MLB '08 news and info

I am really trying to warrant a purchase of a PS3 other than just because of MLB08.
We have a 360, which is mostly played by my 14 yr old son. I enjoy NBA2K and College 2K, but am not into any other games. I have really enjoyed the last few MLB's on the PS2 and know that I would love it on the PS3 on my 50 inch Samsung.
Very tempting, to say the least.

I'm in the same boat as you. I did play mlb the show 07 last year on ps3 at a show, and I think I only spent an hour with it, but that hour convinced me that it was the best baseball game out last year. But I am hesitant to buy a new system just for one game. But on the other hand, I got all this xmas money saved up, I can get it for half. I like MLB 2k, but the hitting model just sucks. I like the show's approach which is more like High Heat.
added : I went to the TRU site and it looks like they sell a 20gb ps3 for 299.99. Is that true? I never have seen that in the store. Anyone have info on that? I know the one that costs the most is the only one that plays ps2 games right?
Also, what kind of cables do I need to hook it up to my hdtv?
Inuyasha,
You need HDMI cables.
I was going to get a Sony 52" HDTV (the one I really want is $3200), but I've now come to realize I can get a very nice 47" HDTV that displays 1080p, a new entertainment system, and a ps3 for under $2000.
That's what I'm going to do very soon, probably when we get our taxes back. I just can't see paying $3000+ for a TV.
In fact, the enterainment system I want has 4 shelves just for gaming consoles - which would fit my 360, wii, and ps3, and ps2.. not to mention a place for a new Dish Network HD DVR. Talk about TV/Gaming bliss!!!

Maybe wait until MLB 2k8 comes out to see if that's enough to get your baseball fix if you don't want to spend the money.Pete wrote:I am really trying to warrant a purchase of a PS3 other than just because of MLB08.

I guess I may as well add my name to the boat. The 360 satisfies all of my gaming needs except baseball. We are however building a home theater with 1080p projector and we shouldnt have a setup like that without a blue ray player right? At 400 bucks it sounds like a pretty good blueray player. And the baseball is an added bonus.

The Blu Ray player is top notch. You will love HD movies. Plus, it upconverts all of your regular DVDsMUTTS wrote:I guess I may as well add my name to the boat. Normally I would say the getting the PS3 as a blu-ray player would be great, but if you really are spending a fortune to build a nice home theater, I would probably go with a dedicated blu-ray player instead. If you can afford the extra expense, you should get a high end stand along player.MUTTS wrote:I guess I may as well add my name to the boat. The 360 satisfies all of my gaming needs except baseball. I imagine you'll be using a logitech harmony universal remote, or something like that. When you want to watch a blu-ray movie, it will be nice to be able to turn on/off your blu ray player with just one remote, something you can't do with the PS3. YOu can buy the blu wave IR remote for the PS3, but it won't be able to turn the system on or off. That's my biggest gripe with the PS3, no built in IR sensor.
Just something to consider.

Wow I totally disagree with this statement I have a PS3 and a stand alone Blu Ray player from Sony which cost probably a $100 more then the PS3. If I could I would trade it in for a PS3 in a second.LAking wrote:Normally I would say the getting the PS3 as a blu-ray player would be great, but if you really are spending a fortune to build a nice home theater, I would probably go with a dedicated blu-ray player instead. The 1st gen stand alone boot really slowly, you have to get updates either mailed to you or download and burn them off the internet and because it has no Ethernet port will not be Blu Ray 2.0 compatible or at least that is my understanding. Where as my PS3 as a player is faster then my stand alone and is updated with every PS3 update.
For the record I also have a 1080P projector in my theater room and I consider the PS3 the "show off" item of my set up.

The biggest advantage is that the PS3 should be the most updated BR player in the market via firmwares.dbdynsty25 wrote:Yeah, getting the BluWave IR remote is FINE...so what, you have to press the button to turn it on or off. There are many advantages, as Danimal mentioned, to the PS3 as the Blu-Ray player.

Well well well....and here I thought you were content with MLB 2K8 or MLB Power Pros? We all know the pull of this game is huge! Hope you make the switch in any case. We'd have to get some online games in.MizzouRah wrote:Inuyasha,

That's why I suggested getting a high end player. If i'm not mistaken all the new blu-ray players come with ethernet ports now so updates shouldn't be a problem.Danimal wrote:Wow I totally disagree with this statement I have a PS3 and a stand alone Blu Ray player from Sony which cost probably a $100 more then the PS3. Maybe I'm different but If I'm going all out on a really nice home theater setup I just prefer stand alone. I have a PS3 and use it as my main DVD/BD player now but I just don't feel comfortable doing it. It's a great player but i don't like the fact that I'm putting so much use into it. It's also annoying that every time i'm done watching a movie I have to walk up the to the TV just to turn it off. Add that to the fact that to turn off the PS3 you have hold down the power button for a few seconds instead of just tapping it. I've gotten very used to the harmony remote lifestyle over the past 4 or so years

Maybe the best solution is to use the PS3 as the main player for now and when prices finally drop to truly consumer friendly levels and the technology has improved enough, you can get a standalone player. That's probably what I'll be doing.
EDIT: I didn't see any BD players with ethernet ports on amazon. Do they not exist yet or does amazon just not sell the high end players?

Hopefully it will become SCEA tradition to release a demo of the Show every year on the day pitchers and catchers report. Just another sign (as if we needed any more) that these guys get things right when it comes to baseball.lexbur wrote:Happy Pitchers and Catchers Reporting Day everybody!!!![]()

Yeah, I love the Bluwave. I usually have to insert a new Blu-Ray to watch so that turns on the PS3. Then I have to eject the disk to send back to Netflix so I just turn the PS3 off while I'm there.Diablo25 wrote:What Danimal/DB saiddbdynsty25 wrote:Yeah, getting the BluWave IR remote is FINE...so what, you have to press the button to turn it on or off. I am.. it's not just for The Show, it's mostly for the BR player and it fits into what I had planned on budgeting for just a TV. Can't wait to get that $1600 check from the gov't in May or whenever it's supposed to mail out.sportdan30 wrote: Well well well....and here I thought you were content with MLB 2K8 or MLB Power Pros? It will be nice not to be limited in games by only having one system or the other.
