HOCKEY NIGHT in DSP 07-08

Post by Sudz »

Thought I'd kick off a thread for this season as the camps open today.

I think the PENS are overrated this year..GREAT young team, but they didn't make any real strides at picking up anyone..sykora was a good pick-up, but they are 1-2 guys away from really being dominant.

I think the Flyers did enough to warrant a trip back to the playoffs. On paper, we look like the 3rd best team in the Atlantic, behind the Rags and Pens. However, if guys like Jeff Carter and Mike Richards can finally come into their own, the potential is there to surprise a lot of people.

Moral victories are what we are shooting for this year! Course the highlight will be when Al Arbour takes the helm for a game against the Pens..

I expect the Blues to make the playoffs under Andy Murray this year...probably a 6th seed or so. Our defense is solid and we have great depth throughout the organization at every position. I also expect some of our young talent to make the team out of training camp...possibly Patrik Berglund as well as David Perron. The Blues had one of the best records in the NHL after Andy Murray took over last year, I exepect more of the same this season.
I look forward to seeing Jonathon Toews and Patrick Kane in Chicago and seeing what they can do for the Hawks.
I like the Kings as a suprise team in the west if their goaltending can hold up.
My pre training camp Stanley Cup prediction....

New York Rangers vs San Jose Sharks.

Nice to see those rookies fighting for a job. It's still an Indian summer here in Vancouver and I must admit, it doesn't feel like Hockey season yet. But hopefully with some new additions and a possible trade for more depth upfront, we'll be in the mix for the Cup comes playoffs time.

Flyers could really finish anywhere this season, but I think at the very least they will contend for a playoff spot. I agree with you about Carter and Richards. This is a make or break season for them this year, and if the Flyers are struggling and these guys aren't producing by January one of them will probably be traded.

I beg and pray for an 8 seed but realize that's a pipe dream. If Savard can get another year of experience behind the bench and Toews and Kane can play all year I'll be happy. It would be great to have a Skille sighting this season as well.

Very steep odds for the Oil to make the playoffs, especially with Pisani's illness. The guy doesn't score a lot of goals, but he is a superb two-way player.

The Oil is better on defense than last year with the addition of Pitkanen and Souray, but they lack offense up front. Penner could score 30, or he could score 10. Stoll is a fine two-way player, if he can stay healthy. Hemsky could score 90 points, but only 15 may be goals.

There are just too many question marks on offense for me to think this team will make the playoffs, especially playing in the STACKED Northwest Division.

Still, I'm STOKED that hockey is back. All seems right with the world.

Take care,
PK

I watched some of the EDM intra squad game and I was really impressed with this kid. S Gagner. Playing with A. Helmski they were on a tear, of course now we have to watch them on an NHL game if they continue to click.

Initial reports in the blogosphere were fantastic about Gagner's performance last Saturday in the Joey Moss Cup intrasquad game. Said the kid has great hands and excellent awareness in the offensive zone.

The verdict on Schremp was very mixed. Same old, same old: A step behind, very irresponsible in his end. Schremp is sliding on the Oil's depth chart from the No. 1, can't-miss prospect status to career AHLer very quickly. All his fault, too, as he wastes superb talent with a lazy, me-first attitude.

The only good thing about the Kings is the change of jersys to RBK :D

They need a goalie. Zeppo?

Winter Classic in Buffalo on Jan. 1 between Sabres and Pens sold out today in less than an hour. All 74,000-plus seats are gone:

Luckily, my brother's company has tickets for the game. So I plan on being there! :)

Most teams are playing their exbitions games now and Canucks already have four key guys with groin problems, and Salo out with a wrist injury. I think it has to do with the short three days of training camp where everyone gets pushed to the extreme before the exhibition games.

And I know other teams are having the same problem, would it be that difficult to stretch the camp to a full week, so that everyone can train properly?

There was an online survey on the globeandmail yesterday about which CDN team had the most improved ney jersey and Canucks finished 1st with 38% of the votes. Just give me back the classic one.

Well, the Hawks won their first preseason tilt and Toews scored the game winner. I'm really hoping Toews and Kane make the roster and the development can start right now. I've got high hopes for both but even more for Toews.

Since thankfully little was done to the Habs and Leafs' sweaters, I'd have to vote Calgary's as the most improved jersey of the Canadian teams, even though that's heresy for me to say.

Edmonton's new sweaters look like practice jerseys, and Ottawa's are too garish. Vancouver's new sweaters are a JOKE, with the high school-ish block letters on the front.

I am surprised that Calgary is in the top ten, especially with iron Mike as coach. Although he's been there, players eventually turn away from him when he pushes them too hard. We'll see, his team hasn't scored yet in any exibition games and we'll see how J. Iginla leads this team when the Flames get out of hand.

Also COL with their goalie woes remains to be seen.

Entertaining exhibition between 'Nucks and EDM last night at the garage. Mybe VAN has more rookies ready to jump into the NHL than what I thought, I was impressed by the speed of M. Raymond.

Guess those new Reebok jerseys are creating some water-logged problems:

Ah, that's progress.

Looks like a few 1st rounders from this past June are going to start the season in the NHL. Patrick Kane with Chicago..obviously a no brainer but it also looks like Sam Gagner is going to make the Oilers roster at least for the 1st 9 games for sure and the Blues 3rd 1st round pick David Perron appears to be a lock to start the season in St. Louis.

Gagner will need to perform like Staal did in his first nine games with Pittsburgh last season to stay with the Oil. Yes, he looked impressive in his first two preseason games, but he disappeared against Vancouver. Not sure how he did against Calgary -- can anyone fill me in?

MacT likes him, though. Says the kid looks like he knows what he's doing with and without the puck. Good bloodlines help, for sure! :)

Cogliano has been mighty impressive the last two games and looks to be the kid who will stick this season with the Oil. MacT can't stop saying good things about him.

Oddly enough, Grebeshkov played like sh*t in the first two preseason games but has improved the last two. Still, MacT is gushing about him. Odd. I guess Grebeshkov's chances of sticking are being helped by Matt Greene's very slow start to camp and preseason.

Take care,
