OT: Super Mario Galaxy Impressions...

Post by maddoc1979 »

Picked it up this afternoon at Best Buy. I've played for about 2 hours this evening and thought I'd post some impressions for anyone who's interested. I'll also make the font white for those that don't want to read anything about the game before they play it.

In 2 hours, I've managed to collect only 4 stars, the first of which is an introduction level, and 3 of which are in the first galaxy. I can see this game requiring a large time commitment to fully play through, so I wouldn't be worried about the "small planet" issue. I haven't yet gotten to any level that gives me any of the fun suits, so no comments there.

The game looks gorgeous. I'm not going to preface that comment with "for a Wii game" because it really does look amazing. It's Mario through and through, so if you don't like that art style, you won't like it in this game, but for fans, it's amazing. And for fans, there are lots of fan-service moments right off the bat. I had a big grin on my face the entire time I was playing. There's clearly a lot of creativity in this game.

Lastly, the game controls extremely well. Everything is super responsive and I've never felt out of control of Mario. The only complaint I have is that my hands are a little tired because I've played the Wii so little since Zelda that I'm not used to holding the controllers. Extended playtimes will definitely require an adjustment period. The game also just asks that you adjust your thinking about platformers because of the different gravity on each planet. I'm always worried I'm going to fall of the edge as in previous Mario games, but then, I don't. I can even feel myself doing the "head-lean" as Mario runs around upside down and askew.

The game is just plain fun. It's not like playing Halo, which is also fun, but requires a certain amount of intensity. In Mario, I'm just exploring and not thinking about what's right around the corner, even though I'm eagerly anticipating the next scene. I'm not sure that made any sense, but whatever.

I'm happy to answer questions.

Yeah Spooky some retailers jumped the gun and started selling the game early. I'm waiting for next week though to take advantage of Mario Galaxy for $25 at TRU. They have a sale going on where they'll give you a $25 gift card if you buy Mario Galaxy there next week.

Maddoc,

Thanks for the impressions. Do you find the game disorienting at all? I watched a youtube gameplay video yesterday, and I seriously felt dizzy watching it. I can't imagine playing an entire game like that, although I know it's not all upside down.

It's a little disorienting at first, but you quickly become accustomed to it. The trickiest thing, as I mentioned earlier, is that we're not trained to be comfortable platforming upside down or on the side of an object. Our intuition is that jumping when you're upside should make you fall off the object but that doesn't happen here. It just requires some re-learning, but it's totally fun. I haven't felt overtly dizzy at any point.

I pre-ordered there as soon as I heard about that deal. That's a great bargain....as long as they are smart enough to hold my copy.

They'll have enough as that is a triple A title and will be in demand. Also even better news according to cheapassgamer.com, TRU is going to have another buy 2 get 1 free deal for the Wii. So I plan on saving my gift card and using it the following week so i'll end up buying 3 Wii games for $75. :D

Sounds awful. :)

It's on the way from Gamefly, now all I gotta do is find a Gamestop with a Wii on my way home tonight.

Because it's set in a different kind of Mario world, do you find it just as engaging? Also, it would appear that there would be numerous "Oh Cr*p" moments where you miss a jump and fall out into space. Is that true?

I fell into space once last night. Its kind of 2x+1(odd) ish walking around a sphere and not falling off. Thats going to be the hard thing, learning where there IS and is NOT gravity.

Has anyone with Mario Galaxy played a better game this year? Unless you absolutely hate platformers (in which case I doubt you have a Wii or bought this game) this game is FANTASTIC. I actually love the small planets because I game in small time periods and I love how there isn't needless backtracking when you die. I enjoy almost every minute I'm playing and don't feel like I'm wasting time. I've enjoyed the boss battles as well.

Agreed. The pacing is perfect. I love knowing that I can just jump in and play for 20-30 minutes if I'd like.

For the past 6 years or so, I've only been a sports gamer - but this game, and others on the Wii have made me realize how great the platforming/adventure/puzzle genre is. A totally immersive and unique atmosphere, without so much worry about realism, but rather on gameplay and imagination.

All I can tell you about the game is that if you look at the Super Mario Galaxy logo and write down which letters have stars at their corners, you get "U R MR GAY".

You gotta love those graphic artists

Anyone pick up #2? I've got it on the way from Gamefly after reading all of the ridiculous reviews claiming it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. Anyone get into it yet?

I never finished Super Mario Galaxy 1, but it was a very enjoyable game. This one just seems like more of the same.

By the way, Buy.com has this game for $37 with free shipping if anyone is interested.
