2k goalies from yesteryear, but not this one! Goalie play is much better in 2k8 this year, and one of the things it does better than 08.

Good post Zep. I agree with pretty much all of it.

Great write-up Zep! I can't really disagree with anything you said.
As far as radar needed for online games....just use a different camera, like classic or overhead and it not really an issue.

Look forward to trying to play as goalie. I haven't tried that yet.

Bit of a controversy on that front, Gang. The dude who does the best NHL PC rosters, Watis, was offended that a bunch of morons gave his beta roster a low grade. So he scrapped the whole project.

The guy either must have a huge or fragile ego -- or both. Many people are trying to persuade him to resume the project.

PK[/quote]

Ya, I have all those other mods too, they are pretty spiffy. I know about Watis too.... I've never used his rosters before, but he does seem a tad sensitive to the grading thing, which I never look at anyway, lol.

I hope someone else does something. I dled one of the rosters, and the Oil looked ok but they had Penner at RW, and no created Gagner or Nillson.

When player locked, it is an issue even in the classic camera. I didn't know there was an overhead camera, but I probably wouldn't play very well from it.

But Jimmy is right, there is the back button thing, which I completely forgot about. That may well be the more elegant solution, but nonetheless I'd love to have the option to turn on a radar, and to set it to semi-transparent, and so on. Don't have to use it, but they could still give us the option.

Just picked this one up and do really like this game after 3 exhibition games. I agree with what some say that it feels rewarding to score goals. The only thing is defense seems non-existant but I am still new to the game and maybe I just don't know how to play it. I do like how they have AHL teams in the game and their arenas.

I'll be renting 2k8 Monday and I liked playing the demo for that game as well. So far, I like what both games have to offer, but went with NHL08 since I like the AHL teams I can play here.

I am so f'n close to this game being perfect. On Pro the CPU defense was just too passive so i moved to All Star with sliders pretty close to QBerts from over at OS and the entire game plays fantastic........except i can't flippin score. I'm averaging a goal a game since moving to these and it's driving me nuts. I fear moving the shot accuracy slider (currently at 2) because i'm afraid it will boost CPU scoring as well which i can't afford (they are anywhere from 2-6 goals currently). Any thoughts?

In my limited tweaking, I've found increasing shot power makes the most difference in increasing scoring. Also, turning up shooting abilities seems to help human players more than the CPU, though I can't be as sure.

Rally , i think the cpu is gonna score its goals no matter what, i am still experimenting with Shot accuracy but even at 2 the cpu still had from 20 to 50 shots on me so i moved it back to 3 as i do think that is key to you scoring, that and probly shot power and pass speed. i can still score enough i feel with shot speed at 2 but i think im gonna have to bump up pass speed again from 0 to 3 or 4 , im in a big slump right now and its realy annoying me , getting walloped 5/6-2 every game.

accuracy and shot accuracy should be 3 and 3 thats the only slider points im sure of its even, yeh the cpu are gonna score on them but probly no more than at 2.

This game is driving me crazy right now , i cant stop the cpu in my zone if its cos my players stats have gone down as im in a slump or what i dont know but i didnt realy want to tinker with coach or gm duties but it seems the game is forcing me too.

If this continues and sliders dont get me out of this slump im probly shelving it and getting 2k.

Well after shaking up my lines bringing up a goaltender and a forward from minors i won the next 2 games 2-1 and 4-2 all of a sudden my team responded in my own end and was able to make some key defensive plays to keep the other team guessing.

Sucks that i have to manage the team like this but i guess im going to have to keep a closer eye on my players as the margin between winning and getting a gubbing is very minute.

Realy enjoyed the last 2 games lol this game has me shouting out loud when i score or do something good in the defensive zone. Its so hard on allstar. So for now the 2k8 money stays in the bank.

it's worth it to play on Allstar. You have to work on every shift and play good D or you will get lit up. I love the challenge of that. Pro, you can relax and still win.

I played about 7 games of 2K and all my games were 1-0 or 2-1, so I don't know what you are talking about. In fact, I had a shootout that lasted for about 13 shooters, so the goalies in 2K are still pretty tough.
I actually score more goals playing NHL08, but that might be because I am more familiar with that game. Either way, I don't see much difference between the two games....goalie wise.

I had a 7-4 game last night on the Difficult skill level with NHL 08 on the PC right after a 2-1 game. The variety of outcomes and goals scored in this game still continues to amaze me.

I have the game tricked out with updated NHL and AHL rosters, accurate arena structures and scoreboards, updated board ads, updated Reebok EDGE jerseys, realistic arena music and a CBC overlay on the scoreboard and into replays. Just need to get the updated ice surfaces for each team when they're done.

Really immersive, really fun. The game plays really well on the PC.

Take care,
PK

Put it this way.. the goalies in NHL 08 never flop around and they do in 2k8. I've had 6-4 games and 2-1 games so I don't know what you are talking about.

Do you find the PC gets an unfair advantage on Difficult PK? I'm playing on the middle difficulty with some slider tweaks, and I'm not doing the Oilers any favours, lol.

I think i'm 2-4-1 or something like that.

Not at all. I'm still outshooting the CPU regularly on Difficult even though I try to cycle and look for good shots, not the only shot available.

The CPU makes you pay for mistakes on Difficult. So even though it's often outshot, the CPU is efficient with its chances, resulting in close games.

Try Difficult default. I think you'll like it.

I never saw the AI score more than 3 goals in about 8 games. But that's not my main problem with the game...it's the hand-cramping controls, the lack of spacing on the ice and the robotic way the players move. It's not a bad game... I just found that I prefer NHL08. Most reviewers rate it a little higher than 2K8 also, so I am not the only one.

Maybe once i start winning on Pro again I will.... It's weird, I started a franchise and was winning most of my games. I downloaded a new roster, started over, and now can't buy a win!

Also, TCE08 came out, which looks to edit many hidden game attirbutes, so it's even more tweakable now.

What roster did you get? That could be the problem.

I'm leery of rosters with significant attribute edits, especially since I'm pleased as spiked punch with the default play at Difficult. A bit fast, but very playable.

I grabbed a roster at nhldepot.net that just updated numbers, lines and player transactions. No attribute edits, I think.

Take care,
PK
