It will only be remotely usable when they go 3G with the 2nd generation IPhone. It's gonna be a pain in the ass with the crappy EDGE network. It'll be sweet over the 802.11 networks though. I'll install it on my Touch for sure.
Agreed, I wouldn't even try it without being on WiFi, but it's better than nothing!

I wanted Sling too but most hotels, you're lucky to get 512kb download.

In Europe, even though they have more 3G networks, a lot of iPhone plans still have quotas for EDGE.

So the wireless carriers really don't have a pricing model for data designed to attract the mass market.

One reason may be that their infrastructure doesn't really support greater use of data.

You have little gimmicks like Vcast and in Europe, they have video phone calls but those aren't cheap.

LTE is reporting some promising trial results, like 155 Mbps and low pings. But that won't be deployed until 2010 at least and only Sprint and Clearwire are doing WiMax.

End of this month, Google is participating in the 700 Mhz spectrum auctions. Maybe something will come out of that.

Doesn't the MacWorld Expo start today? I'm sure there will be some news about the iPhone's next update.

It should be more exciting than the recent CES.

New iPhone update (1.1.3) is out. I'm downloading now. Supposedly most of the rumored stuff is in the update. I read on one forum that Flash now works in the browser. Copy/paste also. The option to rearrange your home screen too. More impressions later.

already installed (typing this from my iPhone). No copy/paste that I have noticed yet, but the Maps location feature is great as is the customization of the homepage. I already added a 'desktop' link to DSP and made SMS a docked item.

Really looking forward to the Apple TV update.

All that hype about copy and paste and flash most be hidden because I didn't see it. Apple wouldn't secretly put that on the iPhone.

Anyway the editable home screen is a nice feature. The web clips is a great feature. I put all my soccer sites on a second home page.

Sport, I did the same I switched the SMS icon to the main bar. :D

Best phone just gets better.

Today I strolled into CC and I just played around with some phones at the verizon kiosk. I was playing around with a GPS phone and just found it so hard to use. iPhone has really spoiled me. :D

After further research...no copy/paste or flash. Sorry for the bad info. I was just going on what the one forum I frequent was stating. To be clear - NO COPY/PASTE OR FLASH.

If anyone figures out how to rent movies from iTunes let me know. I have no clue how to do it. I don't see any options for it in iTunes.

I think you have to download iTunes 7.6?

iTunes should give you the option to update the software?

You do need itunes 7.6, from there you see the option to upgrade.

Over four million iphones sold since day one. Impressive. I am still waiting for news of the iphone 2 even though this latest upgrade will make a lot of customers happy.

That new thin laptop is nice but I don't know about the price and a HD that will underperform. No firewire either, my Macbook Pro is just fine.

I do have iTunes 7.6 but don't see how to rent the movies. I clicked on "Buy Movie" thinking maybe I would get the option to rent or buy but the password box just pops up. I probably won't rent too many but I still would like to know how. Maybe I'm just dense :)

BTW...F*CK Apple and their bullsh*t $20 charge to update the Ipod Touch to 1.1.3 to get the email/maps/stocks/notes/weather features that the IPhone already has. Oh yeah...and it'll be included in all of the new Ipod Touches as well free of charge. Nice customer service.

There is limited rental content available at this time and it appears they haven't yet created a rental-specific movie category. You can click through the Top rentals and you'll see that many then provde the option to either rent or purchase.

The $20 to upgrade the iPod Touch is an unfortunate "requirement" of current accounting rules. The iPhone and Apple TV are the only products Apple shows a deferred revenue (service) component on; you have to charge something for other products to get upgrades otherwise you can't recognize revenue on the original sale of the product.

That isn't really true. The fact that the Ipod Touch needs to be upgraded to use the "rental" service, is recognizable enough. Why on earth would they charge you for something that will allow them to make more money (rentals)? They already get a revenue stream off of the Touch because you can purchase songs/albums/movies/games etc. right off the wireless internet connection as it is...so there will still be a revenue stream that is recognized. It's just a b*tch slap to the early adopters. Why not just make it a dollar if it really is an accounting issue?

Actually, they charged $5 when they enabled draft 802.11n via a firmware upgrade on some of their computers.

People who bought a new computer had it enabled or people who bought the Airport Extreme base station got the CD with the firmware.

Apple claimed it was due to Sarbanes-Oxley, that you can't charge ahead of time for features you add later and you have to recognize revenue when the features are actually available.

There was an uproar but apparently, Apple is doing the same thing again.

I think the Touch charge is also to keep early iPhone adpoters from feeling like they are getting the shaft with the iPod now being abel to do basically the same stuff (minus the phone and Edge Network).

Reason why they don't charge iPhone is that they are recognizing iPhone revenues over a 24-month period. They are getting a cut of the AT&T subscriber revenues.

Again, Sarbanes-Oxley.

But if people bought the iphone for a just a the ipod features then they are stupid. We all knew that after the iphone there would be a similar ipod made, now the touch.

I'm still very happy with the iPhone. I don't really care what the touch gets. I will get a little upset if you see a 80g touch and only a 8 or 16 g iPhone.

That doesn't make any sense at all because if you go and buy an Ipod Touch from this point forward, you get all of those features for FREE!

True dat!

I guess I'll agree with WCO then and chalk this up to Sarbanes-Oxley.
