Best wishes to the Leafs' Jason Blake, who has a rare form of leukemia. Apparently he can continue to play:

It is remarkable how the Avalanche keep finding young gems at forward outside of the first round. Drury, Hejduk, Svatos, now Stastny. Even Vrbata gave them production at first. Unfortunately they don't seem to have the same good fortune with dmen and goalies, as that still looks to be their team weakness.

It used to be a new year's tradition in Vancouver where the Flyers would make their visit at the garage. Because of the lousy schedule it's been awhile that Philly showed up here, but I am looking forward to see them tonight. They're definitely an improved team so far, and 'Nucks will have to contain the Briere-Gagne-Knuble line.

Habs'goalie of the future (C. Price) makes his anticipated debut tonight with Pitts and these two teams have a little rivalry going with each other lately including during the preseason when S. Koivu was boarded by D. Armstrong which many thought was a dirty hit.

Oil-Wild tonight. I don't care what MacT and Hemsky say: Hemmer will be looking over his shoulder all night for the Boogeyman, who laid him out last season.

Sad thing is, the Oil has no counter for Boogaard since Laraque is gone and Stortini is in Springfield.

Could be ugly.

Well, it doesn't take long for Toews to score his 1st goal in the NHL. 13:43 of the 1st period in his first game! God I hope this kid turns out to be a superstar.

Canucks played an absolute stinker. Just to make it short, they played so bad they allowed a SHG when they were on a 5-3 PP. Listless, pathetic, no pride, no emotion throughout three periods. But here's the real stinker: With the game decided already by the 1st period, and the score 8-2 in the third J. Boulerice crosschecks R. Kesler in the head out of nowhere. Absolutely unnecessary.

A cheap shot to say the least, a suspension worth of at least eight games IMO.

The Oil's record against Minnesota for the last two seasons and the first game of this season: 4-13.

Damn, that team has Edmonton's proverbial number, big time. The Wild will be a force in the West this season. A very complete hockey team, with excellent coaching.

Backstrom's GAA through three games is 0.33 with two shutouts. At this rate, he'll rival Luongo as the best goalie in the West, if not the NHL.

Take care,
PK

From a Flyers perspective, that was a stunning performance. The Flyers got everything going they could've wanted; the PP looked great, youngsters Carter, Umberger, Lupul and Richards all scored (Richards with 4 points on the night), and the first line continued to produce. This team should be very exciting to watch.

About Boulerice, what a freaking idiot. Yes, he should be suspended for that. Just totally unnecessary and pointless.

Indeed. Drilled a guy during an OHL playoff game in 1998, I believe, and was suspended for the entire 1998-99 regular season.

A longtime idiot and lug nut, much like Downie. He'll get 20 from Campbell, I bet. How couldn't he? A stupid, stupid hit.

He's got a history. I think he was kicked out of the Ontario league. After the game, he knew what he did was a mistake, apologized in public, but a stiff suspension is due.

An accurate view from Eric Duhatschek from the G&M on Boulerice:

http://www.globesports.com/servlet/stor ... ockey/home

What made me laugh even more about the unnecesary cowardly crosscheck, is that Boulerice is about to drop the gloves once he sees Kesler lying motionless. A real tough guy ....

That was an ugly, ugly incident. The opposing player was on his knees and Boulerice took a baseball swing to his head. Left the guy unconscious and convulsing on the ice. I hate the fact that Boulerice is on the Flyers now.

Good link. I think that clearly shows the players were going at it a bit, and Boulerice cross-checked him with the intent to start a fight. Unfortunately he got a little carried away.

For those Boulerice haters, here's a flashback which should make you smile:

First the good news: Pulford is reassigned. One could only hope that Rocky Wirtz is freeing up Tallon to GM without interference from Pulford.

And now the bad news: Ramage is a dickhead.

I would've given him 10-15, but given that Chris Simon got 25 for a similar offense last year, I can't complain too much.

The only thing that puzzles me though, is Campbell explained that Sutton didn't get suspended because Campbell felt there was a lack of intent to injure and no injury resulted. I think both could be said for the Boulerice hit (no injury resulted, and Boulerice was attempting to instigate a fight, not knock him out). I just can't for the life of me figure out the NHL's criteria for suspension.

Frankly, I don't think they have the vaguest idea what they are doing. They take each incident and just do what feels right to them on that day. Hard to change behavior when suspensions vary so wildly and unpredictably.

I'll be watching closely for a suspension after the Tootoo hit last night. Very similar to Downie hit IMO--blatantly head-hunting on a defenseless player coming out from behind the net. Tootoo wasn't penalized on the play but the hit was clearly a charging penalty based on Tootoo's run-up, similar to the Downie hit being a charge based on leaving his feet. Neither player used his elbow.

Lack of intent to injure? Are you sh*tting me? Boulerice cross-checked Kesler IN THE FACE. It wasn't a love tap to the protected shins or hands.

How does that not qualify as intent to injure?

As I've said, I think he was trying to give him a shot up high to start a fight, as evidenced by his immediate motion to drop the gloves after the shot. You don't do that if you're trying to put him lights out with one blow. When a guy wants to knock someone out cold they deliver the blow then sneak away.

It's very common for a fighter to send a shot across someone's face to initiate a fight. Boulerice is just an idiot and did it too hard with his stick on a player who wasn't prepared for it. Stupidity is not the same as intent.

Dude, we're talking about Jesse Boulerice here, not a Rhodes Scholar. You don't cross-check someone in the face like that without intent to injure.

Yeah, a shot better known as a face wash with the palm of a glove, or a sucker punch. Not a full-force thrust with a stick to the face. I've seen cross-checks to the chest and shoulder or slashes to the wrist or calves to start fights, but not many blatant cross-checks to the jaw.

At least we agree that Boulerice is a moron! :)

Definitely. Aside from criticizing the NHL for their policies and suspension decisions, the other half of me is glad I don't have to watch this clown put on a Flyers' jersey for the next two months.

Boulerice sucks. He got what he deserved. Unfortunately, aside from Downie and Boulerice, not many others are getting the punishments they deserve.

Blues rookie David Perron makes his NHL debut tonight. Andy Murray held him out the first few games to let him watch and learn from the pressbox. He'll play on a line with Doug Weight and Martin Rucinsky tonight.
