HOCKEY NIGHT in DSP 07-08

Pretty surprising given how downright awful the Flyers looked in the first 10 mins. PP looked great though and got them back in game.Diablo25 wrote:WooHoo, Flyer now leading Rangers 3-2 after being down 2-0 early
Real big news of the night though is Ovechkin. 13 years $124 million!

Yeah, they certainly did look ugly. At 2-0 I thought it was going to be an ugly night. 6-2 now! Simon Gagne returns with a goal!Naples39 wrote:Pretty surprising given how downright awful the Flyers looked in the first 10 mins. Great move for Ovechkin's wallet, not a great move for his future if he wants his name engraved on Lord Stanley's mug.Naples39 wrote:Pretty surprising given how downright awful the Flyers looked in the first 10 mins. PP looked great though and got them back in game.

Ovechkin has a crummy supporting cast now in Washington, and with signing Mike Green and a goalie a priority this summer, there won't be squat left with which to sign talented players.
Alexander the Great is stuck in Washington for nearly all of the rest of his career. He hasn't revived the sport in the town so far, and he won't in the future. Plus the Caps aren't going to have the dosh and don't have the front office savvy to build a winning team around him.
Hell, how much will the next deals of Crosby, Iginla and Lecavalier be worth per year? All three are better than Ovechkin.
Take care,
PK

Crosby will be making 9 million next season and I think Iginla is inked already for three years at an average of 7.5 million. When you think that a guy like D. Heatley will be making 10 big ones next year, Ovechkin and WAS are doing just fine. I don't agree with the length of the contract but they way it'll work for T. Leonsis is 9 million for the first six years and 10 big ones for the following seven seasons. The Russian is still young, by the time 2021 comes in, he'll only be 35 years old.
Other big contracts to come in the future are Zetterberg, Kovalchuk and Gaborik.

Most of the games are, but it depends on what teams you want to watch. I pretty much only watch the Penguins games, and I'd guess 75% of them are in HD, since FSN-Pit broadcasts most of the games. Directv is finally allowing you to watch either team's broadcast this year, so for any game you could potentially have 4 channels showing it, with SD and HD broadcasts for each team. The best thing about it is you don't have to pay extra for the HD broadcasts like you do with the NFL package.XXXIV wrote:Well?...anyone?XXXIV wrote:Are the NHL Center Ice games in HD?
With all the money they invested this season, he should be on the slippery rope, Drury and Gomez never seemed to click in the blue uniform. But before him, probably a GM is more at risk. No surprises here, but J. Ferguson Jr's days are numbered.Feanor wrote:The Rangers coach must be getting nervous. For disclosure, I am a Caps season-ticket holder and was there when they announced it.
The Caps needed to do this for survival for one.
The residual income from all things Ovechkin will reduce the contract.
His staying here could actually increase free-agents wanting to come play here. No pressure, relatively anonymous, great cosmopolitan city...what's not to like about that?
They are currently 14 mil under the cap. They have room.
They also have some talent in the minors and junior level not to mention Mike Green and Nick Backstrom.
Ted Leonsis got burned with Jagr and blew this team up as a result. I think he realizes that he needed a star to build around.
Risky? Yes. Smart? Yes. I'm also guessing my season ticket prices just went up, too. Whoops.
I think the Ovechkin contract is good value for the Caps in dollars per year with the Salary Cap contiuing to rise, but I think any NHL contract more than 6 or 7 years is a massive gamble. I wish the CBA had a 10 year maximum for contracts.
As this SI article says, Ovechkin (and Mike Richards) are one elbow to head or bad fall into the boards away from being the next Eric Lindros.

The Oil is gushing right now (pun intended) with its fourth straight victory, a 2-1 win over the hated Flames last night.
Garon continued his great play in goal. The only goalie playing better over the last two weeks in the NHL is Ty Conklin in Pittsburgh. No wonder MacT publicly ordained Garon as the Oilers' No. 1 last week.
It was the best 60 minutes of end-to-end action and intensity I've seen all season in any game. The Battle of Alberta almost always delivers!
I'm not positive that the Oil can make the playoffs this year, but now I'm confident that they will be in the race until the end, unlike last year. This team is really playing well now that it's getting healthy. The power play no longer is the worst in the NHL -- miraculous!
My boy Stollie also is looking like he finally has recovered from the remnants of his two concussions last season. A big plus for the Oil, as is the return of Moreau and his solid two-way play and hustle.
The biggest improvement in the team this year is that it has defensemen who can move the puck from their end quickly and accurately. Gilbert and Pitkanen are especially adept at this, and Souray and Grebeshkov have their moments, too.
Take care,
PK

One goalie I have been quiet impressed this season is the play of E. Nabokov. He leads the league in wins and that's because he's played on all the Sharks' games. Wow. I wonder if he'll have anything left in the tank when the important part of the season starts. But he's been rock solid all season long.
Cujo seems to be back in the NHL now and will dress up for the Flames.

Big question: Will Cujo "pull a Garon" and supersede Kiprusoff as the starter after a while? Kipper has sucked this season, at least by his standards and close to anyone else's.tjung0831 wrote:Cujo signs with Flames..

It'll just allow iron Mike to be the 'Keenan' that we all know about. As soon as the Kipper struggles he won't hesitate to pull him out with more frequency than what's he's done today.pk500 wrote:Big question: Will Cujo "pull a Garon" and supersede Kiprusoff as the starter after a while? If Cujo plays in three games, he'll have more time than Curtis McIlhenny. I think McIlhenny has played 130 minutes over four games this season, or some ridiculous number like that.10spro wrote:It'll just allow iron Mike to be the 'Keenan' that we all know about. It's hard to blame the workload for Kipper's struggles, though. He has sucked all season.
Kipper is renowned for slow starts in October and early November and then a revival of form. That revival never has occurred this season.
As an Oilers' fan, I shed no tears.

Take care,

Well, with Cujo as backup it didn't take long for iron Mike to yank the Kipper out. He like Nabokov, started in all but one game, and some cracks are starting to show. It's good they lost though, as 'Nucks didn't fair any better.
Gotta give credit to the Avs, with Sakic & Smyth out, they keep plucking away.
As good as the Sens are, they just can't beat WAS. A. Semin had a beauty.

Nash's goal was the most ridiculous display of skill I've seen this season. Here it is -- make sure you watch the entire video so you can see the replay:

I subscribe to Staples' blog, which is excellent if you're an Oil fan, and I have this conclusion: Pronger is a DICK who needs some serious PR advice.rubba19 wrote:Interesting info...nice rebuttal by the Edmonton journalist.

All of this could have been avoided if Pronger was just a touch more forthcoming to the fans in his reasons for leaving Edmonton. Sure, some will say it was his right to divulge nothing, but that's naive and ill-advised.
First, the fans pay Pronger's salary. And those fans expect more transparency in a hockey-obsessed city like Edmonton than in St. Louis, where hockey is just a small blip on the city's sports radar.
Prongs simply could have said this was a family decision, something he had to do for his wife and children's happiness, and leave it at that. That would have neutered the rumors that he impregnated a local TV newscaster and also would have reduced the hatred Oilers' fans feel for him now. He wouldn't have been the first guy to flee Edmonton because his family didn't like the cold winters and lack of cosmopolitan appeal, and he won't be the last.
People still boo Mike Comrie because he's a spoiled dick, son of the owner of The Brick chain of appliances, who held out seeking a big contract from the Oilers when he didn't deserve one. But I don't sense hatred toward Comrie. Booing him when he returns to Rexall almost has become a cliche.
That's not the case with Pronger. There's true hatred for that guy, and I'm right there with the Rexall denizens. The guy isn't nearly as stand-up as he's depicted. He handled the entire situation of leaving Edmonton like a weasel.
Take care,
PK
