Mixed reviews from 360 and PS3 owners have me rethinking a purchase. I'm a heck of a lot pickier these days with my new game purchases, considering you can buy the game used for probably $20 less in a couple weeks.jLp vAkEr0 wrote:Any PS3 buyers?
Right now, I'm definitely picking up Hot Shots: Out of Bounds on day one along with MLB The Show, and most likely a PS3 rumble controller. That's a good amount coin to spend. Plus, GTA IV has a release day of 4/29/08 now. That's another day one purchase.

Same here. The only day 1 purchase for me is The Show. Still trying to get NBA 2k8 cheap but can't find it.sportdan30 wrote:Mixed reviews from 360 and PS3 owners have me rethinking a purchase. Not to continue with the thread jack, but I did pick up CH 2K8 for $40 @ BB a few days ago. I feel much better knowning I saved $20 off the regular retail price. Excellent game post-patch by the way.
I guess it all depends on the individual what is considered a day one purchase. Games like Mass Effect, Bioshock, Unchartered, MLB The Show, etc are worthy day one purchases IMO, if only for the sole fact that you're supporting new and creative style games (maybe not MLB but it's just so good and has a lot of replay value). I'm sure Burnout Paradise is a very good game, but it's a game I know I will shelve after a couple weeks. I'd feel much better buying the game for $30 a month from now.

NBA 2K8 is $32.99 @ circuit city this week. I picked up 360 version in store, but the deal is online too.
I think you guys are missing out, but I understand the price thing. But don't hold out because you think it's not 'Burnout' enough, or fun enough, or engaging enough...because it is. I've already secured some killer rides, made some insane jumps, and taken out several online opponents.
The races are a breath of fresh air. 'Here's where you are, here's where you need to get to first-GO!' No single track, no circuits (that I've seen yet), just get from here to there by whatever route you'd like. I love that! Yeah, it can get confusing, and you can get a little lost every once in awhile, but it's not as confusing nor as frustrating as one might expect. As far as no instant 'restart'...there are 120 different events. I just go to the closest intersection and choose the next one...no biggie.
I wish more of you would dig into this, it really is alot of fun, and worth the money, IMO...

I'll be brief because I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but I'm not really digging it so far. Not that it's bad, but it's not especially fun for me. To me, it gets very 'samey' awfully fast. It's a big city, but much of it feels the same. That goes for a lot of the events, too. Races all tend to be similiar, marked man, road rage, etc. Same with the Showtime stuff; fun to roll your car around the streets maybe one or two times for me, then...meh. The game still gives you a great sense of speed, though.
Now a big disclaimer is that these is all single player impressions. I can see how it could be perhaps more fun with obscenity-laced Live mates after multiple beers.
I'll be bringing my rental back without regrets or a plan to purchase, but I'll take a look again when it hits $30, as some of you others have said.

I'm with ya Web...after the fascination of the crashes wore off, it's fairly bland. It really is only entertaining to drive around and look for cool shortcuts and/or ramps. So we'll see...after two hours, I'm very glad I gamefly'd it. Usually I buy the Burnout games but the demo soured me on the franchise. So here we are. Hopefully it will get more entertaining over the weekend.
Well, that's too bad. I'm enjoying it quite alot. To me, it's no less Burnout than all the others; in fact, outside of Crash mode, it's more. But I like just driving around, engaging in the occasional race or road rage, hopping online every now and then for some mindless, sometimes hilarious fun. I'm only on my 8th car, and the speed is so frickin' ridiculous already that I can't imagine the upper tier cars
.
Online is seriously a blast...you should give it a try with friends before giving up on it. Lemme know...I'm always up for a game...

I agree with you guys i had a blast last night driving around the city. It can get a little confusing because of the speed and blowing past some of the streets. I think once you get more familiar with the game it shouldn't be a problem. Yes this game would be great for a DPS nightLeadfoot5 wrote:Teal and I tooled around for a bit tonight and we both agree that this would be a great game for a DSP night. Well I have mixed feelings about this game but overall I am glad I own it.
It has an addicting quality to where I just want to do one more race or try to beat one more street record, etc...
My issues with the game are the lack or directional arrows, lack of being able to pinpoint a location on the map and get directions there, taking wrong turns and getting stuck on roads where there are not turn offs for miles and the lack of diversity of the city (there are a ton of areas but I wish there was more difference in locals of day/night/weather or something). Things can get REALLY frustrating when in a long race with checkpoints and one wrong turn can cost you miles of backtracking.
Freeburn is ho-hum unless with a creative group or friends. Racing online is fun and can be very competitive. The game really shines online when you start doing the multiplayer objectives with anywhere from 2-8 players. I love the fact that there are 50 different objectives per # of racers. Fun stuff.
Just exploring this intricate city is a good time and finding super jumps and Burnout billboards to smash through is addicting and rewarding.
I also do not find the lack of being able to start a race or event over nearly as frustrating as some of the reviewers. Any time you finish and don't win, the is bound to be a new challenge right at the spot you finished at so you are constantly trying new events.
I think that the developers really wanted to force players to explore and memorize the city and after hours and hours of playing, be able to navigate from familiarization of the areas and street names, but I don't think that will appeal to the majority of players. At least give me the option to turn on or off a directional arrow or something. Also, I am a bit disappointed in the lack of online modes. Sure there is a lot to do in Freeburn but it is not structured. I wish there were a couple more modes like Marked Man and /or Tag/Takedown for online play. I am really surprised these were left out.
Fun, fun and addicting game, but it is missing some important aspects that keep it from being truly exceptional overall.

Spooky, you know that the street signs flash when you are supposed to turn, right? It's not a directional arrow per se, but it works as such.
I disagree that there is always a new challenge at the end of every race. The western area usually only has a couple, and you can use them up quickly. One of them (observatory or wind farm, not sure which...or maybe even both) has very few you can try from there.
Also, the burning laps -which are probably my favorite part of the game- are really burned by a lack of a restart option.
I think it's an okay game, but I wish things were more varied. Each race feels like the last, each road rage feels like the last, etc.

Yeah, I know. It is just too hard for me to pick those up accurately and they show up too quickly. The biggest issue is that the streets are not really a grid and there are WAY too many times when you get on a street that takes you a totally wrong direction and there is not easy way to cut back over.webdanzer wrote:Spooky, you know that the street signs flash when you are supposed to turn, right? will do. Just played a couple of hours with mix, and had a blast doing challenges. Had one where you had to jump a big ramp, and barrel roll through a plane fuselage-musta taken me 3 dozen tries!Millennium wrote:teal -

I like the game a lot. Has a bit of a Crazy Taxi vibe.
Forgive me if I'm stupid, but I've got it on rental and don't have the instructions. How do I know if I've completed a race/challenge already? I've run a couple races over again it seems, only to be told so at the very end. I can't figure out the color coding either.

Theres a little check mark next to the event icon that appears when you pull up to the traffic light if you have completed that event before.Slumberland wrote:I like the game a lot. Has a bit of a Crazy Taxi vibe.

There's a check mark on the dot on the mini-map too, IIRC.Spooky wrote:Theres a little check mark next to the event icon that appears when you pull up to the traffic light if you have completed that event before.Slumberland wrote:I like the game a lot. Has a bit of a Crazy Taxi vibe.

Anyone going to be online with this tonight? I'd really like to try this mode out before bringing the game back. I'm actually enjoying single player a lot more now that I've got my A license and have opened up faster cars and faster competition. My 'samey' obervations still remain, but theres an added level of adrenaline now that makes it quite addictive.
