absolute genius. You careen round corners for as long as you can; do it for long enough and you get either a turbo boost or a double turbo boost.
Um, was that sarcasm? Taking it at face value, that pretty much concerns my worst fears about the game. I mean you should be able to shoot people and make dramatic comebacks, but last to first in one lap thanks to powerups? That isn't balanced at all.9) Multiplayer mode is perfectly balanced, as you’d expect. You can spend the whole race lagging in 12th place, and then a few well placed power-ups in the last lap will put you right up in front.
Hopefully this works well. This will probably make or break the game for me.11) The online version looks like it’ll be a winner too. You can create a playroom and invite your friends into it, or you can play random strangers around the world. There’s a giant globe (like on the weather/news channels) with location markers for your opponents.
Not surprising really. Oh well.13) Finally, the Wii Wheel. This was the most disappointing thing, simply because it’s absolutely crap. Though Nintendo valiantly tried to convince us otherwise, it’s a silly gimmick that detracts from the quality of the game. Fortunately, you can play using the standard Wiimote and Nunchuk, or you can bust out the GameCube pad and be proper old school.
Another predictable, but weak feature. Guess I've been spoiled by Xbox live.EDIT: Something else we forgot to mention is the chatroom function in the online play. Nintendo haven’t given players the freedom to chat freely, but players can choose from a selection of phrases that best fits their mood. “I’m happy”, “I’m sad”, that kind of thing.
Was in Best Buy last week returning a DSL modem that just wouldn't talk to my wireless router and getting a wireless modem. I saw someone holding a Wii. They just got a batch in, so I grabbed one for the wife. It took until last night to hook it up - just didn't have a driving interest to play it.Sudz wrote:still can't find a freaking wiiii
So any suggestions for Wii games for a 38 year old woman? She got a kick out of Wii Sports.

First review I've seen. Looking good!
This may persuade me to wait for the full version of Gran Turismo later this year.

Anyone else get this today? I picked it up this morning and only got about an hour of single player in so far but this game is very, very fun. The steering wheel works really well, most impressive.
Gonna play more after the hockey game but my early impressions are that this is now my favorite game for the Wii so far.

IGN video review:

Sounds like a good game, but I'm still a little torn about whether or not to get it. I do tend to play a lot of single-player and the fact 150cc is unfairly hard could be completely maddening.

Carnival Games might be something she would like.
Rock Band comes out for the Wii at the end of June.
I have never played these but Big Brain Academy usually is recommended. Don't know about the Wii Version.
