I think it's pretty poor of Sony to not put a combination composite/component cable in with the PS3, let alone an HDMI cable.

I shudder to think at how many tech unsavvy people have bought a 40 GB PS3 to plug into their HDTV with the included composite cable.

New firmware update v2.10. This new system update enhances media playback on the PS3 such as DivX and VC-1 (WMV) videos now become playable in the Video section of the XMB. This update also brings the PS3’s Blu-ray drive up to Profile 1.1. “Picture in Picture” and other enhancements, such as voice changer, etc.

Supposedly, you can also play PS1 games over remote play on your PSP (whether purchased from the online store or straight off a disc in the drive).

Maybe this is old news to some of you, but were you PS3 owners aware of this?

EDIT: From what I understand, this is only for people using HDMI cables.

Now if only I had an HDMI input on my archaic HDTV. Oh well.

With the new firmware update my PS3 has replaced my old modded Xbox running XBMC as my new media centre - so nice to be able to play avi/divX without transcoding.

Did you get a PS3 db? Shoot me a friend invite. My PSN is ScoopBrady. How you liking it?

I've had those settings changed since it became available in a firmware update. I've never had a complaint with the PS3's graphics. Uncharted looks amazing.

Yeah...I haven't even played it yet. Just watched a few blue rays over the holiday break this weekend, but that's it. No games I really want to play now. I did rent a few from gamefly that arrived a couple days ago (MLB & ATV/MX)...but I haven't fired em up yet. I will probably get around to it tonight so I'll send ya the invite.

That's a great tip, but wtf did I have to watch a video to get the simple instructions? LOL

Well, I suppose I could have just printed out the instructions, but it was easier to copy and paste at the time. In any case, the video doesn't really give a good indication as to whether or not changing the settings make that big of a difference. The video is pretty poor quality.

I finally got an HDTV so the PS3 is next up on my shopping list. Probably this week if not in the next month. Blu ray is my justification as there are only two games Im interested in at the moment.

I saw the 5 free blu ray disc offer...Is that any movie? or from a set of movies?

Do I want the 80gb over the 40gb?...and why?

It is from a set of crappy movies. I got the same offer (I think) when I just got a stand alone Blu Ray let me find that list for you.

I thought only the 40 GB packed in Spiderman3 on Blu-Ray.

The 80 GB offers software backwards compatibility while the 40 GB offers no BC at all.

hidefdigest.com has reviews of all Blu-Ray and HD-DVD movies.

The free movies deal has been going on for months now so it may expire or they may run out of certain movies.

They'd be smart to have new bundles with some old games at least, now that Christmas season is over.

The 40gb does include the Spiderman 3 movie. Too bad I watched it on DVD a few weeks earlier prior to purchase. IMO, it was the worst of the three movies. But, it looks fantastic on blu-ray at 1080P.

On a side note, I had not changed my display settings per the instructions. I did it this evening prior to playing NBA 2K8 and it definitely seems brighter and more vibrant. A game such as as Unchartered would be a better test.

If you won't be playing any PS2 games on it, there's really no reason to get the 80gb version.

The 80gb comes with Motostorm and PS2 compatibility through software.

Careful with these settings as they are completely dependent on what your TV's HDMI input is set to. Most newer HDTV's have a setting for HDMI Input and can be set to either "Low" or "Normal". I think if you enable these PS3 settings you need to make sure your TV is set to HDMI Input "Normal", if not, it will be too dark as opposed to washed out (or too bright).

I bought the Nyko Bluwave IR remote control today and it was a breeze to setup on the Harmony remote. I've been using the controller for the past 7 months to control movies so it's great to finally have a remote control for movies.

I didn't think the PS3 could be controlled by IR? I thought they only used the bluetooth controllers??? So that USB dongle really does add that to the system? That's badass...i'm gonna return my Bluetooth Sony Remote then if that's the case. Nice. Where did you buy it?

Yes, the USB dongle allows IR control. I bought it at Gamestop. During setup on the Logitech remote I added the device Gamesystem with DVD, selected Nyko, and Bluwave was even given as the example. I then added the device to my PS3 activity and mapped all the applicable buttons.

Nice. I'll have to swing by my local store this afternoon and grab one. I was pissed I couldn't control the PS3 with my URC. Thanks.
