Any DS Lite retail deals out there?

We just bought one for our 6 year old (and me as well, of course). Right now he plays Star Wars Legos and Hamsterz Life. One thing I've noticed when looking for gams is that there are a lot of good ones for both kids and adults. Our cousins have a couple DS's, and they brought over a bunch of games last week. Definitely plenty of types of games to please everyone.

I wouldn't worry too much about a 5 year old ruining one unless he's one of those destructo types that has a history of breaking things. Another cool thing about the DS is it plays GBA games as well. You should be able to find some educational titles that he'd enjoy. The Brain Age game smay be a little advanced for him, but a game like Hamsterz Life teaches them things, even if it's not directly aimed at math or history.

I was going to recommend picking up a used original DS since they seem to be much sturdier, but they don't look significantly discounted on ebay. We bought one for our boys (4 and 2) but they don't use it much. They much prefer the Leapsters. The games can be pricey, but if you hunt around you can find deals. I found a sale at Target and bought Kindergarden and Cars) for $14.99. We also bought the recharging system.

I wouldn't worry too much about the game complexity as long as they are kid-friendly you should be fine. My 4 year old plays Lego Star wars by himself and is working his way through the first game on his own without our help.

So far this year I've picked up:

The New York Times Crosswords
SimCity DS
Picross DS
Brain Age 2

I already have the older classics like New Super Mario Bros., Clubhouse Games, Elite Beat Agents, Mario Kart, and Brain Age.

I'm still having a blast with the DS Lite. It's my most played system at the moment. I have cut back on the amount of sports games that I play due to them just not living up to expectations (other than having fun with Wii Sports and Madden 08 Wii minicamps). Plus, I don't get that much time to game other than a quick session in bed when the wife falls asleep next to me.

Do you guys still play it much?

I'm almost finished with Phoenix Wright, great game btw. How is Simcity on the DS? I didn't even realize it was released already.

As much as I've enjoyed my DS in the past with Brain Age, Mario Brothers, Zoo Keeper, and Elite Beat Agents, my DS has been collecting dust recently. I'm sure I'll pick it back up at some point, but not sure when.

Also, SimCity for DS got pretty poor reviews. Don't recall the exact complaints though.

To tell you the truth, I really enjoy SimCity DS. I had never played a SimCity game before so I don't have any prior experience to go by. At any rate, it's a great game on the DS. GameInformer listed it as the handheld game of the month. The only complaint I have is not being able to save more than one city at a time.

If you want to take the plunge, you can always get it off of ebay. The going rate is close to $12-15.

New York Times Crosswords is great on the DS, but man, some of the puzzles kick my tail. Anyways, is anyone planning on picking up Zelda next week? I preordered it today. The last Zelda game I beat was Zelda II for the NES back in the day.

Contra 4 ships this week. It actually includes the NES versions of Contra and Super C as unlockables.

It really is. I played a demo of it (download station) and it was a blast; very tough, but the spreadshot is still awesome.

I'm a little worried about the difficulty level. One thing I don't miss about the games of yesteryear is how some were so difficulty it would take hours of practice just to build the skills to get out of the first few levels.

There were some impressions on Kotaku a while back where the player said it seemed tough at first, but after adjusting, he could get through the first level nicely. Unfortunately, the second level totally kicked his ass, as he words like seemingly near impossible.

This game better have a damn konami/contra code to give us 30 lives!

I just preorded Advance Wars: Day of Ruin. Supposedly, it's a really good war strategy game. This one is supposed to have a darker theme to it which is fine by me.

Finally got my hands on Contra 4. Tried playing it on medium, and man it is tough. The first level is very beatable, but difficulty ramps up fast. You pretty much have to know exactly what you're doing or you will die over and over.

Also, I stumbled upon the '99 lives glitch' completely by accident. Go to gamefaqs.com if you want to know what it is. Even 99 lives, I still only got to about level 6 (the wrecked city level). I'm gonna have to try some easy because as the difficulty was taking away from the fun, because let's be honest, everyone loved playing the original contra with a friend and 30 lives, not playing through by themselves with just 3 men.

Not sure if anyone cares, but spent some more time with Contra 4, and the game is significantly easier on easy difficulty. Enemy bullets are slower, your powerups are stronger, and enemies are weaker as well. Actually made it through a level or two without dying. Still haven't beat it yet though. This game is a good piece of retro, maintaining the pace and feel of an oldie but a goodie.

My son Noah is really digging Crayola Treasures. He got that last night as a gift. I guess they didn't make too many copies, so they're retailing the game for $30. Kind of annoying.

I'm plannning on picking up Metroid Prime Pinball for $10 used at Game Stop tonight. I've read great reviews on this game from those on here as well as other message boards.

By the way, is anyone familar with R4? Supposebly you can run emulators off the card from what I've read. Has anyone had any experience with these or know of what kind of games you can load on them?

I don't know too much about the R4 in particular, but I believe it's one of many types of flash cards available for DS. It would allow you to run emulators (though the DS isn't the most powerful systems for that) or full-on commercial DS roms.

I hope it makes it over to the states as Elite Beat Agents 2. I really enjoyed EBA. I'm not sure how well EBA did commercially, but with the popularity of music games, it would be a good choice to "Americanize" it and bring it to the DS. I really think it would sell much better than the original with proper marketing.

EBA sold OK according to wiki - 120,000. But that was half of what Nintendo had hoped for.

I traded in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, which by the way is a very good game for Picross. This game is every bit as addictive as claimed. It definitely lives up to the hype! I only messed around with it for a little while last night, but I can already tell this is a game with a lot of replay value. What a great puzzle game!
