Huh? What relevance does the victory margin in the Super Bowl have in validating the Pats' greatness?wco81 wrote:At this point, the question left for the Patriots is whether they can blow out their opponent in the SB. If they go 19-0 some will call them the greatest but they have three 3-point SB victories while there have been a lot of blowouts in the SB by teams which nobody was calling the greatest of all time.
If they win the Super Bowl by one or 101, they will be only the second team in NFL history to finish a season unbeaten. They will be the first 19-0 team in NFL history in one season.
The rest is irrelevant.
Remember, the current "greatest team of all time," the 1972 Dolphins, only beat the Redskins 14-7 that year in the Super Bowl to finish 17-0. Does that diminish their greatness compared to a decent team in the regular season that blew out its opponent in the Super Bowl, say the 2002 Buccaneers, which went 12-4 during the regular season and blew out the Raiders by 27 in the Super Bowl?
We're talking about an entire body of work for one season capped by a Super Bowl victory, not the margin of victory in that game. That's the true measure of greatness.
Take care,
PK

Absolutely! Greatest scene of the sports weekend. So gratifying to see that tool and his team go down in flames.wco81 wrote:That expression on Jerry Jones face is priceless.

Well, at least Romo has plenty of time to bang Shovelface during the offseason ... She is outrageous from the neck down, though.

Give Eli some credit: The cat looked solid for the second consecutive playoff week. I thought he channeled his older brother on that final Giants' drive of the first half, which resulted in a TD. Very impressive.
Romo wasn't great today even when he wasn't under pressure, but how many catchable balls did the Cowboys' WR's drop today? At least two for TO, and Crayton had two blatant drops.
Take care,
PK

Dolphins may hold that record but nobody thinks of them among the greatest team of all time.
Patriots have been dominating this salary-capped league like a pre-cap domino. They were rolling teams by 30-40 points and some were saying it wasn't fair, sportsman-like, etc.
Only challenge left for them is to stamp their greatness and win handily.
For some fans, that will be enough.
It's all opinion, whether they would be the greatest team.

You do realize they put a stamp on their 17-0 season by winning the SB the next season too....I hate to say this but at 17-0 those narcissistic ass wipes are under rated...
They should be considered.

Say what? The 1972 Dolphins -- and trust me, I HATE THAT FRANCHISE WITH BLOOD-SCALDING PASSION -- are the only unbeaten team in the history of the NFL. How can they not be considered the greatest of all time?wco81 wrote:Dolphins may hold that record but nobody thinks of them among the greatest team of all time.
I don't care about the '85 Bears. I don't care about any of the Steelers or Niners' dynasty teams. None of them did what Miami did in 1972.
The '72 Dolphins' team was filled with great players. Griese, Csonka, Kiick, Morris, Warfield, Kuechenberg, Buoniconti, Little, Fernandez, Briscoe, Scott, etc., etc., etc. Just as many superstars on both sides of the ball as the '85 Bears or any of the Steelers or Niners' dynasty teams.
And as 34 aptly pointed out, the Dolphins followed their perfect season with a second Super Bowl victory -- by 17 points, if that offers any validation for you.
Take care,
PK

They actually played one of the worst schedules in the history of super bowl champions. They played TWO, count them, TWO teams that were over .500 in the regular season and they trailed in all of the playoff games against like 8-4 teams (or whatever the stat was exactly). They were not NEARLY as dominant as the Patriots. And I LOVE THAT FRANCHISE. I'll take almost any 49ers team from the late 80's/early 90's and the 85 bears, as well as the Pats this year assuming they win it. The Dolphins just weren't that ridiculously great. Just caught teams on a down swing in the early 70's.pk500 wrote:Say what? Early lines:
New England -15
Green Bay -6.5
The NE line seems a touch fat. How Jacksonville got fewer points (+12) at New England than San Diego will is puzzling. Maybe the oddsmakers think SD will be without Rivers and LT?
The GB line is a toughie. The Giants are playing really well, but I still think they're one Eli meltdown away from a blowout loss. GB looked really good, but the Seahawks were overrated competition. As I said before last weekend, beating Washington didn't prove the Seahawks were some sort of powerhouse.
It's early, but right now I'm thinking of taking both 'dogs, with reservations about the Giants. I went 4-1 last weekend, including an over-under pick. I'm probably due for an Eli meltdown, too.

I thought the Colts were a better team, too, but losing twice in one year changes that. SD is better and the second hottest team after the Patriots.
However, I don't think it really mattered if Indy or SD made it to New England. The Patriots would beat either of them. Jacksonville played a fantastic game against New England, and despite moving the ball well only scored 20 and lost by two scores. The Pats defense doesn't have to do too much because so far this year, no defense has been able to slow the Patriots offense down. The Chargers deserved their win, but they also gave up an assload of yards to Manning and got some lucky breaks with two unlikely interceptions. Brady and company don't make mistakes like that.
With all that being said, I think it will be closer than 15 points, so I go with San Diego +15.
It's hard not to think the Packers won't win this weekend. It's going to be cold as s*** up here, which tends to energize the walrus blood of Packer fans attending the games
Seriously, a rejuvinated Favre guiding a Packer team that can run, at home with a chance to go to the Super Bowl? Hard to pick the Giants even with Eli's good performances the past few games. Pack -6.5 over NYG.
And it was super, super great to see America's most onboxious sports franchise suck it at the hands of Eli Manning.

This weekend worked out about as best it could have for me. I was torn between rooting for Green Bay or Seattle. I setteled on Green Bay since this could be Favre's last run. What better way to go out than in the Super Bowl? Then again, I think he'll come back next year after seeing what this team did this year.Inuyasha wrote:I don't know. I don't think anyone in GB cares what the Giants road record is this year. Playing at Lambeau is a HUGE advantage for the Packers, no matter what the weather is.
And now Jerry Jones can concentrate his efforts on pimping the NFL Network.

I don't see anyone beating New England. All the Chargers beating Indianapolis does is to delay the ending of their season by a week.

Yeah, I was stunned by that too. I didn't know what to make of it frankly as the guy has been a long-time lightning rod for attention and an asshat that has called out other players and often eleveated himself above the rest of the team. It had all the appearances of being genuine but so out of character I didn't know what to make of it.fletcher21 wrote:Owens post game press conference in sunglasses when he was choking up and fighting back the tears when talking about Romo getting blamed was crazy to me.
On a related note, go Giants! They will be a decided underdog in the likely harsh environment at Lambeau and I agree that a Madden 08 game from Eli is always a possibility, but they've risen to the occassion recently. It's also a big question mark how healthy their secondary will be. Also, it took them nearly three periods for their pass rush to step up against Dallas. They likely won't be as fortunate the rest of the way.
