Definitely the best 2k sports game to date.
I'm telling you, download Venom's v3 style and play on AS with 8 min periods. I'm loving this game quite a bit.
I tried Venom's style and it felt too slow. Also, the speed burst was almost invisible. Do the "styles" incorporate all the gameplay sliders?
I am finding "sim style" pretty good.
Isn't sim style set to REALLY low speed?
With v3 of Venom's it's at 20 I believe and the speed bursts work like they should. I thought Sim style was set to 10 or something.
Maybe I didnt have V3? I'll check again.
Mizz....how long did it take to get used to the new controls?
I switched to "classic", but I think I am not getting the full experience'that way. I am thinking about biting the bullet and getting used to the default controls.
I finally bit the bullet and played a full game with the new controls last night. I am really enjoying this game, but passing and shooting and changing player with the right and left bumpers really feels uncomfortable.
I was able to get sort of used to it after a full game and even won 2-1 on Allstar, but my hands felt sore after all this bumper pressing. 2K8 is a really, really polished and great hockey game, but this control scheme is almost ruining the game for me. I love how much control and options you have, but I HATE the configuration. Yeah, I know you can switch to the old controls, but the game was designed and meant to be played with the new controls. You also lose some funtionality with the old controls.
It's a shame that I might have to ditch this great game because of the controls. I don't think I can recall another sports game where I felt that way. Also, the fact that NHL08 is so damn easy to control makes this decision more difficult.

I was like this at first Jack, but I went into the "free skake" option and just practiced for about an hour.
Keep it simple at first and learn the other buttons later on.

I don't have any problems pressing the right buttons or remembering them. It's just that all that index finger/bumper pressing cramps my hands after a while.
My NHL2K8 experiment is over. I'm just not having fun wrestling with the controller anymore. The game plays like hockey in 1985 in Boston Garden. No open ice aywhere...constant hitting...no flow. Some may like that style, but it's just not representative of today's game. I thought I would get used the controls after a while, but I just got more and more frustrated with the layout. Also, the players move very robotic to me.
The AI still has problems where it doesn't take shots it should. I don't fear
players in alone on the goalie, like I do in 08. Also, it plays very stiff and clunky compared to the silky smooth NHL08.

It's back to NHL08 for me
I really like NHL 08 as well, but c'mon - watch a hockey game, there isn't as much room to move as there is in NHL 08.
Watching the CPU pass like every player is Wayne Gretzky gets old to me. They could have made the game 60 fps and I think I would have stuck with NHL 08 - but for me it's just frustrating watching my D stand around.
Oh well... both games have their +/- and I can understand you liking NHL 08.

NHL 08 doesn't have any board play and you pretty much can walk up the ice untouched until you get in your opponent's end. I don't think that is very representative of today's game either, but it does make for a faster more fluid game that some may like.
Thanks for the heads up, 10spro. I was just thinking that I need to start playing both this and 08 more (NBA2k8 has chewed up most of my free gaming time), and the update clinches it. Just as things are starting to click for the Pens...couldn't have asked for better timing.
That's a great deal for those of you still on the fence. I just don't know how much longer my machine is in for repairs but I've been itching to play it again since there's a new update on the game.
MizzouRah wrote:I "officially" love NHL 2k8. I've seen so many things this game has to offer. Using original 6's game style, this game plays great!
What differences/ advantages do you see to venon's final sliders?
The biggest advantage is the game speed is much faster, which for some reason makes shots much harder by both the CPU and human players.
Shot totals might be a tad high, but we'll see after some more games as fatigue sets in.
I'm telling you, I've seen so many cool things in this game. Broke the glass behind the net last night on a slapper by Kariya. :0
I'm now 1-3 after scoring a goal on a breakaway by Eric Johnson with 1:28 left in the game. That's the thing about 2k games, it takes me awhile getting good settings and such before I really get into their games.
I'm bumping this thread to see if anyone has some 2 player slider settings they can recommend.

Loving this game right now as playoff drive fever is grabbing me.
Playing with Abners sliders at the moment , been trying a few different ones lately but Bills are realy good. Bill or anyone, could you tell me what level your sliders where tweaked for , im playing them on pro as i feel its the most even game at that level.
Ive searched for info on his sliders but cant find anything.
