This is amazingly impressive. I think it could really open up some eyes for potential for other sports games on Wii. Not to mention that this looks like a soccer game that I could seriously get into. It's almost like taking soccer and combining it with an RTS game.

I definitely see what you mean with the RTS angle, but I'm not so sure about this one.
One the one hand, you have a whole new level of depth in managing space on the field and creating attacks.
On the other hand, the game seems significantly dumbed down in other respects ('waggle' to shoot, game automatically chooses if pass is on ground or in the air, and how are you supposed to dribble at a defender by pointing the in the direction you want to go?)
Now coordinating attacks and creating space is my favorite part of the sport, so I'll see how it turns out, but I am very skeptical at this point.
I do have to Konami a lot of credit though for trying something truly unique and original here on Wii, as opposed to EA who just threw a PS2 port onto Wii for FIFA 08.

If this control scheme actually works as advertised it would be great.
I'm not sure about the "waggle" shooting myself, but since the nunchuk has both tilt and accelerometer functions there is no reason you couldn't snap your wrist up and to the left for a shot in the upper corner. It just depends how they are able to implement it and if they can get the consistency right. As to dribbling, it appeared (to me, anyway) in the video that you can either point in a direction or control the ball handler with the nunchuk joystick. There must be some modifiers for dribble moves as well, because the video showed a spin and step-over.Naples39 wrote:On the other hand, the game seems significantly dumbed down in other respects ('waggle' to shoot, game automatically chooses if pass is on ground or in the air, and how are you supposed to dribble at a defender by pointing the in the direction you want to go?)
Kudos to Konami for sure. Have you tried FIFA 08 yet? I haven't, but I don't think the videos I saw some time ago made it look like a straight port. I just hope it doesn't suck the way NBA Live seems to; based on the reviews of that I won't even rent it.Naples39 wrote:I do have to Konami a lot of credit though for trying something truly unique and original here on Wii, as opposed to EA who just threw a PS2 port onto Wii for FIFA 08.
Knowing Konami, I'm sure there's an option to map the passing/shooting to buttons rather than with the waggle. In general the waggle feature has run it's course.
The IR cursor is really where I see true potential, and that trailer seems to show an excellent implementation of the feature. The IR seems much more tangible and accurate so that it could be used for putting in a golf game, aiming for pitching in a baseball game, or picking a receiver in football. I really hope devs explore the IR for more than just menus.

Okay, I was little off on FIFA. I just took a look at the Gamespot, and although they give it a mediocre score (6.5), the game got the Madden Wii treatment by adding mini-games and simplified motion controls.EZSnappin wrote:Kudos to Konami for sure. So basically... gimmicks. Which I think is disappointing.Naples39 wrote:

I am actually excited to try out the foosball mini game. That has some potential. The Wii controller seems to pick up twisting motion pretty well...

I agree. I am very impressed! It looks like it could open up a whole new range of tactics.jacobe wrote:http://media.wii.ign.com/media/827/827202/vids_1.html

FWIW, the producer of PES Wii doesn't feel they have dumbed down the game:
Full interview hereWould you say the Wii version is one for hardcore players? Wii is geared more towards casual players in Europe, is this the same in Japan?
Greyhound: In the beginning I wondered if we would have to create a casual game, because the Wii is a more of a casual player's machine. But I thought it would be boring if we create it as a more casual game. Therefore in the beginning I abandoned any plans to make this a more casual version and started to look for a brand new direction.

Also curious to see how the controls pan out for this one. It seems like it will be really really good or just the opposite. I'll grab the 360 version if it's the latter.Gamecocks625 wrote:Anyone else looking forward to this? It should be an interesting way to play PES. I'll either get this version or the PS2 version.

Here is another video which shows gameplay footage not yet seen. It seems like someone is playing training mode. What's interesting is that the bottom lefthand side of the screen indicates which action you are performing. Once the controls are learned, I have a feeling this will be a really fun way to play the game.

I'm a skeptic only because I know my coordination isn't very good. I had problems with Super Mario Galaxy pointing on the screen when I played it over a friends house. I don't know how I would ever pull this off.

Here's another video. It's a developer walk-through, although not as cool as the one posted above.

I tell you what, I am really pumped about the possibilities with this take on PES. The amount of strategy available through with Wii Remote will be really neat to toy around with.
Plus, it's finally good seeing a developer taking a sports game seriously on the Wii. Hopefully an NCAA football game using the remote to pitch, etc. is in the works at EA as well.

I just have a feeling this game will be insanely addictive. The preview mentions that you can't just go on long runs without thinking about the pass. That there, is already a huge improvement from the other/past versions of the game. Let's see how the whole "waggle the nunchuck" for shooting goes, but otherwise, the playmaking potential is massive.Jimmydeicide wrote:Hopefully the input is responsive like wii sports otherwise it will be a completely frustrating experience and i will have to strap the wrist band on for sure so i dont throw it thru my tv in anger

This thing looks like an absolute disaster to me. Even accounting for a learning curve, the control system looks clunky and likely to highlight the probelms that exist with the Wii scheme.

Yeh , hope your wrong tho Rob but shaking the nunchuck to shoot just sounds lame, not even feeling like you would be shooting, i dunno i think they could have done something better for shooting, if its move the analog and kinda push forward so you are actually aiming it sounds ok but a random shake sounds bad to me.
